Fun for reader & readee...
My nearly 2 year old daughter has us read this to her over and over. Last week at a restaurant she spontaneously started reciting "Peanut Peg & Peanut Pete". It's fun to read cover to cover or just a few. And I can see her reading it for many years to come.

Definitely a good addition to your child's library.

Happy Mom
My son is about to turn 4 and LOVES this book. We make up songs to many on the poems, act out the different siutations and went in search of red suspenders for him. The poems are simple but visual and evocative of seasons, moods and fun. I highly recommend it!!!

More enchanting chldren's rhymes from Jack Prelutsky
The frog wore red suspenders
and the pigs worse purple vests,
as they sang to all the chickens
and the ducks upon their nests.

They croaked and oinked a serenade,
the ducks and chickens sighed,
then laid enormous spangled eggs,
and quacked and clucked with pride.

Earlier generations had Edward Lear, Dr. Seuss and Tom Lehrer to introduce them to the wonders of what some might disparage as mere "nonsense" verse. To the list of those for whom words are mere play things, we can add Jack Prelutsky, who presents these poems about people and animals set off in such exotic locals from Monterey to Winnemuca. These poems, intended for children age 5 and up, will introduce young readers to Peanut Peg and Peanut Pete of Atlanta, Spotter and Swatter two talented otters, and an elephant perched on a sycamore tree in Indianapolis. Plus, wait until you see what happens in Tuscaloose, after dark.

"The Frog Wore Red Suspenders" includes over two dozen poems, illustrated by Petra Mathers in a sort of American primitive style that young child will find comforting (my favorite is her painting for "In Minot, North Dakota," where the snowmouse blows away). But the chief charm of this book are the funny verses, especially if the kids happen to find one about the city in which they live.

Fabulous for All Ages (even under the recommended '4+' age)
My 16-month old daughter LOVES this book and the cute illustrations - grandma has been "forced" to read it over and over and it has kept her attention. We're looking forward to getting the other books in the series.

charming
This is the first in a series of 3 books with Lottie the Hen and Herbie the Duck. Wonderful illustrations, sweet stories. Highly recommended.

Absolutely wonderful
The illustrations are just wonderful in this book and so is the story. If you love the beach, you will definitely enjoy this. Lottie uses her beach towel in a variety of ways, to walk on when the beach is hot, as a sail when Herbie's boat stops running, as a bridal veil. And it is great that Lottie writes a thank-you note to her Aunt Mattie for the towel. The text is simple to read, but it is slightly more "grown-up" in nature compared to other childrens books we have. Nonetheless, since we are avid readers, my three year old loves it and we also have "Lottie's New Friend".

Awesome!
I found a copy of this book at my local library and my son fell in love with it after reading it only once. There is a pronunciation guide in the front, so the parent can be assured they are pronouncing everything correctly. My son has been talking about "Borreguita" non-stop and this is a book that I'm for sure going to add to his collection.

Fun to Read!
What fun I had reading this book out loud to my daycare kids and watching them giggle and howl each time the borreguita tricked the coyote.

This book is a classic to read aloud and share with all kids.

A Favorite in our Family!
This is a delightful Mexican Tale that my children and I continue to enjoy. The glossary in the front of the book adds to the delight of the story by helping the parent read with a wonderful Spanish accent. We have read this book more than any other book we have at home. I highly recommend it.

We Love Lottie!
My two-year old is fascinated by Lottie and Herbie and I get a kick out of reading the Lottie series everytime. This one just might be our favorite though, because it's about food and poetry! Quirky and something different from so many other cutesy books, this one has humor, substance, and delightful illustrations.

Lottie and Herbie Never Disappoint
A Cake for Herbie is a sensitive, charming story your pre-schoolers will adore. Herbie the duck reads about a poetry contest and with the encouragement of his best friend Lottie the chicken, he enters. He stays up all night working hard on his poetry, only to be laughed off the stage. Sad and disappointed, he walks into a restaurant where his poetry is appreciated and he wins his own special prize. Petra Mathers charming and amusing text is only outdone by her wonderful, expressive illustrations. This is a touching story your children will want you to read over and over again. You don't want to miss this very special book.

delightful
Wonderful illustrations and a sweet, gentle story. We've read it every night for the past few weeks (at the request of my 2 and 4 year-olds) and NONE of us is tired of it yet. Great addition (3rd) to the "Lottie" series.

buy it
I recently discovered this series (3 books by Petra Mathers -- this is the 2nd) and I'm already anxiously looking forward to book 4. Great illustrations, sweet story. My 2 and 4 year-olds adore the characters.

Funny, warm, loving look at friendship!
I love this world, of Lottie, Herbie, and now Dodo that Petra Mathers has created. You'll laugh but most of all you'll recognize yourself--because who hasn't ever felt like a fifth wheel at one time or another? The art is fresh, and filled with wonderful details of this seaside town--which is so cozy that it makes me want to buy a house there right next to Lottie! And look out for perhaps the funniest line you've EVER seen on a flap!( I won't ruin it by telling you). I am crazy about this book AND the series and I know kids and the adults that read it to kids will be too!!

Lots of fun
Lottie and Herbie return, with Mathers' trademark gorgeous paintings that are quirky, quaint, and very funny. These Lottie books tend to be winners.

Mrs. Merriwether's Musical Cat
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (1999)
Authors: Carol Purdy and Petra Mathers
Amazon base price: $13.50
Average review score:

Great book for piano students, parents and teachers!
My own piano students have enjoyed reading about Mrs. Merriweather's musical cat. I love how the author portrays the piano teacher in this book. Mrs. Merriwether lives an ordinary life, except on Tuesdays, when she teaches her three piano students.

Each student brings his/her own special personality and challenge to the lesson. The pictures are hilarious. When a cat comes into Mrs. Merriweather's studio, somehow the students are playing better, and the crabby neighbor is happier too!

The surprise ending will delight cat-lovers as well as music-lovers.

If you are a piano teacher, or your child takes piano lessons, this book is a must-read!

Happy reading!

Absolutely Charming!
This beautiful book is funny and heart-warming! A delight for children, adults and anyone who has ever taken piano lessons or known a piano teacher (or a cat!). I love it!

A great story for piano teachers and students!
This story makes me laugh out loud every time I read it! As a cat lover and a piano teacher, it speaks to two of my greatest interests. Of course, it is a children's picture book, but it's nice to find one that is fun for adults as well! I also like the way it encourages piano students and keep it in the studio for children who are waiting for their lessons. It is getting very well-worn!

Love and Marriage Among the Feathered.....
What do you get when you combine Lottie's funny, good-hearted friend Dodo and an old, cranky and lonely helicopter rescue pilot, Captain Vince? Another picture book winner from Petra Mathers. Poor Captain Vince was injured in a rescue mission and lost a leg. He now sits home alone, day in and day out, feeling sorry for himself. That is until the wonderful exuberant Dodo pushes her way into his life and within no time, the two are inseparable. He proposes marriage in a most unique way. She says YES in a style all her own and the wedding is on. And even a wedding eve disaster can't dampen the love of this match made in heaven..... Petra Mathers' sweet, and engaging story will put a big smile on the faces of children and adults, alike. The simple, gentle and amusing text is complemented by her wonderfully expressive, bold and bright illustrations full of charming, familiar, special details. This is the fourth book of Ms Mathers' Lottie and Herbie series and fans will be thrilled to see a whole book about a favorite character, exotic Dodo. For those new to these delightful stories, make sure you read them all...Lottie's New Beach Towel, Lottie's New Friend and A Cake for Herbie.

Perfect Whimsey
Petra Mathers' books always have charm and wit. Dodo Gets Married has imagination and gives the reader the chance to add to the tale with the superb illustrations that complement the story. It also introduces an element of complexity into the story of a lonesome man, with a sadness in his past, made joyful by the love and affection of charming Dodo. After four books in a series one has a life to follow in the various characters that adds dimension. I look forward to the next in the series with great anticipation.

A thoroughly entertaining story for young readers.
Campbell Geeslin's How Nanita Learned To Make Flan will reach ages 3-8 with a survey of a poor shoemaker's daughter's decision to make her own shoes for her first Communion. Kids with good reading skills will appreciate this tale of her efforts.

Enchanting story for any kid, the magical Geeslin touch
Sweeps you away with magical words and pictures. Campbell Geeslin's childlike approach to any subject charms the kid and the adult. I found myself going back and reading it again and again.

I have been collecting all his books.

Have you heard these words????
If you have, then this book is for you! If your child is in the terrible twos-or threes, then you will both like this book! It is amusing for the toddler to be in the grown-up role. There is a message for parent and child alike.

mommy go away
allows the child to act out the fantasy of being in charge of the world-and as such to gain a sense of competence about the self.
