I heard about the book, Gary's Wish List and was curious, so I purchased it and read the entire book in one sitting. It took hours to finish the story but I couldn't put it down...the author takes you on a journey with her son and family that you shall never forget. Gary is a teenage boy diagnosed with leukemia. His personal journal and his mom's journal capture the essence of how a patient and care giver approach the same illness with different attitudes and concerns. Gary's Wish List is a must read for everyone. It will help you understand how to help families in crisis, realize that God is with you even though it looks doubtful, and through the author's unveiling of her true feelings you can comprehend her anger and bravery as she worked her way through the grief process to lead a productive life. Gary's Wish List is an actual list of the teenager when he was in a protective environment. Gary's list and this story is one I shall always remember.

Gary's Wish List tells the story of Gary's remaining time on this earth. His mother, author and educator Mary Louise Selph deftly discusses all the ramifications of learning of her son's diagnosis. The guilt, the sadness, the feelings of defeat and desperation, the shock, confusion and inadequacy. And the anger and loss of faith.

Gary's words, in letters he wrote to friends and family, along with conversations with his immediate family shine a light of understanding and courage in the face of such a huge disaster. We learn how Gary finds the means to still be a teenager...and their reaction when the chemo wasn't working.

Pneumonia, weight loss, hair loss and weakness follow as well as a near-death experience from the chemo that was designed to strengthen Gary for a bone marrow transplant. During the brush with death Gary had an out-of-body experience that enabled him to relate everything that happened even though he was unconscious! All that was followed by the transplant, and protective isolation and radiation.

The treatment helped, but only for a while. Gary succumbed after nine months of a valiant fight. His funeral was held on what would have been his first day as a high school senior.

Gary's legacy is courage and the sacredness of life. Gary's Wish List is another. Mary Louise Selph has found the courage to write a page-turner of a book that enables the reader to walk in her shoes, and Gary's, too. In this reviewer's opinion, Gary's Wish List is a means to find peace through understanding!

I could not put Gary's Wish List down even though I was aware that Gary didn't survive. The author takes you on a journey that you'll never forget. The reader feels like they are sitting in the passenger's seat with the hero in the story. You laugh with the family, you ache during their tragedy, and when you've read the last sentence, one realizes that life is beautiful and that God is good. This book is a must read for anyone working with patients and those who are rearing children.

Matt Dudney is not only the son of legendary entertainer Barbara Mandrell, but also a well-trained gourmet chef. This is a great addition to any cookbook collection, with great recipes and insightful behind-the-scenes tales of the Mandrell family. I highly recommend this cookbook!!!

Matthew Dudney did an excellent job with this book. It has lots of great recipes that are easy to follow. It is also a great read. Matthew has included many family stories and pictures about his famous Mandrell family. It has a little bit of everything. I highly recommend this book to everyone whether you are a Mandrell fan or not. Try out some great recipes as well as learn some things about the family and see some great pictures!

I just came here looking for an update to my 1998 edition, and I can't see a pub. date for what's for sale. Over the last five years, I've seen many two-words turn into one word, and would love an update. This book is fast and easy to use. I have six copies--one for everyone in the office. What about jughandle or jug handle(the traffic engineering term)? It's not listed!

As a court reporter and a proofreader for a newspaper, I use this book religiously. This book is a must for anyone writing college papers or writing professionally.

I am a freelance (no hyphen, per the book!) proofreader and copyeditor, and I have an extensive reference library. I keep TWO copies of this book around so I don't have to go far to grab it. It's amazing how many times I look something up in this book, and the answer is almost always there. I recommend this book to most of my clients, as well, as it helps minimize how many corrections I need to make on their materials. It's compact and helpful. Keep one nearby. (I also do customized travel and restaurant research, and when I'm writing reports for my clients about the best places for them to travel and where to stay and eat, I keep encountering words that I want to double check.)It is definitely NOT just for someone responsible for proofreading. While the trend is away from hyphenation and toward "solid" words, this book helps clarify what the current approved format is.

I had the honor of taking a leadership class with Sarah Weddington where this book was used as a main text. The story of this accomplished woman bears testament to the changes fought for and won by women in the second wave of feminsim, both in the state of Texas and in the Nation.

Prior to reading this book, I knew that Roe vs. Wade originated in Texas, but I never actually understood how much things changed for women of my generation. Both women and men alike will marvel at the antiquated norms Weddington faced as a young woman and how she ultimately overcame them. For all of the frustrations I presently voice about the status of women in the world, I am not at all certain I would have her personal courage when faced with such overwhelming sexism.

As a Texas state legislator, she was responsible for an equal credit act, a rape reform bill (co-sponsored with another new female representative named Kathryn Bailey) and the state's Equal Rights Amendment. To realize that one woman had accomplished all of this is simply amazing and inspiring.

Although there is not as much White House era musings as I would have prefered, the fact that she got in when few presidents of either party appointed large numbers of women is really signifigant. Not satified with her own personal triumph, she then worked to ensure that future generations would not have the same hardship. Working alongside Midge Constanoza, Weddington used her position to encourage more women to get involved in policymaking.

Also heartening is Weddington's inclusion of steps to protect reproductive choice at the book's end.Unlike some other books on reproductive rights, the message comes in loud and clear: Defend choice every day and without compromise. The battles may be long and weary, but the nation cannot afford to abandon the 30 year old (at least in spirit) promise of women's bodily autonomy.

Even though the original version of the book was released during the 1992 elections, it is a message that bears repeating in every presidential campaign. Vote pro-choice and vote often to protect women's right to life.

This outstanding book offers an excellent perspective into the life of one of America's most important female attorneys. Regardless of one's political views on abortion, "pro-life" and "pro-choice" advocates alike can agree that Sara Weddington's critical role in this monumental turning point in U.S. abortion rights history serves as an important lesson on the development and evolution of leadership roles for, and the civil rights of, women. This book is for men just as much as it is for women. Men will gain an invaluable insight into their counterparts by adding significantly to their understanding of women. This book is a "must read" for any person of any political persuasion who wishes to add to their comprehension of the question of abortion, the rights of women, and the evolution of the leadership roles assumed by women.

Weddington's piece is not just about the culmination of Roe vs. Wade and beyond, but a heartfelt autobiography that helps readers understand and appreciate the challenges of women in the that time period. Readers can gain leadership secrets from the experiences of Weddington from Roe to her work in the White House.

As a young woman, it helped me understand how far women have come in the past century and be more thankful of women leaders, like Sarah Weddington.

Understanding Learning Disabilities is a wonderful book. I found it extremely informative. It is compiled in an easy to read format and it is thorough and well organized. I particularly liked the workbook pages, which you use to adapt to you own special needs. As a parent just beginning the special education journey with my child, I highly recommend this book.

I worked with the team of parents and professionals who wrote the original edition of this practical guide. It was a true labor of love involving many of us who began out work in this field prior to P.L. 94-142. It is so exciting to see that accumulated wisdom expanded and updated in the new edition. I especially like the practical tips on coping with the special education process ad the ideas for helping make the transition from K-12 to postsecondary settings. From preschool to college, Mrs. Trusdell and her team cover it all.

I volunteer for our local learning disabilities parent and teacher group. We view this book as REQUIRED READING for all parents of children with dyslexia or learning disabilities.

This book thoroughly covers all the basics -- explanations, case studies, resources and more. But the best asset of the book is that it is a true WORKBOOK where parents can use worksheets and templates to do things like keep schedules, record observations, track phone calls, plan for meetings with teachers or specialists, and record test scores and teacher comments.

Many of our parents use the book on an ongoing basis -- their copies are "worn and a bit tattered" which is evidence of the book's long term value to them.

I recommend the hardcover version, which is actually a three-ring binder format so you easily can add your own papers. You will quickly find that this book is an ideal tool for supporting your child's special education.

I used this book for a paper on feminism in post WWI France. It was amazing. Her book reads very well, and is well documented. She supports her facts with statistics, but also real life stories from the men at the front and the women holding down the fort. It was a great book for anyone interested in gender roles and identity in post WWI France.

The Long March, when his people were forced to walk from Florida to Mississippi all through one fearsome, killing winter.

The Long March is rich in American history & memory. The marvelous drawings create a magically real place. This is a must for anyone who loves looking at other ways to live in community; other ways of teaching the spirit to grow & learning about courage, wisdom & respecting the memories.

An amazing book - to be read & read again & again & the pictures to be studied & dreamed over. Beautifully evocative.

This is a truly delightful book. The drawings are lovingly created and the story is both touching and well written. What makes it even more compelling is that it is based on a wonderful true act of human generosity over 150 years ago, from one impoverished people to another, who, although worlds apart in both distance and cultures, had a common enemy, in hunger and oppression.

The author travelled to Oklahoma to research the book and has gone to great lengths to ensure the drawings are authentic as well as inspiring. I particularly like the drawings of the great-grandmother and indeed,the clever shadow of the American eagle when Choona raises his arms in the final drawing as well as the subtle, celtic symbols to be found in this same drawing. "The Long March" is a must for the millions of us with Irish-American heritage - every Irish American child should read this book!

Perfection may not be attainable, but as a beautiful book and a model study of a landmark work of architecture and landscape architecture this volume sets a high standard indeed. The photography is superb, the book design elegant, the production sumptuous. The subject in fact might be somewhat overwhelmed by the presentation, were the subject merely the "Big House" at Kykuit itself. The building was somewhat of a compromise design, remodeled once, involving two architects and an interior designer (all first class, of course). It is not the architecture of the main building, if tasteful, that alone warrants this lavish production, but rather it is the ensemble--the magnificent gardens featuring an important collection of sculpture, the interior enriched by a collection of art and sensitive decor, the varied ancillary structures, including Japanese structures, and the intimate view of Rockefeller family life at Kykuit. The text is unpretentious but well crafted. One suspects that every detail has been carefully researched and considered for relevance to the general reader. The tone is apt. A very talented and skilled team has produced a well-neigh perfect work of art about an important work of art.

As early as the 17th century, Dutch New Yorkers built family compounds in the Hudson River Valley north of Manhattan. Completed in 1913 for Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller, Kykuit (the names comes from the Dutch, "lookout")has been home to four generations of Rockefeller family members. Now owned by the National Trust for Historic Sites, Kykuit has only recently been open to the public.

The Beaux Arts estate, built by architects Delano and Aldrich, with formal gardens designed by landscape architect William Welles Bosworth, is a treasure-trove of rare antiques, fine furnishings, and invaluable artworks, most notably, Gov. Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Women Who Kept The Lights: An Illustrated History Of Female Lighthouse Keepers continues to be a unique and informative contribution to Lighthouse histories and studies. In an occupation dominated by males, Mary Louise and Candace Clifford reveal the names of 141 women who received official keeper appointments in the lighthouse service. More than twice that number received appointments as assistant keepers. Most of this number were wives, widows or daughters of former keepers, beginning with Hannah Thomas at Plymouth Light on the Massachusetts coasts in 1776 (her husband went off to fight the British), and ending with Fannie Salter, who tended the Turkey Point Light on Chesapeake Bay from her husband's death in 1925 until she retired in 1947. It was only with the introduction of automated lights by the U.S. Coast Guard in the 20th Century that the lighthouse keepers became obsolete and passed into history. "Must" reading for lighthouse history enthusiasts and women's studies groups, Women Who Kept The Lights wonderfully details the careers of 30 of these vigorous women.

Until I found this book listed by Amazon.com, I never realized women *were* lighthouse keepers. Clifford and Clifford's book will banish forever the image of the lighthouse keeper as crusty old batchelor, and will bring a renewed sense of awareness of the many accomplishments of which women are capable. The careful research done by the authors brings out a rarely publicized image of the women who tended the big lights, carefully pollishing the reflectors and the glass, keeping the lighthouses clean and functional, welcoming and educating visitors and doing their part - often heroically, to keep the vital paths of sea and lake open and safer by running these lights (often operating more than one beacon), running foghorns(either through mechanical devices or by hand), even saving lives. Through each vignette, a larger and more complete image emerges of the lives of the women who tended lighthouses, often while caring for invalid fathers and husbands, as well as bearing and raising children in these often-isolated locations. I must admit, I wish there had been more material on the west coast of America, and hope there might be a sequal. The photographs and sidebars added substance to this excellent publication. This will be a worthwhile addition to any library, especially if the reader enjoys American history and the role of women in American culture.

Burkhart's book is a collection of Nahuatl manuscripts with English translations that deal with the Virgin Mary prior to the development of the Guadalupe cult. Burkhart provides an interesting introduction and postscript to place matters in context. The book does not, however, really contain much information on the development of the Guadalupe cult. The reason for this is that there were virtually no Nahuatl materials dealing with Guadalupe until the mid seventeenth century.
