ABC of Architecture
Published in Library Binding by Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media (2000)
Authors: James F. O'Gorman and Dennis E. McGrath
Amazon base price: $21.20
Average review score:

Short and, mostly, sweet.
This is a very informative, short book. While he doesn't ignore periods entirely, O'Gormans approach is to concentrate on key architectural principles, primarily structural, and use buildings, or even simplified sketches, to illustrate them. The book would have been even better if the glossary at the end were expanded, and used some sketches: words are frequently far less useful than pictures in explaining a term. Also, I found O'Gormans introduction a bit forced and wordy. Conversely, the last few pages of the book, in which he hurriedly covers such topics as the importance of history and association in interpreting architectural work, were fascinating, but rushed.

The vocabulary of architecture
Just as the title implies, this book is about how to read architecture. Reading requires understanding the vocabulary and structure of the language concerned. O'Gorman begins with Vitruvius' notions of function, structure, and beauty, and relates them to a building's plan, section, and elevation drawings respectively. Those, he claims, are the ABC's of architecture. But he also, knowingly or not, emphasizes that the future architect or critic study another, less metaphorical, vocabulary. It is important to know the names of architectural components and activities, and O'Gorman includes a chapter in which he recommends several dictionaries and presents some words, their meanings, and their histories.

For an introductory book on architecture, ABC OF ARCHITECTURE is very concise and well structured. His text is accompanied by useful illustrations. While he seems a bit disdainful of "celebrity architects," that is fine for the beginning architect who needs a strong foundation. The main flaw is its emphasis on Western architecture, but that is a characteristic shared by many other books.

Excellent Introduction to Architecture
My college freshman daughter told me she was thinking about majoring in environmental design. Knowing nothing about environmental design, I decided I needed to know more. Architecture is a part of environmental design, and I feel fortunate to have found this book. It is a fast read at about 120 pages, and it is focused on the three principles of an ancient Roman architect named Vitruvius: Utilitas, Firmitas, and Venustas in Latin, or function, structure, and beauty. The book devotes a chapter to each of these principles, and has additional chapters on architecture as communication and the vocabulary of architecture. The book also stresses the importance of history on architecture. The book has numerous drawings that help illustrate the points in the text. After reading this book I feel like I have a high-level picture of what architects have to consider in their profession.

The Academic Crisis of the Community College (Literacy, Culture and Learning: Theory and Practice)
Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (1991)
Authors: Dennis McGrath and Martin B. Spear
Amazon base price: $64.50
Average review score:

good book, but needs more historical context.
Mcgrath and Spear do a decent job of summarizing what they feel are the problems of the community college. Although they argue their point in a concise manner and do an excellent jo at it, they sometimes seem to expect you to take them at their word. The problems they cite are very real. People who study community colleges will have little trouble seeing their points, it would still be refreshing to place the problems in community colleges in some sort of historical context. I would advise, however, that anyone who studies community colleges or works in one have this volume in their personal library.

OK
This is book is part of Zondervan's Counterpoints series. According to the editors of this work, the purpose is to bring Christian thinkers together to discuss the question of the salvation of non-Christians. The contributors are: (1) John Hick, advocating pluralism; (2) Clark Pinnock advocating inclusivism; (3) Alister McGrath advocating a somewhat exclusivistic position; and (4) R. Douglas Geivett & W. Gary Phillips advocating exclusivism.

As is often the case with this series, the book suffers from poor editing. All of the essays are worth reading, but they generally don't deal with the alleged topic of the book. For example, Prof. Hick tells us that he believes in universal salvation and that he has written a book arguing for this position, but he doesn't give his reasons in the essay. Prof. McGrath touches on the issue, but not in any great detail. Prof. Pinnock deals with the topic in a limited manner. It is only Profs. Geivett & Philips who actually go into the question in some detail. They provide an exegesis of Acts 4:12 and some other passages. However, none of the other contributors responds with any detailed exegesis. What is often seen as the key passage concerning the salvation of non-believers -- Romans 2 -- is only mentioned in passing. So, this book is really a discussion of religious pluralism, not salvation.

In spite of my criticism, I think this book is helpful to anyone who wants a background on the general issue of religious pluralism. If you are looking for a discussion of evangelical views of the salvation of non-believers, then this isn't the place to look.

Still Fun To Read
I like all the differing views. While I am a conservative, I like the other points of view. This series is usually good for exposing differing views.

Good on the Who?, ignores, What?, How? and Why?
I was somewhat disappointed in this particular book, since I was hoping it would deal with what salvation means (Saved from what?) and how people are saved. Instead, it focuses exclusively on who may be saved.

Without a good understanding of the meaning of salvation, it is hard to be confident about who it may or may not apply to. However, the WHO question seems to be of more concern than the WHAT, WHY and HOW questions to most people interested in questions of salvation.

a narrow view
This book contains little perspective on Wellstone himself, a figure whom it is easy to love or hate.

It's mainly useful for recording certain facts surrounding the 1990 election and for a largely positive spin -- in a superficial and biased view -- of Paul Wellstone.

Interesting & Multi-Faceted
This book is interesting and worthwhile in two ways: first, because it does press Paul Wellstone's [fabulous] politics, and second, because it is a well written documentary of a fascinating campaign. Anyone interested in progressive politics or innovative campaigning is advised to read.

An uplifting story of one man's campaign for US Senate.
This is an excellent book that portrays what a politician should be. Plain and simple, if you like real politics, READ THIS BOOK!
