This is a wonderful retelling of a classic myth. It educates young readers about the origin of some symbols and themes that they have already seen in popular cartoons and comics such as Naoko Takeuchi's "Sailor Moon", Kosuke Fujishima's "Oh My Goddess" and Yuji Moriyama's "Project A-ko"

As a father tells his daughter a bedtime story, his lyrical words lead her on a whimsical journey "sailing away to the end of day, down the long winding river that goes to the sea." The illustrations, charming in their child-like simplicity yet rich with detail, are washed with white, giving them a dreamlike quality. Soothing, gentle, hypnotic--a lovely bedtime book!

For some reason I cry every time I read this book! A very moving story. My kids love it because it is a happy ending where a child searches their multi cultural roots. One of our favorites.
