In this instance I can speak with some fair amount of inside knowledge as I was one of the primary Immigration Department witnesses before the Inquiry and, consequently, I am mentioned in several areas in this book.
From my perspective the authors have gone out of their way to pound a square peg into a round hole by perpetuating inaccuracies in Mr. Matas' wild theories which, I thought, had been clarified by Justice Deschenes' Commission. For example, on page 31, the authors state, in reference to the war criminal Helmut Rauca, that his passage [to Canada] "was aided by the Canadian Christian Council for the Relief of Refugees."
I can recall vividly the day Mr. Matas came up to me in the foyer of the Supreme Court to show me a blow-up of the ship's manifest which chronicled Rauca's entry to Canada [this was before the advent of individual landing records]. The names were listed down the left side while across the top were columns for details such as date of birth, religion, sponsorship details, etc.
Referring to the latter, when I pointed out to Mr. Matas the initials "CCC" he immediately assumed it meant "Canadian Christian Council." And although I corrected that assumption by stating that, no, it referred to the "Canadian Council Of Churches", he maintains his original erroneous assumption in the book.
The Canadian Council Of Churches was a multi-denominational organization consisting of - among others - the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, and Jewish churches/synagogues.
Let's keep the record straight.
