Trust These Tales
"The Best of Pif Magazine Off-Line" offers a refreshing assortment of new stories and new voices. A standout among them is Mimi Carmen's "Love Birds". Ms. Carmen's tale of an aging mother and conflicted daughter resonates with idiosyncratic vision and gritty passion. The bird imagery is breathtaking. I also very much enjoyed "23 Johnson Avenue, 1985" by Diann Blakely. If writers were race horses, and I had money, I'd bet my wad on these two.

Don't miss it!
A wonderful collection - refreshingly different, but solid. My favorite is "Love Birds" by Mimi Carmen. I'd like to read more of her work.

a big punch
I am bored with many print magazines nowadays. The same things, the same things. Ho-hum. I've been following this zine for a while now, open it every month with relish. They've definitely picked a lot of their best, and Camille Renshaw's intro says a lot about WHY I don't like other magazines. Here is something worth a read, something that will make you want to get everything the magazine has put out since the beginning. There's even a rationale for professional wrestling, something that wants me to buy a tape of the event with the Undertaker/Mankind Hell in the Cell match, and I NEVER watch that stuff! You should definitely have this on your shelf--impress your friends with how in the know you are.

A Delightfully Simple Explanation of God's Values
I found this book to be a terrific conversation starter with my five year old son. The story is simple... A king, whom everyone loves, goes on sabaticle and leaves his son in charge. The people, no longer able to see the king, start to doubt if there really ever was a king. Then they start to question what is "good" and what is "bad." Much silliness follows, but a clear parallel to sin is drawn. When the son tells the people they are behaving badly, they become a mob and attack him. Dad (the king) comes home just in time to save his son, and the people realized that they had been wrong.

A sweet story for kids, Topsy Turvy Kingdom is a great introduction to religious allegory and also works well if you're looking for a resource that will help teach your kids that everyone comes under authority.

I hope your family enjoys its thought provoking discussions as much as ours did! God speed!

A wonderful contribution to the field of addictions.
McDowell and Spitz give an incredibly thorough, yet succinct overview of the field of substance abuse. The book is informative, well written, and an interesting read. It will be of great interest to all clinicians who work with substance abuse patients. I personally recommend it to anyone who encounters the problem of addiction, whether it be in a personal or professional realm.

Excellent introduction to substance abuse
I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the field of substance abuse. It is informative without getting bogged down in too much detail, and makes for interesting reading. The volume is also peppered with fascinating historical tidbits.

Exceptional
Doctors Mc Dowell and Spitz aught to be applauded for their innovative presentation. It should be a permanent fixture in the offices of every therapist as a research guide, and on the bookshelves of patients. It is a wellspring of information for both the layman and the pro. Thank you both.

Palestine and Israel: The Uprising and Beyond

palestinean uprising
McDowall really makes a good effort in the book by investigating as much as he can in the context. He seems to be more sympathetic to the palestinian view than the Zionist one. He clearly tends to view the Palestinian uprising as a succesful event in the history of Palestinian efforts against Israeli state. He considers the uprising as a revolt of an occupied, colonized third-world people and it is the latest stage of Arab struggle against Zionism and Israel. The major strength of his arguement in this book is his analysis of the present(for the time it was written) and projections for the future. he critically reassesses the prospects for a settlement for the Arab-Israeli conflict. His analysis of taking the conflict as a intra-community instead of intra-state is a good effort. Also the international and super-power aspects are taken by him from a realist perspective. It is not a book which can be rated as perfect but it is good enough for the days it was written. Today in the year 2000 we can say that his predictions are far from reality.

Not what I thought but good basic book
I read a review of the book in a industry magazine and it described it as useful for a professional financial advisor, as the title also implies. It turned out to be a pretty basic educational book with general but basic financial information. A good book for a beginner or someone who is just beginning to break into the financial services industry, but not necessarily for a seasoned professional.
