Truth speaks for itself
I bought the book whilst in Lindos in the summer of 2000, and i found it an entertaining, yet informative book about the village.

I had been to Lindos before and the stories in the book cease to amaze me, I know many of the characters personally and feel it is a great way to get to know the village better.

Overall it is a wonderful fusion, the characters set against the traditional Greek village life makes it a book for everyone, regardless of whether they have been to Lindos or not.

Dancing on the Tables
The title itself explains a lot of the intentions of the author, which mainly consist of relating his experiences as an expatriate in the lovely town of Lindos on Rhodes Island.

What separates Willard Manus' book from others of the genre--such as The Island of the Second Vision by Albert Vigoleis Thelen, which relates Thelen's sometimes surreal experiences on Mallorca from the early '30s to the days of the Spanish civil war--is that Manus includes some juicy gossip about people who are in no way unknown, such as the Pink Floyd band, novelist Richard Hughes and film director Hans Geissendorfer.

The entire change the village, Greece and the world suffered from the early '60s to the late '80s can be experienced reading this book and this atmosphere of change can be felt chapter after chapter. The tone of the book subtly moves from the unencumbered times before the Greek dictatorship of the Junta to the wild times of flower power to the almost senseless times of the '80s .

Personally, I would have liked a less superficial way of dealing with the Greek folk culture and a cover that depicts a little more of the reality of the '90s in Lindos than the almost idyllic image from the late '70s. But this book makes a wonderful read!

Overall, I would say it is two thumbs up, and it is surely one of the few books that I have encountered that urged me to read it from cover to cover in one sitting.

It's Brilliant!
A candid insight into how Lindos on the island of Rhodes (Rhodos) grew to be what it is today.

The book is based on the experiences of the author over a 35-year association with Lindos, and provides marvellous detail of how a very typical, unspoilt Greek village became an icon for European mass tourism. But more than just a historical account, it provides a human element to the effects of change.

The characters and the interaction between the locals and the foreigners (some very famous) are described with great detail and sense of humour. Some of these encounters are quite outrageous and need to be read.

Willard Manus has included many personal details of the events that shaped the lives of himself and his family, and these are very touching at times.

The commentary relating to Greek and world events that occurred during the period covered by the book is written in such a way that it links these events with the lives of local people and close associates of the author.

Whilst entertaining, 'This Way to Paradise - Dancing on the Tables' is also touched by sadness both for the individuals described in the book and for the way that Lindos changed.

I first discovered the book on sale in Lindos Library (which bizarrely doubles up as a Laundromat!) during one of my many visits to the village. I found it fascinating and enjoyed reading every page.

If you have never visited Lindos then this book should wet your appetite. But if you are a regular visitor and have fallen in love with the place, the book should answer many of the questions that will have arisen in your mind.

Easy to learn...
I have not taken any piano lessens before. Now I can play two tunes," The Entertainer" and " Que Sera Sera" in one month by just following the instruction in the book. I am really happy with this book. When my friend listened to my play through the telephone, she said she wanted to buy the book.

Nice book!
I've gained a farely good skill at piano in just a few months with this book. I would recomend it to any beginner. Good luck!

Excellent Book for the Beginning Adult Piano Student
I am using this book for piano lessons I started taking in early January. I've wanted to learn how to play the piano my whole life and now at 40 I decided to do it. This book makes it very easy, so far anyway! The pace is steady, I look back now at the songs in the beginning that I struggled with and they are so easy! The combination of warm-ups and songs are just right. I highly recommend this book!

Great book for adults with no prior experience on piano
This was my first book for piano and there are very few dislikes.I thought it was easy enough to understand from piece to piece it never got so hard that I could not understand the piece but, some pieces took time to figure out.I liked the way it taught the theory nothing went over my head but, I do wish it went more into theory that's why I'm getting level 2 in this series.
Overall, I am very satisfied I might recommend getting the cd if you want to make learning even easier but, now I can sightread music now and know little basic theory which is all that I'm looking for.If I can read I can get as many theory books as I want later.

Highly Reccomended
I am a college student that only had a few years of piano in elementary school, but was frustrated because all my friends could play well known songs, however my book only included songs written by the author. I wasn't interested in songs no one had ever heard of! So I was pleased when I started using this book now becuase I already knew what some of the songs sounded like and could play them much more easily! I don't dread practice time anymore! Now I know popular songs, even though at an easy level

Excellent way to get started!
I purchased this book from a local music store. From an Adult Beginner viewpoint, I think it is an excellent book for Adults to get started. I like the way the music is logically grouped, intergrating new material in an appropriate manner. It does not assume that the reader already knows how to read music. If you purchase this book, and follow its instructions, it is my opinion that soon you will be playing music you never thought possible...And this is the objective. However, I would recommend purchasing the accompanying CD as well, because there are some songs that I was not familiar with and I think it is good to hear these songs to know the proper way in which they should be played.

A fun, quick read
While not the deepest book on the market, I found The Pigskin Rabbi to be fun, uplifting and an easy read. It's a clever premise, and Manus takes it everywhere it can possibly go without beating it to death. I recommend it highly as a fun, summer read.

Not good for me!
I find you must of have the audio part with lesson part or this series. I called my local music store where I bought Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course : Lesson Book, Level one and wanted to get the audio part. I called my local music store where I bought the person who spoke to me said they woul other the part and then call at the end of that week. No call. I think without the audio part you have to take lessons from some one. I don't won't to do that yet. One star maybe to much? .

ALfred's Adult Piano
If you want to learn how to play the piano, you must use Alfred's Adult Piano Course. I have been playing the piano for about 5 years and have used both this course and the Bastien series to teach myself how to play. I can honestly say that I can play, talk, and theorize about music as well as anyone...All because of these books and this course. A friend of mine attended the NY School Of Music and plays the trumpet professionally. I think I know just as much as he does. If you are serious about learning the piano and about music reading and theory, and are motivated enough to put a little extra effort......BUY THIS COURSE. It's approach is geared towards the adult learner, covers every aspect of music and thoery (that is every key, their minors, chords, chord building, etc.). With each step you learn new songs that increase in intensity and difficulty as you progress. However, the difficulty between stages is seldom felt by the student. When you reach level 3 - you play classics by the best. Bach, Pachelbel, Beethoven, etc. You will be amazed at how easy it is to learn...........and bear in mind, I am just an owner of a steel fabrication plant with no prior music knowledge or experience or training. Good luck to anyone who purchases this course. It is the very best. Thanks.

For a Piano Dropout
I returned to the piano after 40 years and needed something gentle to ease my re-entry. Both levels One and Two of this book were extremely helpful. I did each chapter two or three times and found something "returning" to me as I went along. I went through the entire book in just one day (albeit a long day) and had a tremendous sense of satisfaction at making music again. This is not a beginners book, nor is it for perfectionists and didactic piano teachers. But if you used to play the piano and loved it (but dropped out from weariness with the torture treatment) this is the book for you. Play for yourself, for the love of music, and for fun. On to Level Three!
