Bien vale el tiempo necesario para leer y estudiarlas y compartir los artículos con otros trabajadores.

Este número contiene artículos con un análisis marxista de la historia del capitalismo desde la expansión en las décadas después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta el estancamiento y las crisis de los años 1980s y 1990s. Las condiciones para la expansión del capital, las relaciones entre trabajadores y capitalistas, la explotación de los países del Tercer Mundo, el papel de los bancos y las bolsas de valores --con sus maniobras financieras y sus escándalos-- , los raíces de la marcha de los imperialistas hacia la guerra: todo se encuentra aquí. También un artículo que ayuda mucho en entender el funcionamiento del sistema capitalista a nivel mundial: "La curva del desarrollo capitalista," por León Trotsky.

Otro artículo importante es "La defensa de Cuba, la defensa de la revolución socialista," escrito poco después de la caída de los regimenes estalinistas en Moscú y los países de Europa Oriental. My interest in Irish theatre brought me to this book. What a find! A fascinating look at a fascinating actor. The author brings alive the work and times of MacGowran. A well-researched and thorough work recommended for any student of theatre. I was especially impressed with the variety of interview subjects. Made me do a search for MacGowran's available work on video. While not a big fan of Beckett, I was impressed by the relationship between the playwright and this ultimate interpreter of his works.

This is an outstanding collection, even though the first story is really weak. Hamlin Garland's great story echoes "Cold Mountain," with a soldier returning home from the Civil War to the woman he loves. Oddly, the editors said Garland was "probably a minor talent." Ever read "Daughter of the Middle Border?" Garland was not prolific, but he was definitely MAJOR.

Great resource for law firms, i-banks, vc firms, law students, MBAs, etc. etc.

I purchased this cookbook because of a growing interest in the cooking of Latin America. The authors cover in depth cooking from the regions where the Maya, Aztec, and Inca kingdoms once reigned. Their knowledge of the history and food culture of each region is evident. I have made recipes from all three sections, and although all dishes have come out well, I think that this book's strength is in the recipes from Peru and Chile. Pastel de Choclo (sort of a casserole of beef and corn) and Papas a la Huancaina (potato salad with cheese and chili dressing) were particular standouts. I have tried these recipes from other cookbooks, and this book's versions were the best.

Some specialty ingredients are needed, but many recipes can be prepared with basic ingredients from the supermarket, and the authors give suggestions for substitutions when possible (which I have sometimes used with successful results). Very helpful instructions are included for preparing some of the ingredients on your own at home.

I had the pleasure of attending the class that Jack Levin teaches at Univ. Chicago's law school where this book is the text book. I was surprised to find how readable the text is considering the complexity of the subject matter. Having read other texts on the subject, I can say that this is by far the most readable and accurate resource on these subjects. The front half of the book is the text the authors wrote and is organized from forming the company through making growth equity investments, LBOs, roll-ups, exit strategies and finally forming the PE fund. The latter half of the book contains excerpts of relevant SEC regs and IRS code as reference material for the topics covered in the first half of the book.

Even if you don't have time to read the whole text, it is a very easy to use reference for almost any issue that comes up in these types of transactions. If you are more on the M&A side, I also highly recommend the companion 3 book set titled "Mergers, Acquisitions, and Buyouts".

When I whipped up a quick Web page for our Engineering College students about Repetitive Strain Injury back in 1994... at first there was only one book on it: Pascarelli and Quilter's "Repetitive Strain Injury". Over time I read more books, heard from other people about still others, and the book list and Web page kept getting longer. Today it's pretty big and with so many books listed the question I ask myself is "what would a new book on RSI have to be like for me to add it to all the stuff that's already out there?"

I got the answer to that when I read "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! RSI Theory and Therapy for Computer Professionals", by Suparna Damany, MSPT and Jack Bellis. This book easily makes the "must read" category: in fact, in my opinion it makes it to the "if-you-only-get-one-book-on-RSI- get-this-one" category, although I don't think anything totally bumps Pascarelli and Quilter out of the number one spot. What I've said of P&Q, I say of this book: every computer professional needs to read it.

What's so great, other than the intriguing title? To begin, this book is a "second generation" work on RSI. That is, it draws on the literature, experiences, and discussions of patients and health care professionals who have been dealing with computer-related injuries over the past decade. As I read it I felt like I had a summation of almost everything I've ever read on the SOREHAND e-mail list regarding causes, symptoms, treatment, and prevention, edited and well-presented in 230 pages. The authors' sources are discussed and presented *within the main text of the book* instead of in an appendix: and the authors' boldness in their convictions and suggestions is balanced by their strong encouragement to consult these other sources. Much of earlier RSI discussion and literature has tended to be cautious about ascribing causes and prescribing remedies, on the basis that people differ in their physiques, environment, activities, etc. Damany and Bellis shake off this caution, pointing out that there is so much that serious computer users have in common that distracting people with incipient RSI with too many options, some of them unlikely, may delay the action that needs to be taken. They do urge professional medical intervention for people with stage 2 RSI (defined in their book) but say that people with any trouble can immediately start addressing the root causes and draw from what has been learned to be true of the great majority of RSI sufferers.

Damany and Bellis are candid: they speak of "our theory" of RSI and instead of standing on authority are clear that what they present is how they believe RSI happens. They have done an excellent job at distinguishing root causes ; initial results; secondary results that become causes; and ultimate results in the painful circle of cumulative trauma injuries. They point out how discussions dealing with RSI, and treatment approaches to it, frequently are sidetracked by focussing on things that are results and symptoms instead of true causes.

Having read a lot of RSI literature I'm also aware that effectively presenting the welter of information - human anatomy, injury processes, diagnoses, therapies, prevention, ergonomics, exercises/stretches, lifestyle issues, etc. - is a daunting challenge. I think some people well versed in this subject area might be surprised how far into the book some "common" information is ultimately presented. Workstation ergonomic recommendations are fully dealt with only at page 193. However, on balance I think the authors have put the information in about as good a sequence as one could hope to have. Additionally, the writing style is personable, direct, and engaging.

Not only did this book make a good impression on somebody who's "read it all before"; I did learn new things. Not the least significant is that the shoulder and upper back problems that became serious for me only in the last year (over 5 years from my first encounter with RSI) are not unusual and in some ways are foundational to the whole RSI picture. Now, Pascarelli and Quilter's book DID prominently feature shoulder/back exercises as important for recovery and prevention: I just didn't think it was that important. I got past my "forearm tendonitis" to essentially being pain-free and functional .. . but the other upper-body weaknesses were lying in wait, and increased guitar playing brought on a whole raft of new symptoms (like hand numbness) that I had never experienced during my earlier, painful experiences. Damany and Bellis' emphasis and explanation of these particular issues completely align with what my doctor and physical therapist asserted when they sucessfully treated me for these new problems.

I think this up-to-date work really does cover it all. Well illustrated, to the point, firm in recommendations, it's hard for me to think of a better "starting point" for any "newbie" with RSI symptoms.

I read "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!" and all I can say is it's a great book. I've determined that my particular problem is that the ulnar nerve in my elbow is being pressed on because I'm constantly supporting my entire upper body by putting my elbows on the arm rests of my chair. This has caused serious irritation to the nerve and recently I've been waking up in the middle of the night because my pinky and part of my ring finger is numb. To anyone with RSI, I can't recommend the book strongly enough. It is by far the best book on the subject. I even gave my Doctor a copy of it because he, like most, is totally clueless about RSI. Even I knew I didn't have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome after doing 5 minutes of research, yet that's all he kept talking about was Carpal Tunnel. Not once did he even attempt to address the root cause(s) of my problems ... he just wanted to give me anti-inflammatory drugs and told me to wear a brace. No thanks. This book really opened my eyes ... it should be mandatory reading for all Doctors.

I have had RSI since early 1993 and have read many books and articles on the subject. In addition, I have had physical therapy at several different locations over the course of several years. This book is excellent. It explains how RSI is caused and it has an excellent treatment program. It also has a detailed prevention program, as well as a treasure trove of additional resources. This book should be read by anyone who has RSI, treats RSI patients, or uses a computer.

In his Foreword to this reference book, Donald Rumbelow states that "contrary to popular belief, the pre-occupation with the Ripper is not anti-feminist".

Oh, thank you for the sour persimmons, Donald Rumbelow. Now all can revel in the mystery of Jack the Ripper with clear consciences and without having to worry about being affiliated with those horrible (chooey!) anti-feminists.

And your clarification was necessary because, as everyone knows, when we are not blowing up abortion clinics, anti-feminists are indeed in the habit of committing serial murders of women and ritualistically using their blood to brew our sacred malt liquor.
Sheesh!

And Rumbelow also states that he has no doubt that the mystery will eventually be solved. He wrote that in 1991 before the Maybrick Diary was publicized, but some of us think that the Maybrick Diary contains the solution to the mystery, and yet the debate rages on.

What would have to happen in order for the mystery to be solved to the satisfaction of MOST, let alone EVERYONE? In the wake of the Maybrick storm, Rumbelow's prediction seems naïve today.

But notwithstanding the Forward, this is a very good reference work, usable for both novice and expert, for which the editors, Paul Begg, Martin Fido, and Keith Skinner deserve much credit.

They appear to have overlooked no detail of information or speculation or tradition associated with Jack the Ripper. When one sees an entire entry devoted to "Smith, H - Undertaker of Hanbury Street, who supplied hearse for Annie Chapman", one must acknowledge that the editors truly appear to have left no stone unturned.

Maybe they went a little too far. Does it advance the study of the Ripper mystery to list every fanciful movie or TV show based on that theme, including the Star Trek episode "Wolf in the Fold"?

The authors are modest enough about what they have done and do not vouch for 100% accuracy, but as corrections are brought to their attention, they appear to be dutifully acknowledged and included in each new edition of this book.

Where there are disputes, the authors usually present all sides well and demonstrate impartiality in their analysis. Usually. I especially appreciate their presentation of the dispute over the "Lusk kidney" (genuine kidney removed from Ripper victim, Catherine Eddowes, or medical student hoax?)

But what's this - "(O)n the basis of handwriting analysis, there currently seems little doubt that Maybrick did not write the Journal"? Uh - no. Even the most stalwart Maybrickian might have to admit that the handwriting in the diary is a problem, but that remark from "A to Z" unacceptably crosses the boundary between impartial analysis and opinion.

And what of the famous "Dear Boss" letters written to the Central News Agency, which were signed "Jack the Ripper", from which the East End murderer acquired his legendary nickname? If the letters were contemporary hoaxes and weren't written by the murderer, it isn't really accurate to refer to the murderer as "Jack the Ripper".

When the editors solemnly intone (correctly) that "most researchers" have concluded that the letters were indeed hoaxes, I am inclined to believe that they are slyly using the weight of majority opinion to browbeat the reader into agreeing.

Begg and Fido are certainly part of the "growing consensus" on this issue - do they ever advertise a willingness to go AGAINST the consensus?

And yet, among other things, the "Dear Boss" letters were taken seriously at the time by the police and were written by someone who appears to display the extreme cocksureness of the serial killer. They were written by someone who seems to know that human blood thickens quickly and can't be saved for later use as ink. And they were written by someone who seems POSITIVE that more murders are yet to come. Moreover, they are written in the same hand as that which wrote a threatening letter to a police witness who might have seen the murderer - hardly the work of a hoaxing publicity hound.

So why the consensus AGAINST the authenticity of these letters? Could it be that most Ripperologists have their own favorite suspects, who were unable or unlikely to have written the "Dear Boss" letters, and that these Ripperologists merely alter their view of the letters to conform to their own pre-drawn conclusions?

Begg and Fido wrote about the Ripper before publishing this reference work. Each of them named a different poverty-stricken lunatic semi-literate Polish Jew as the most likely Ripper candidate. Neither of their candidates could have written in the good copperplate hand that wrote the "Dear Boss" letters. Are Begg and Fido expediently allowing their objectivity to be clouded by taking false reassurance from the opinion of "most researchers"?

Ripperologists are confident about issues such as this because of consensuses that they learn about by reading the works of Ripperologists. Did the police operate this way? No wonder Jack was never caught in his lifetime.

In their published commentary about Jack the Ripper, Begg, Fido, and Skinner have proven themselves to be of impartial disposition and advocates of fair treatment for all points of view. They have shown themselves to be friends of the truth, whatever that truth may prove to be. But I am reminded of a book on realpolitik that I once read, in which it was observed that a friend is someone that you can trust 80% of the time.

With that in mind, a rating of four stars out of a possible five seems quite appropriate.

I found this book extremely well researched, well done begg,fido and skinner. I have been interested in the jack the ripper mystery for some years now,and this book was the first to introduce me to such little known suspects as william h piggot.He was arrested in a public house not far from whitechapel after causing a disturbance, and was found to have a torn bloodstained shirt in his possession plus a severe bite mark on his hand(the day after a ripper murder).Then there was edward mckenna, arrested for suppossedly threatening people with a knife.When he was taken to the police station for questioning and told to empty his pockets, they contained amongst other things several metal and cardboard boxes!(the ripperologists out there will know) that a month after mckenna was arrested,Mr lusk recieved a human kidney delivered by post in a (cardboard box). These little gems of knowledge have been brought to life in this alphabettically arranged guide of who's who ,from the bobby on the street to the head of police investigations.A breath of fresh air, much better than the usual claptrap about the prince of wales etc.

I had to write a research paper on the Ripper murders, and I found this book invaluable. Grab it as soon as possible. I reccommend it 100%
