A Very Good Story For Teenagers And Up...
A touching, sad, suspenseful and truth-filled story of a teenager named Rose, and her mother who helps to heal people. And an angry group of people against them. And a terrible, powerfull man who comes to their town.
This is story involves risk, love, betrayal, you name it... This book has it all. I highly reccomend it.
However, only for teenagers and very mature children. It is based on the horrid witch hunts and does include some disturbing things.
If you have a chance to read it, do! I could hardly put it down. The suspence will catch you and hold you. A great tale.
It also brings truth to what really happened in the witch hunts so long ago... A must-read.
Enjoy!

Horrifying, eye opening account of the witch hunts
Carol Matas, best known for the "Of Two Minds" novels and her various Holocaust fictions, has created a shocking novella about two women who find themselves trapped in a witch hunt in Renaissance France.

Suzanne Rives, a beautiful and fiercely independent widow and skilled midwife, refuses advances from two men to live with her daughter, the main character Rose. People have already been suspicious of her herbal treatments, but when a witch hunter spreads terror in the town comes, Suzanne's fate is sealed.

However, Rose still has some allies: Sylvie, a plucky castle maid whose motives are revealed later, and Raymond, a young man. Suzanne is subjected to horrifying torture by the cruel witch hunters and fanatics.

The violence is bloody and shocking, but never goes over the top. This book is well written, taut and poignant, about a mother-daughter relationship that must overcome the cruelties of the day.

GGGGGGGGGGGGGG-reat!
Great boooooook! It was so sad! It made me cry! WHA WHA !

The coolest book !
I read this book for a school book report, and it turned out to be so interesting that I coulnd't put it down. The characters of Zev and Aaron are easy to identify with and amazingly realistic. The events are very exciting and it keeps you in suspense. It also teaches you about some of the horrible things that Jews have had to go through. You should definitely read this book!

Great book, historically accurate!
I am a Jewish person, and reading this book has even taught ME more about my faith's tragic history, and it's triumphs as well. I was forced to read this book as part of a report due tommorrow (3/20/1998) and once I started, I was hooked. I had the honor of meeting the author, but had never realized the greatness of her works. I know that I will soon seek out more of her works, and I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, or Jewish history.

Jesper's side of the war
I thought this book was okay but I didn't go crazy for it. It should have been based on a real person so you would actually know what the people felt like, for real. The book didn't seem real enough.

What a Suspenseful Book!!!
This book, "Jesper", a sequel to "Lisa", is a quite suspenseful story for a topic on war. Stories that have themes on war always seem boring to me, but these two books have changed my likes for books. This is an overview of what the book is mainly about:
Jesper and his fellow resistance fighters help bring their home country to freedom from their opposing country, Germany. Denmark's Allies, France, Britain, and Sweden had supported them to spread the current news about the new plans for bombing more German headquarters.
I recommend these two books, "Jesper" and "Lisa", to those who like to read about war and adventure.

Amazing Book! I recommend!
This is an amazing book! It really makes you think and gives a great perspective of being a teenager growing up around the Second World War and the Holocaust. Teenagers can really relate to the characters in this book, I know being a teenager. I love this book, and I think you will too! Carol Matas does a great job researching all of her books so I think you should look into her others as well as buying this one!

Everybody in the worls should read this book
I am Jewish, and when I read this book, I found out the realistic happening of what could have been me in the Holocaust if my ancestors had not moved to America before this all started. Books like "The Devils Arithmatic" are very well written books but do not give the 411 on what really happned. For example, "The Devil's Arithmatic" skiped parts about Jews ging into a ghetto and they made the Jews not know who the Nazis were in 1942. By that date, everyone that was Jewish knew what was going on and would have probably been sent to a ghetto long before. This book, however, gives the true happening of the Holocaust, and shows what people lost that were so dear to them. I was almost in tears when I finished this book. My teacher at my middle school had a historical book report project she assigned. She reccomended "Daniel's Story" as her favorite book. My friend who sits next to me, is Hindu and read the book when she knew nothing about the Holocaust. She loved it and couldn't put it down. In conclusion, this book is one of my favorites and it was a great learning experience- even though I knew much about the Holocaust already. Please read it!

Very Well Written and Compelling Short Novel!
WOW! This story is surely one of my favourites! Before reading Daniel's Story, I had no background information at all about what the Holocaust and World War II was like. It was a shocking and very compelling novel, to say the least. I first read this story about 2 years ago, and I've read it 5 times since. It keeps drawing me back, with its strong plot and setting development. The characters really got through to me as well! GREAT JOB, Carol Matas! I would HIGHLY recommend this book to ANYONE who wants to learn about the Holocaust and what the Jews had to go through back then.

Daniel's Story,My review
In class we were reading this book, and it was so touching that I will never forget it.I loved this book, and not only did it teach me more about the Holocaust, but it encouraged me to learn more about the Holocaust. Daniel starts off a 14 year old boy an a train, but then goes through hard times, loosing his family and ending up at a concentration camp. I encourage all the other young readers to read this book or buy it.It will be worth the time and money!

An Exciting Adventure!
I read this book and couldn't put it down. I loved it. It took me to a world of fantasy and enchantment! I hope that everyone who reads this will enjoy it the way that I did! When I was finished with More Minds I went and donated it to the library so other people could read it like yourselves. I am planning on reading the entire series because of how good More Minds was!

More Minds
This book and its prequel, Of Two Minds, are two of the best books I have ever read. Lenora and Coren are very believable people set in a world that is fun to read about. Get it because it is definately worth it.

Couldn't put this book down!!
It took me no time flat to read this book because it was so good! I hope everyone else can read this book so they will know what they have been missing. This book is the perfect sequel to "of two minds" and I cannot wait to read the third book in the series.

Perhaps a little confusing, but a good children's book
I really did like this book because it's just so much fun to read! It doesn't go very deeply into character analysis or the complexities of love, however, which was probably the intent of the authors since this was directed at children. The authors really did make these two worlds--one of Gepeth and Andilla with their petty preudices and hates and one of Grag, with its seemingly "perfect" society--realistic enough to appease even the most inquisitive eight-year-old. Caught up in the middle of this conflict is Lenora, who is enticed by the "perfect" society and pulls her betrothed Coren, who is inexplicably linked to her, in the conflict as well. Add the strange powers that both Coren and Lenora abuse in different ways and it makes an interesting read at the very least. The characteristics of these powers are not fully explained as it is complicated, but a bit of thinking and it will become clear.

Of Two Minds
I really love this book. I like reading fantasy and romance. This book has both but has more fantasy in it. Princess Lenora is a girl who is turning 17. Her father brings Prince Coren to her for her birthday. Her parents and Coren's parents wants them to marry. Before they met both saw something in a mirror or water. They both don't want to marry each other and some how they both think that there is something wrong with each other. They travel to a another world were they both most trust each other to save themselves and others. I think that anyone who loves fantasy with a little bit of romance should read this book and read the sequel to it. ("More Minds", "Out of Their Minds", and "A Meeting of Minds")

One Amazing Book
I really liked this book a lot! It was a mixture of fantasy, humor and a bit of romance. Somthing about the book made me keep reading for hours on end until the book was finished. Princess Lenora is from Gepeth, a country where everyone can imagine something and make it real. (I guess you won't need to go to the mall anymore.) But no one except Lenora will use their powers because it might upset the Balance. (Oh dear!) Prince Coren is from Andilla where people live in their minds. They can imagine they're eating fried chicken when what they're really eating is blue mush. (Yuck!) Instead of talking, they communicate with their minds. However, Coren doesn't like the idea of people being able to read his mind, so he decides to stop imagining a soft, fluffy bed and instead sleeps on a bumpy, old, real, bed. Well, these two young royals are to be married. (Not of their own free will) During the ceremony, Lenora transports both of them to a world she sees in a basin of water. They find that in that world, they are unable to use their powers. Soon Coren and Lenora figure out what's going on and who is causing all of the problems. You have to read this book and its sequels!

Greater Than Angels
Greater Than Angels is a great book.It takes place during the fall of 1940.Anna Hirsch and her family and friends are Jews and they get deported from Germany to France by the Nazis. They are put in a refugee camp in Gurs.Anna and other younger children are aranged to go to Le Chambon.Rudi and Klara which are two of Anna friends live with her at a Swiss Red Cross home.Rudi gets it arraged for Klara and Anna to go to Switzerland .When Anna and Klara are getting on the train.Anna and Rudi realize they have feelings for each other. This is a powerful book that is very sad but also very funny.I hope you like it.

Best book I have ever read!
Anna is being kicked out of her home by the Nazis because she and her family are jews. Anna is sent to a refugee camp in Gurs, she stays there for a while; but then all the young people must go to a red cross home is Le Chambon. Anna and her friends Rudi and Klara go to the swiss red cross home. There, they go to school and eat normal food. Rudi figures out a way to send Anna and Klara to Switzerland. Right when they are about to leave, Rudi and Anna find out they have feelings for eachother. I recommend this book to people who like to read about the old days, I cried, and I laughed in this book. I hope you like it too!

Greater Than Angels: a Story of Faith, Friends, and Courage
Greater Than Angels is a heartwarming story of friendship, faith, and courage. Anna is a sassy, opinionated, young woman who is sent along with her family to Gurs by the Nazis. Gurs is a French "refugee" camp that has terrible conditions. After many long months the Swiss Red Cross arranges for Anna, and her friends Klara, and Peter, along with other young Jews to stay in Le Chambon. This French town offers to hide the Jews. But Anna knows that this can't go on forever. With the war seeming that it had no end, Anna and her friends must experience an adventure that will change their lives dramatically.
I highly recommend this book to readers who have a hunger for a roller coasters of a book. This story is a different angle from most Holocaust books because it is a story of survival. It had diverse characters unlike most Holocaust tales where all the characters seem the same. Read Greater than Angels and I'm sure it'll take you on an adventure of your own.

If you tell too many monster stories, you might become one
Lucy loves monsters, and feels right at home talking about them, living with them, and bringing them home to meet her parents. Librarians and teachers - beware of invitations to student's homes for dinner! I liked this book because of the surprise ending!

Suspenseful book
Lucy loves monster stories. She loves telling them to her brother and scaring him. Then one day she discovers that the librarian Mr. Mortman is a *ZIPPPPP!* Im zipping my lips! You have to read the book to find out what he is... and if Lucy will ever survive.

Monster Review
This book is about a girl obsessed with monsters. She saw the librarian man eating flies and spiders and turning into a monster. After a near escape her parents invite him over for dinner, only he's the dinner! I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes Goosebump books.

After The War
Carol Matas's book After the War gives me a feel of what it was like to be a survivor of World War II. She does an excellant job of describing new things to us that were there back in the 1940s. This book is about a young girl whose reletives have all died in the war and so she decides to join an underground organization to transport Jewish children illegally to Palestine.

Excellent. Taught me to feel as the Holocaust surviviors.
This book taught me to feel how a Holocaust survivor felt after the war. I've heard and read about how these people lived through the war, but I hadn't had any insight on how someone deals with such experiences after he/she knows for sure they've made it through. On the negative side, the book is too short. Also, it doesn't have enough suspense as to whether the characters in the book will succeed in reaching Palestine

Are you interested in the Holocost? This book is for you!
Have you read 100(or more) books on the Holocost? Well, if you have this is a must read book! After the War gave me my first real insight into post-war Europe and what it was like for the few Jewish survivors. In this superb and touching story Carol Matas portrays a young girl striving for life. I highly recomend this book to anyone interested in World War Two and the construction of the Jewish State.

The best holocaust book i have ever read!
... This is a wounderfull book about the courage of a jewish girl during World War Two. This book, by Carol Matas, is an inspiring book and one of the best Holocaust books I have ever read. Marisa (the main characer) is a jewish girl during World War Two. With her blond hair and blue eyes she could pass for a pole, but why should she live when her mamma, pappa and most of her family are dead? Marisa has to reach deep inside herself and dscover the courage that he never knew she had to surive. I loved this book and I think everyone who loves people with courage, Holocaust stories, and loves to read realy good books with wounderful plots and meaning, this is deffently the best book for you! I hope you read it and enjoy it!

Superb!
This is a great book for people wanting to learn more about the Holocaust. This one is especially unique because the story is told through the perspective of a child. The novel is entitled, 'In My Enemey's House' because...she is! She is posing as a Pole (treated like rats at the time, but not nearly is bad as the Jews were treated), and goes through an organization, where she is sent to stay with an important Nazi officer and his family. In fact, a game played by the children is called "Jews Out," which was actually a non-fictional game played at that time period. How do I know this, do you ask? Carol Matas came to my school and had a speech of her books. This one was one of my favorites. Read it!

Absolutely wonderful
This book is a wonderful piece of Holocaust literature. The perspective that it is told from, the eyes of a Polish girl living as a servant in Nazi Germany, is one rarely written about in any teenage Holocaust books. This book is a must read for any teenager interested in the Holocaust, especially interested in the daily life of an Aryan youth. Once again, Carol Matas adds another spectacular addition to the world of teenage Holocaust literature.
