Woven with Love
A beautifully illustrated book written by Omar S. Castaneda who was born in Guatemala and teaches writing at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. The artist, Enrique O. Sanchez was born in the Dominican Republic and has worked as a graphic artist for Sesame Street. Together they create magic.

Esperanza is a girl who is learning to weave with her grandmother, Abuela. On the day of the Fiesta de Pueblos in Guate, they decide to reveal their work to the world.

"Esperanza, however, wore her favorite huipil: it was a white blouse with red, blue and green threads in the rectangular collar. Under that, the colors bled into silver and blue, and hidden within the intricate designs of the blouse were tiny quetzals flying freely in the threads the way they once flew in the great forests of Guatemala."

They have to take a bus and then finally they arrive in the city. Once Esperanza starts to hang up her work, people start to look at the elaborate weavings and some even take pictures. She sells all the items and her grandmother is very proud of her.

A loving story that follows in the tradition of Guatemala's legendary artisans.

A touching story about family, responsibility, and Guatemala
After returning from a solo trip to Guatemala, I was looking for a way to give my children a sense of what the country is like - not just what I saw there, but what I felt, being among the Maya. This book provided me with the tool I was looking for. This touching story weaves the importance and closeness of Mayan family, the responsibility that Mayan children must assume early in life, and a bit of the mystery surrounding the people into a wonderful tale. Reading Abuela's Weave to my children was one of the only times I have ever cried over a children's book.

The kids liked it, too.

A Marcuse translation is an excellent translation.
Marcuse's translations are always excellent, and this one is no exception. It is not flawless, but it is excellent nonetheless. I have read this translation several times, checking it against the text from which it was translated. There were no grammatical errors to be corrected. I chose to word some sentences differently, to suit my regional native Spanish, but speaking as a professional translator, this translation is well crafted.
I would have to disagree with the Horn Book review. This translation is well executed. While the reviewers may be experts in children's literature they seem to be lacking a grasp of the Spanish language, even at a children's level. In either language this edition of El gato con botas is well deserving of the Caldecott Honor Book award.

A wonderful translation of a children's classic!
Huevos verdes con jamon is a wonderful translation of Dr. Suess' Green Eggs and Ham. It rhythmically illustrtates Ramon desperatly trying to get his friend to eat green eggs and ham. Ramon tries to persuade him to eat them in outrageous places with a variety of different animals. The Spanish translation maintains Dr. Suess' characteristic rhyming style and children of all ages thoroguhly enjoy it!

Excellent story for sharing with kids of all ages!
Lizard's Song is the story of a lizard who teaches his friend Bear his favorite song ("Zoli, zoli, zoli...Rock is my Home"), only to discover that Bear keeps on forgetting it. Ultimately , Lizard realizes that the problem lies in the song, which is about Lizard's home. When he makes the song about Bear's home(..Cave is my home")Bear never forgets the song again. Share this story with anyone, but especially share it with homesick preschoolesrs, and remember to ask them at the end what they live in, and make a song for each of them never to forget.

Always great
As an elementary school Spanish teacher this book is a lifesaver. While I found some of the translations slightly unusual it is a great way to use childrens literature to teach many subjects in Spanish. Since it is a favorite of all children and so well known the book is easily understood and can teach number, colors, days of the week, and the life cycle of a caterpillar.

Dr. Seuss Teaches a Lesson
What a fabulous book! The Lorax is one of my favorite books. In the Lorax, Dr. Seuss uses compelling illustrations and rhyme to teach a valuable environmental lesson to children and adults. He writes about the importance of taking care of our Earth and its resources. Readers are transported to a beautiful world in which animals and plants are thriving. As the story unfolds, readers learn about the effects of greed and destruction a group of people can have on the environment. In the end, the readers are taught the lesson of what can happen to our Earth and its resources if we do not take care of them. What an exceptional book for children and adults to read! Thank you Dr. Seuss!!

I like Dr. Seuss
I always loved Dr. Seuss. My favorite book is called The Lorax because I liked when this guy came to this land started to build a factory, and started chopping trees down. Then there was this Lorax who came and told him to stop chopping the truffula trees down. I liked the pictures. In the beginning they were dark and in middle part they were light and colorful. The end was dark again. The kids under 5 and 7 would like the book because of the rhyming and color. It is about polluting and a cautionary tale so the kids won't pollute. I recommend it to little kids.

Not your typical Dr. Seuss Book
It's not The Cat in the Hat. This Dr. Seuss book has a message. Believe it or not, the first time I was exposed to The Lorax was in my undergraduate Ecology course. It tells a story of greed and excess. It also shows that what we do impacts the environment and other species. The Lorax pops in now and then to remind the greedy Onceler that he is cutting down too many trees, destroying other animals homes, and polluting the air and water to boot. However, his message isn't well received and finally the last tree falls. It is only at the end the the Onceler realizes his mistake, but is powerless to act. It is up to you. "Unless someone like you care a whole lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." It is important to note though that it is all done in typical Dr. Seuss fashion, with rhyming and nonsensical words that makes his work so popular with kids. I would have to agree that this may be the most important Dr. Seuss book ever.

Wonderfully Rhymed in Spanish
As a child I loved to read Dr. Seuss in english, with its witty and funny rhymes so I was delighted to find a translation in spanish for my daughter to read and further delighted when the translation was so well done that it was as fun and witty as the original version. The story is a perfect example of how resisting to try new things is sometimes downright silly. It is one of our favorites to read at any time during the day!

Delightful to read!!
We had the English version of this book before finding the Spanish one and couldn't imagine the Spanish version could be as much fun as the original. Boy, were we pleasantly surprised! The translations are fantastic -- not a literal translation in all instances but excellently done to preserve Dr. Seuss' great rhyming tradition. Our 18 month old loves to hear us read it and I'm certain the rhythmic verses have a lot to do with it! The illustrations are also colorful, as with most Dr. Seuss books. I hope more Spanish-version Seuss books come out. Highly recommended!

A wonderful, fun book
I bought this book for 2 reasons. The first was to help me practice my Spanish. The second was to read it to Spanish children that are in my congregation. The children love it! Their reaction is just like English-speaking children listening to the same book. A definite must buy.
