a good collection
Breaking Ice is a collection of short stories from well know authors some more so than others, but all the stories were worth the read

Great Stories! Excellent introduction of new writers.
Short stories are my favorite literary genre and these are excellent! The many, varied female voices - in particular - are eye-opening and engrossing; the subjects are pertinent and realistic. The lives, thoughts, moods, and experiences of people of color are portrayed with finesse and great literary skill. This book introduced me to many new writers who surely deserve to be read. I would highly recommend this book to the study of African-American Literature in universities world-wide.

ADDICTIVE
THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. IT HAD ME READING EVERY NITE. I LOVE THE STORY OF AISHA AND RASID. ALSO, THE STORY ABOUT A WOMAN CATCHING HER HUSBAND HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH A YOUNG AND MORE BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. I FEEL SOME OF THE STORIES SHOULD HAVE BEEN LONGER. HOWEVER, THERE ARE A LOT OF GOOD SHORT STORIES IN THE BOOK

This is a great guide for the average golfer.

A gripping story of a recreation of an epic flight.
An incredible book about an incredible flight. It is difficult to know which is the more interesting -- the historical part of the book about the original Smith brothers flight, or Peter McMillan's account of his modern day recreation of the same flight. As an aviation buff I loved the detail of how the airplane was built (using the original plans) and tested and then the day-by-day chronicle of the flight. The chapter about the crash in Indonesia (by uncanny coincidence in virtually the same place as the Smith brothers 75 years before) is a great read. Highly recommended.

Great selection if you love biographies. Enjoyable reading
Great summer reading, especially if you love biographies. Tells all about the MacMillans starting in Scotland and up to the present. Another family like the Rockefellers or Kennedys but started much earlier and still going strong. Today one of the wealthiest families in the world. Most people have never heard of them.

Fascinating Look into the World of the Shark
The tales of a shark researcher and his colleagues and friends serve as the vehicle for instructing the reader on the fascinating world of the Shark. This narrative trick works in this book much better than I had anticipated, since the vignettes presented quickly depart from the story of the researchers involved and delve into the secrets of the shark they uncovered instead. And the secrets are fascinating. Shark fossils, shark senses, shark sex, shark behavior, shark attack (of course), threats to sharks and surprising data on shark intelligence are all presented in a book that breezes by too quickly. Well worth the price of admission!

A must-read!
This book provides the reader with essential background information on the history of markets, how they work, and some of the controversies behind them. Crucial for a well-rounded understanding of our economic system.

Big picture of auction and marketplace
As an auction site employee, this book gives me a bigger picture of my daily work. It helps me understand the overall auction theory/marketplace better. The five key factors to make marketplace work (information, property right, trust, reduce externalities, competition), are also the key factors to make every auction site, B2B marketplace succeed.

I sincerely recommend this book to people who are interested or work in online auction/marketplace business.

A balanced look at markets
This timely book describes the market systems of today's world. He is an advocate of what he calls the "market design approach" of economic systems. He has five things that a market needs to be effective: social trust, property rights protections, negative externality prevention, free flow of information, and competition. He makes a strong case for a 'middle way' in economic development when it comes to government involvement. He argues that the controlled and command economies of the far left, and the laissez-faire libertarian approach of the far right are both equally garbage. He tells some interesting stories of the worldwide pharmaceutical industry and critiques it's free market effects on society and world health. His discussion of information and technology are somewhat simplistic in my opinion, and his conclusions that for economic development these two forces need to be free to innovate and profit seemed the same pedantic old story that is peddled by Gates and co. He makes a strong case for honesty in business and describes some very interesting approaches for regulating and policing business behavior. His discussion of patents and intellectual property rights seemed balanced in its look at how they can help and hinder business and society. He also describes (convincingly in my opinion) how individual and company behavior creates all kinds of negative externalities that cannot be left to the market to take care of. The last couple of chapters described the very different methods of economic transitions used by New Zealand, Russia, and China, and he has some interesting conclusions to offer. He also addresses a chapter to the anti-globalization movements, and to the Marxists and Libertarians, where he takes what they argue, and looks at statistical evidence, and pretty much negates their arguments without really addressing the sociological and political grievances and seems to take a more simplistic model that economic growth is the best way to improve the lot of everyone everywhere, which I found annoying. But overall, he makes a strong argument for markets and their abilities to supply the most efficient system of providing goods and services to a society, but also recognizes significant weaknesses inherent in it that must be balanced by government activity.

Coming to Class : Pedagogy and the Social Class of Teachers

Class Conflict in Academia
Like most collections of essays, the quality of this one is mixed, but if you can stomach the sometimes trite personal narratives ("I came from a trailer park and now I teach at a community college full of students from trailer parks!"), you'll ultimately enjoy the insights that some of the book's 21 contributors have to offer. However, the collection is aimed at a specialized audience, particularly college English teachers, so if you haven't spent a significant portion of your life wondering why, with all your education, you have ended up where you are, this book won't make much sense.

The most interesting essays address the problem of social class within academia itself. For example, Olivia Frey writes, "The regard (disregard) for composition and composition teachers has interesting parallels with the daily struggles of workers and laborers, and their status within society at large." Although the sentiment here is nothing incredibly new, the fact that it is stated in print is in itself significant and might disturb many composition instructors (and their administrators) who are in deep denial about where they are and what they do.

At times the collection turns on itself, however, with some contributors appearing to advocate relaxed standards and "dumbing down" theories based solely on the social class of students. As a whole, the book would be more effective if it focused entirely on the problem of social class within the teaching profession, but it's still a great read.

A book to open doors.
In this anthology college teachers from all walks of life tell us how who they are, where they're from, affects their pedagogy. It's a terrific, ecclectic collection that should be required reading for teaching assistants beginning their careers. May it liberate and enlighten them, and any others who can come to personal history, to class, with an open mind.

What no ADO??!!!
I have not read this book. I would not buy it as it does not(apparently) cover database access with ADO ...which I would have thought would now be the prefered method? Having said that, the other methods probably work just fine.

Warning: Requires Visual J++ 1.0 (not 1.1) !
I'm only at page 60 (I bought this book today). I use Visual J++ 1.1, but this book was designed using Visual J++ 1.0. Already the earliest examples won't compile, because they build on a certain COM object that changed in version 1.1.

To be able to compile the examples, you need to follow these steps: After using the Java Type Library Wizard on the dao2535.tlb (the authors used dao2532.tlb) and understanding the examples, you have to rewrite the samples by studying the summary.txt in the dao2535 directory.
