Fantastic Book
This could of been the greastest book since Mr. Bump. Its a classic that is a must read for all. Currently I am 17 years old and have read this about 42 times. I must say its still invigorating, to the point that I will explode...

Good Taste For Reading
Stone Soup is very fun reading. This is a great story because it keeps you interested from start to finish. This story tells of a young man who is off on a long walk and gets hungry. He goes to a little old lady's house and asks to be fed. After she turns him down he offers to make stone soup for them both. So the two boil a stone but soon add onions, carrots, beef bones, barley and many other things to make it taste better. The two then go on to share a very nice afternoon together before the young man heads out for another long walk. I really enjoyed the parts where the little old lady gathers all of the fancy things needed to make the soup. That's why I think that most other people should enjoy this book too.

A classic tale! Always a pleasure!
Stone Soup is a classic story brought to life through the pictures by Winslow Pinney Pels. A young man, a pauper, spies a house that looks like plenty of food could be found there. The old woman who owns the house tells him to go away, she has no food in the house, no food in the garden. The young man asks her for a stone. "A stone, what do you want with a stone," she curiously asks the pauper. "Ah," says he, and he knows he HAS her. As the story unfolds, the young man has the woman adding more and more ingredients to the stone soup the young man is making. Completely duped, until possibly the very end, the old woman is the young man's accomplice in tricking herself into providing the pauper with a "feast for a king." And what will become of the stone, read the story, and find out! You'll enjoy it!

Excellent!
Of all the history on daily life, no book offers more practical insight into the daily lives of Colonists.

The Bible says, "Out of the mouths of babes..." Perhaps the same is true "For the eyes/ears of babes..."

Truly excellent. In all my searching through so many standard old history books, I could not find answers to the questions this book resolved.

Best of all, our kids love it!

Fascinating
A really fun, well orgainized book. My 6 and 9 year olds loved it and so did I (Mom). We have been back to it many times, looking at particular sections. I am now ordering other titles in the series.

Colonial history came alive for my kids!
I highly recommend this book. My children, 6 and 4 years old, could easily put themselves into the very clearly described settings. They got a real feel for what life was like in colonial days. It was fun to read - made for GREAT family time!

This book is hard to put down!
I got "If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620" for our Thanksgiving unit based on several glowing recommendations. I was not disappointed. Both my 5 yo and I had a hard stopping once we got started. I learned things about the Pilgrims I'd never known. And, the content is fascinating for children. It covered such curious topics as Did they bathe on the Mayflower?, What did they eat?, How were people who broke the law punished?, What did children do? It was written to entertain anyone over the age of 4. It's a question/answer book and exceptionally well done.

Great Book
I purchased this book for my Grandchildren but this is not only a great book for 4-8 year olds but for anyone over 4. You might learn some things you didn't know. By the way, if you ever go to Plymouth you can go on the Mayflower II, and be sure to visit Plimoth Plantation (it's like going back in time to 1630).

Just Like You Were There!!!
This book by Ann McGovern depicts the life that you would have had on the Mayflower. You get a sense and almost feel like you are there with the rest of the pilgrims in 1620. The detail is just great and is a book that all kids should read from a historical standpoint.

Lady in the Box Teaches Caring to Young Readers
This is definitely a lap and snuggle book. It's not heavy, but BIG with warm tones and autumn colors settled on the pages. The illustrator, Marni Backer, captured snowy winter scenes that immediately draw you into any large city and any large neighborhood. Could this neighborhood by yours? With each turn of the page, the traffic muffles and city bustle blurs so that you can now be introduced to Lizzie and Ben's dilemma of seeing a homeless woman, Dorrie, and the children wanting to help despite their mother's caution about talking to strangers.

Told with the realism of a child, you'll see how Lizzie and Ben leave Dorrie peanut butter and crackers--but forget to give her a dinner knife. (They did much better when they brought her some warm vegetable noodle soup.)

When their mother takes notice of the parade of missing food items, she begins to become involved. She helps us to find out why Dorrie is homeless and the whole family spends a Saturday volunteering at a soup kitchen.I won't spoil the ending, but rest assured that there is a message of hope for Dorrie.

One of the nicest features about the book is the note from the author on the last page. Written at a level that young children can understand, she explains her idea for the book, where she has volunteered in an effort to help the homeless, and where to start if you want to find out more about homelessness.

A Thanksgiving Classic With New Illustrations
The previous edition of this book, published in 1973, has been a favorite introduction to the Pilgrims for primary students in our school for many years. Written at about a third grade reading level, it works as a readable chapter book, as well as a quick read-aloud. The black, white and turquoise drawings in the older version were adequate, but the text always deserved more detailed and interesting illustrations. While I have not see this new edition, it appears that this situation has now been remedied.

My students have always taken an interest in the kid's perspective of life aboard the Mayflower and during the first year at Plymouth. They love to know that the Pilgrims took two dogs and a cat with them. They wonder about the "same old salted beef and fish" that had to be eaten. They plug their noses when they think about the Pilgrims wearing "the same clothes every day," even sleeping in them.

They marvel at the straw roofs of the new homes being set on fire by sparks that flew up the chimney. They are stunned to learn that good manners meant children had to stand during meals, and that they could only speak when spoken to by an adult. Then my students smack their lips at the many foods that were eaten at the first Thanksgiving: wild turkeys, geese, ducks, deer, lobsters, clams, oysters and fish, not to mention the many vegetables, and of course, popcorn.

I look forward to adding the new edition of this classic to our library collection.

Wonderful book for discussing loud and soft sounds
As an elementary music teacher, I have found that Too Much Noise is an excellent story to read in music class when discussing dynamics (louds and softs) to first graders. After learning sound effects, i.e. "creaking","squeaking", "swish", "hiss" and animal noises, my students get swept up in the gradual crescendo of the story. The sudden quiet effect that occurs in the room when all the animals leave the old man's house is breath-taking and mesmerizing to the children. One can literally hear a pin drop. Such is the power of great story-telling!

The absolute best!!
This was one of my favorite stories as a kid, and still is as an adult. The text is easy to read with good repetition, without being dull. My daughter loves it as much as I do. As an amature storyteller, I can say this story is always a hit.

Fun for the reader and audience. Wonderful tale.
This is one of my favorite children's books. It is a lot of fun to read and has repetative sounds that children love to hear. The audience of children can begin to anticipate what you are going to read and therefore participate in the reading of the book. It is also a classic tale as it reminds the reader and audience of how one needs to appreciate what one has, because it could be worse. A farmer complains to a judge that his house is too noisy. The judge instructs the farmer to obtain different animals one at a time until the poor farmer has a house full of a variety of animals. The judge then has some further instructions that in the end the farmer is very happy and content with how his home was in the beginning, and his home does not seem so noisy anymore. I would highly recommend this book for parents and teachers to read to children between the ages of 3-7yrs.

Girl Power
A wonderfully practical and smart girl is the heroine in this story. She doesn't sit around and wait for someone to rescue her. She uses her brain, rather than brute strength to find the prince and face the trolls. I bought this book as a young girl from a school book club, and now I have two daughters who love it as much as I ever did.

Lots of action!
Hi, I'm Marah. I really loved this book. I like the part were she went in the war and was fighting. I felt like I was in it. BUY THIS BOOK!

The Secret Soldier
The Secret Soldier is a marvellous biography about a valiant woman named Deborah Sampson. She was undoubtedly one of the most courageous and adventurous woman in America. This book is a fabulous story of a youthful woman who was born impoverished, and was ent from house to house until she came of ge to be on her own. Determined to discover adventure, she disguises herself as a soldier and fights in the Revolutionary War. She wanted adventure and she certainly got it.
I highly recommend this book to any variety of children. It is a quick read but at the same time it's very intriguing. I relished this book because it is a true story about a real girl who really lived. It captures your attention and doesn't let it go until the very end!
