CAPE MAY AT ITS BEST
THIS BOOK IS GREAT FOR ANYONE WHO ONLY THINKS OF CAPE MAY AS A SUMMER TOWN. THE MANY BEAUTIFUL PICTURES WILL SHOW JUST HOW WONDERFUL THIS BEAUTIFUL TOWN IS ALL THE TIME. MY ONLY WORRY IS THAT EVEN MORE PEOPLE WILL BE HERE AFTER SEEING THE TOWN IN ALL SEASONS.

What an excellent book!
I was so pleased after I read the book. I am a big fan of Cape May and I try and go often during the summer. After reading the book, I'll be visiting every season!

The book really captures the beauty of Cape May
Cape May is a beautiful town in New Jersey that my family and I visit every summer. Every time I leave, I wish I could take a piece of Cape May home with me. Now that I have Mary McCarthy's book, I can visit as often as I like. The book really does capture the essence of Cape May. I highly reccommend buying the book.

Rituals for Women Coping with Breast Cancer

A Healing Journey Companion
This wonderful little book suggests experiences/rituals that validate, guide and support women diagnosed with breast cancer as they travel the often overwhelming terrain from diagnosis to healing journey. Using the myth of Pandora's Box as metaphor, the awareness, sensitivity and power of the writing and simple heart-felt rituals is inspiring. Highly recommended for support groups--both formally sponsored as well as informal gatherings of friends-- and by individuals in a meditative way.

A gift to the women of the world
RIRUALS FOR WOMEN COPING WITH BREAST CANCER is a gift for everyone! We all know of someone who is coping with this desease, perhaps it's ourself. So we are all asking how are we to be and what are we to do with this life changing experience. For women this is a personal, spiritual, physical and psychological journey. This book of rituals gives form and possibility to live as healthily as we can with breast cancer.

As a minister of spirituality I companion many women who are trying to live with breast cancer, therefore I am also coping with the experience. When I read this book of rituals I imediately ordered several. The authors gently, cretively and wisely make suggestions for rituals that can be reflected upon or acted out by the individual or with another or a group. Often the woman coping with breast cancer is not ready to do so with a group. But she does need to ritualize her feelings. So right in the introduction the authors give this permission to the reader.

If there is a poverty of spirit among women today it is the lack of trusting their own power to ritualize life experiences. We have been, and many still are, co-opted to transfer the power of the ritual to a designated minister...usually a male in the patriarchial religions. But in order to live whole lives women must reclaim their power and creat ritual about all life experiences.

This reclaiming or our power is especially difficult when the experience is a devastating loss. RITUALS FOR WOMEN COPING WITH BREAST CANCER invites the women or her circle of friends to reclaim this power. One ritual done well, and this book is a brilliant aid in facilitating this, convinces the person or community of the power of ritual.

I highly recommend this book for all women, all ministers and for all communities of care.

Touching My Soul
In 1997 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and I was frightenedto death! I didn't know where to turn. Sharing with my childrenbrought tears for them and an inability to talk about it. We were all dealing with the possibility of death and I felt like I had no where to go with my fear.

The doctor told me I was lucky because I had ductul carcinoma in situ, which means the cancer was encapsulated. It was also microscopic. Early detection is always the key to the most hopeful situation. After two lumpectomies and 38 radiation treatments I was told that hopefully I would fall into a 96% category for survival. No matter how hopeful the prognosis, one lives with the FEAR every single day of one's life.

My process began in early June and the treatments were completed in early November. The months between were very difficult. IF ONLY THIS BOOK HAD BEEN AVAILABLE THEN to companion me through the emotions, the sounds and the loneliness conjured by this evil!

Acknowledging one's reality, claiming confidence, naming losses, stream of emotions, taming and living with the fear and celebrating hope -- these are all of things that I was yearning to do in my own personal horror. I did not have the language nor the structure to allow myself these simple yet profound opportunities.

Kudos to the Prism Collective for touching my soul and so many others. Rituals for Women Coping with Breast Cancer is the most wonderful, caring, insightful way to touch the lives of the thousands of women who confront the evil beast every day. This offers courage, hope and a great sense of not being alone in the struggle! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Good sense just when we need it
How did we get where we are just now? And, more importantly, what can we do about it? This book offers some keen insights into how the dot.com speculative bubble was created, and the mistakes in judgement that many of us made in the process. But rather than crying over "spilt" milk, it offers us sound ideas for picking up the pieces and building on from there. I like its brevity and flow, and the quotes from CEOs and luminaries, such as Baruch Lev,are appropriate rather than gratuitous. Good work.

An Excellent Read That's Right on the Money
Agile Business offers a strong framework for understanding our complex business environment and for devising meaningful strategies that take advantage of our fluctuating economy.

Between Friends: The Correspondence of Hannah Arendt & Mary McCarthy
Published in Paperback by Secker & Warburg (1996)
Author: Hannah Arendt
Amazon base price: $32.95
Average review score:

Literary Romance
"Friends" is the operative word in the title of this beautiful volume of letters spanning over the course of thirty years. We get two women, two friends, who happen as well to be two of the best writers of the second half of the 20th century. They are inimate and candid, and let us into the lives of these two writers in a way that biographies do not. They were keenly perecptive about each other's works and loves. MCCarthy has numerous illicent affairs, and four marriages, and we see her grappling with her own desires in her letters to Arendt, who it seems sometimes played intermediary. Arendt is less inclined to let McCarthy, and thus us, into her emotional life, but when she does, it is explosive. Carol Brightman, McCarthy's biographer, has written an illuminating and insightful introduction that gives a brief overview of both women's careers and delves into the physcology of their relationship with each other, a relationship that lasted the test of time, and long periods of seperation. Arendt, based in New York, moved around the states at various distinguished teaching posts, while McCarthy, based in Paris, traveled to Italy, and later Vietnam. The fact that the two intimate corresspondants did not come together more often is the one truly surprising element of their relationship. But it also shows us that some of the best friendships are those carried out through letters.

Excellent book, with "different" excercises that stimulates the mind into thinking in a different manner. Digs deeply into the manner into which we think, and analyzes every aspect. This book is a standard resource at all Bryant & Stratton college campuses....

work of a genius
This may sound absurd - but "Locos-...." is truly the work of a genius. Some books surpass the boundaries of time and this is one such book. To summarize the book in one sentence will be like this "non-characters are characters, fiction is reality and solutions are problems".
Felipe Alfau was a strange character and so are his books - very very different, they remind us of the writings of Vargas Llosa with a taste of Cortazar. This is not a translation rather Alfau has written the book in English so all the spices of the Spanish culture are visible. This is extremely rare even with the best of the translators. You get a taste of Spain and a vivid picture of the vibrant society which was so different from the rest of Europe. The people are full of life and passion. Love and passion are the means for making life flow and may be we all need to follow that some day.
You can look at this book either as a short story book or a novel - since it has nine short stories which can either be individually read but they are also connected to each other.
I am long time fan of Marquez and I can promise that this book is equally impressive as any book from Marquez. It is a must buy.

A Comedy Tragically Ignored
I share the puzzlement of the reviewer below over why this isn't considered one of the 20th Century's great works of fiction. I'd go further and say this is probably the most underrated novel of the last 100 years. The most important literature not only blazes a trail, but does so in a way that compares favorably to the books it inspires. This is true for Locos. The book should have had a stronger edit, but what Alfau achieves here - stories that rewrite each other, characters who morph into each other - unleashed new powers from the fictional narrative that have yet to be fully tapped. There's a moment at the end of a story called "A Character" that is one of the very few mindblowing experiences I've had reading fiction. Alfau was probably the first novelist since Laurence Sterne to understand this potential in narration. There's a character in Locos named Fulano who, desperate to get others to notice him, breaks a storefront window. The owner comes out, ignores Fulano and wonders how such a thing could have happened. In a sad way, Locos is like Fulano. Everyone marvels at the glass it shattered, but nobody can see Locos.

He echoes Gogol whilst anticipating Borges & co.
I can't understand why this is not regarded as one of the greatest works of modern fiction. It anticipates many of the great writers of the latter half of the century, while being every bit as good as those who came later. The first two chapters are a bit hard and left this reader thinking Very clever, but.....

However the next three stories are excellent and I was quickly drawn into the surreal world of Alfau. Each chapter works well as a short story, but the further the reader digs, the more the stories link into a single novel rich in characters and ideas. Borges, Calvino, Kundera and the Boom-time Latin Americans were great writers, but after reading Alfau I realise they were not as original as I'd long thought. A book waiting to be rediscovered (again!).

Security Transformation: Digital Defense Strategies to Protect your Company's Reputation and Market Share
Published in Digital by McGraw-Hill ()
Authors: Mary Pat McCarthy, Stuart Campbell, and Rob Brownstein
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

A good managerial overview
Security Transformation is an excellent book for a manager, "C" officer or other less technical readers. The authors take care to present the issues of digital security in an easy to read, non-jargon laden manner. And for the jargon that is put in the book, there is a glossary at the end to help keep everyone on the same page. This is the book you hand on to executives who just don't understand why security is important. It looks at the effect technology security has upon the ability to secure business and the ability to not be part of a larger problem, such as a Distributed Denial of Service attack. The warnings are real, but are not played for sensationalism, cooly explaining what threats are out there and what they mean to "you." I don't think I learned much I hadn't known already, but I did find a nice coherent package to introduce others to the risks, with significantly less amounts of techno-jargon or offputting technical details. A quick read and a good overview.

Highly Recommended!
Mary Pat McCarthy and Stuart Campbell provide just enough technical information to help you understand the electronic security risks your company faces without falling into a complete course in computer programming and Internet data transmission. The authors' most valuable contribution is their structured plan for evaluating your computer system's security and creating security architecture. We [...] direct those who want a more advanced treatment of computer security issues to the book's two appendices, which review some of the same ground in more detail. This book is an important read for CEOs and an essential resource for anyone responsible for corporate security or risk management.

Snappy, thoughtful and useful
When I read the first chapter, I thought I had picked up a Clancy novel by mistake. The first section says "Are you scared yet?" You better believe it. The good news, though, is you can do something about it, and this book helps you make informed decisions about what to do. Definitely worth the price and more.
