GREAT LEARNING TOOL!
This book is a true treasure for youth theatre, because it not only talks about every aspect of the theatre in a way that kids can understand, but it also reinforces a lot of the things we like to teach our young artists. It also has hands-on extra activities that allow the young artists to take what they learn a step further. An extremely clear table of contents and layout of the book covers everything from building a team to preparing the show and what it takes to put a show together; from learning to act to makeup, sound, and props. A one-page glossary at the end of the book reviews many of the terms that every young actor needs to know. Whereas this book is only 48 pages long, it is intended to give a general overview of each topic and not intended to make the student a "pro." I am thrilled with the basic content and will now use this book as a manual for all of our youth programs here at the Majestic Theatre.

All kinds of mommies
What a delightful book! My 3 year old daughter loves this book as it is filled with many types of Mommies, human and animal, and how they take care of thier young. Espcially nice to see is the human mom breastfeding her baby (no bottles in sight--other animals nurse their young too!). The book shows protective moms and busy moms and sweet moms and "wild" moms (yes, there is a tattooed and peirced mom with green hair--so what, lets teach our children NOT to judge people by their looks!) And of course all the animal counterparts.

If you want a wonderful book showing the all the great qualities human moms have and who their counterparts are in the animal kingdom, plus a great introduction to animals in general, then I highly suggest you buy this book!

Vikings rule!
Fascinating and -- for a picture book -- surprisingly detailed look at Viking life. Hand-lettered sidebars complement the typeset text. Realistic drawings of Viking artifacts are interspersed among whimsical cartoons of the narrator and his family. Includes some gross details that kids will love (such as the latrines) as well as history, art, religion, and sports.

Wonderful for young children
My toddler loves this book! She identified with the babies and learned that other animals nurse just as she does. It also put the babies in the womb into some sort of a context for her which is helping to prepare her for her new sibling. This is a good book for breastfed children and attachment parents.

A must have for teaching food chains
I have taught about food chains for 5 years to my students but had always been frustrated by one fact. Every kid's book I had found on the subject did not deal with the final key step - the death of an animal which is decomposed and eventuallly returns to soil and helps nourish a new plant.
This book discusses this step in the cycle with very simple - 5 and 6 year old friendly - text and pictures. When last we read it in my 1st and 2nd grade class, thre was clamour for repeated readings and acting out of the "story".
Sure, the subject may be a bit gruesome if you're cuddling up for a bedtime read, but for getting a concept accross to young minds - this book fills a significant gap.
I highly recommend it.

Wash, scrub, brush!
A good introduction to hygiene (including some of the "why bothers"). There is a small glossary at the back of the book defining terms such as germs, bacteria, earwax... I was hoping, however, for a simpler text for my toddler. Perhaps I am underestimating my daughter, but I am guessing that the word disease is not in her vocabulary yet! So, I will add my own comments. When a "sidebar" says "There are more harmful germs and bacteria under your fingernails than on a toilet seat!" I will simply add "Germs make you sick!" or some such sentence. All in all, a good basic introduction to hygiene.
