Story of struggle and inspiration
The Walls of Jericho offers a riveting, close-up and personal review of the political struggles of the Civil Rights movement, seen through the eyes of three is its major protagonists. Author Robert Mann carries us to know and understand southerner, racist Richard Russell, southerner human rights supporter Lyndon Johnson, and northerner firebrand liberal Hubert Humphrey. We agree with them, or disagree with them, Mann allows us to understand where they are coming from. In the end, they are good men trying to do good things, as they see them to be good. I was emotionally struck in reading about the personal, political, and social interplay.

A highly perceptive and well written account.
This is a clear discussion of the process whereby civil rights legislation passed the Senate in the late 1950's and the 1960's, despite the filibusters threatened and actual of the Southern Democratic senators. It could easily have been a book about political re-alignment as well, but it would probably need to be twice as long. Many of the trends that dictated the course of American politics in the 1960's are seen in microcosm in this book - Would the South bolt the Democratic Party? Would the Democrats capture the African-American vote from the party of Lincoln? Could a Southern Democrat win the Whitehouse? Would the Dixiecrats throw the presidency to the GOP? It is an extremely clear narrative, that occasionally looks at the bigger picture of American politics, and records the force of personality in parliamentary politics. It clearly records the seismic changes that the wily and calculating LBJ, as an otherwise unelectable Southern Democrat, wrought to the Democratic Party after President Kennedy's death, in the search for a personal victory in the 1964 presidential election.

An excellent book on civil rights and politics
Having grown up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Hubert Humphrey is remembered and revered, and then living in Atlanta, Georgia for 14 years, the land of Martin Luther King and Richard Russell (and the region of LBJ), I was very intrigued by the subject of this book. I also found it refreshingly evenhanded, yet an intimate and personal view into one of the most important periods of American history, written about a subject that not only is in the forefront of out collective attention, but has been so since before our nation was founded. Not only that, it was a good read, with as much excitement and plot twists as the latest from Grisham.

If you are at all interested in Civil Rights, or you just like reading about politics, this is a very good place to start.

Buddhism: The Plain Facts

An extraordinary achievement
The authors have managed to extract the very pith of the Buddha's teaching and presented in way that is both informative and challenging. Given the potential complexity of the subject matter, this is an extraordinary achievement. Any reference to extraneous issues has been eschewed and the 'plain facts' of the title turn out to be the only facts needed to come to a complete understanding of the path to enlightenment. Highly recommended.

Simple, direct and down to earth
Bouddhism, plain facts explains you the precepts of Buddha, in a plain and simple language, always going back to down to earth explanation, without jargon, or a lingo to difficult. This book is a great start for anyone who wants to know more about The Buddha, and the meanings of his teaching. It explains clearly Buddhism is a personal quest. Very good, simple and well written.

Dont believe what this book says - try it for yourself!
This elegant book is the ideal volume for anyone who wants to know about Buddhist meditation - from hesitant enquirer to committed meditator. I first read it on a six day meditation retreat and was bowled over by its lack of jargon and they way it deals with the path to enlightenment in every-day language. The short chapters make it easy to dip into. But then it is difficult to stop reading, as each page has some really useful advice or brilliant observation on every aspect of the path. It is obviously written by people who write from many years experience of meditation and meditators, and who know all the pitfalls and all the joys of following the Buddha's path to enlightenment. If you want to do away with suffering - read it!

The Definitive Guide...
Many people argue the flies look "too good" in this book to be real. But I have to say if you want a book that not only gives _the_ most complete history of the flies within, but a book that gives a _clear_ picture of what the fly should look like, then look no further. I had the opportunity to meet with author/illustrator Chris Mann in Cheltenham, England March 2002. I sat with him as he illustrated a fly for one of his upcoming books. The flies are illustrated with every detail involved and constructed on screen as you would tie them: every hair, every thread wrap, every fiber, every shadow and every hue is represented just as Chris sees the fly in his studio. And, I have to say the flies he received are just as perfect as his drawings, no kidding. So, if you start with perfect flies, you get perfect drawings. To top it off, an evening's dinner with Chris reveals that he clearly has more historical fly fishing and fly tying knowledge in his head than he could ever write; what you get in the book is just the tip of the iceberg. The book's four-color printing and richness in history and fishing style recommendations make this an invaluable source for the global salmon and steelhead angler. I certainly look forward to his future three books in this four book series.

The most complete.
This book gives us the complete, world-wide and historical shrimp and spey patterns and a lot of information about the origin of the patterns. It provides us with hundreds of useful patterns that can be used not only in the U.K. and Ireland but will seduce salmon and steelhead on many rivers elsewhere. One small remark would be that the computer drawn flies look a bit to correct and are hopefully not the standard in the average fly - box.

This is the Clasic film script
This is one of about 42 Screenplays in a series. The book is full of stills. The dialog and motion I n script form. There is an introduction by Josef Von Sternberg. The movie stands on its own. However they use expressions to tell you what is in black and white in this book. The English and German versions were made separately (not dubbed)

Business Law Explained for the Intelligent Layman
I was given this book for free by someone who had used it for a college course and didn't want it. I couldn't believe the person wanted to throw it away. This book tells all the basics of business law. If you don't know anything about business law, read it. It is a good book for beginners. I know I will keep it for a reference book for a long time. I am starting my own business and I refer to it all the time. Not only does the book tells just about everything you need to know about business law, it gives actual descriptions of court cases to illustrate the points of each section. A very good buy & an excellent reference book!

There and back again in 2 + 1 dimensions....
This book is a powerful summary of where relativity and gravitational theory were at the end of 1994. From Don Page's succint look at black holes and information to John Moffat's collaborator D.C. Tatarski's defence of the consistency of NGT these works make for a wide and rich variety and consideration of Gen. Rel. and Gravity. Not for the faint-hearted or those looking for the most up-to-the minute results, the book never-the-less represents a breadth of scholarship and - especially in conjuction with the full set of reference's given for each article (Dr. Page's has 291 references alone) - an excellent place to jump in and begin deeper study of this fascinating field. Sorry, I'm not giving up my copy :-) (Note: This is NOT a book for the layman unless they have mastered advanced math and physics concepts already :-) )

Excellent history of particle physics
This book is an excellent choice if you are looking for an easy-to-read history of the development of particle physics in the twentieth century. The book almost reads like a novel. The authors lead us on a tour of the most critical breakthroughs from the discovery of the electron to that of the top quark. Each episode describes not only the physics but also provides interesting insights into the physicists who made the contributions. It is a great diary of man's attempts to discover the smallest components of matter.

The best popular science book yet written
This book has proved beyond any reasonable doubt that the telling of the story of 20th century fundamental physics is a task that should not be entrusted to physicists. No, it appears a journalist and a philosopher are not only able to bring the story to life in a way that almost all physics text books fail to do, but at the same time to never lose sight of the important scientific issues.

I thought that I understood these issues well, having been a researcher in the area myself until 1987, but I have to report that they filled embarrassingly large gaps in my knowledge, particularly in relation to experiments, including in subjects that I used to teach to undergraduates.

I would recommend this book to anyone, but most of all to those who call themselves practitioners in the subject, to remind them of how, if at all, what they do fits in to the bigger picture, and also to remind them, to quote Murray Gell Mann (who was probably quoting someone else at the time), that "the best instrument that a theoretician has is his waste paper basket". As the mathematical tangents that theoreticians have gone off on in the last twenty years get ever more bizarre and disconnected from reality, I fully expect this to be full to overflowing soon.

A great 100 year long trip comes full circle
One of the consolations of being a graduate student at a big ten university is having marvellous libraries at your disposal. I picked this one up two years ago in one of my favorite sections: general physics and biography of physicists. This book gives a clear account of how we got from the physics of the turn of the centry, when some wag suggested all that was left to do was to measure constants to the next decimal place, to today where... uh... gee, it looks like we are stuck in the same bind again! But what a century it has been. It was a treat to see how the problems of the "ultraviolet catastrophe" (quantization of light), X-rays and other radiation (atomic structure), and the non-existance of the aether (relativity) spawned whole new areas of inquiry. The interesting thing is that we have indeed come full circle... probing nature to provide support for the "Theories of Everything" will either require ingenuity and precision in measurement that defies belief, or accelerators far beyond our ability (let alone will!) to build. Meanwhile, are there any small, nagging inconsistancies lying about that will provide rich fodder for the next generation? But that is a tale for a book yet to be written. Until then, if you want the low down on 20C physics, this is an excellent place to start. The authors give especially warm and entrancing accounts of their interviews with some of the movers and shakers in the field that give a nice helping of human color to what could have been much too dry a book.

Managing Your Anxiety: Regaining Control When You Feel Stressed, Helpless, and Alone

A book for everyone suffering from anxiety
I have been troubled by anxiety for many years and have not been too optimistic about finding a book that would deal with my particular problem. Managing Your Anxiety by Christopher J. McCullough and Robert Woods Mann comes very close to dealing with it. Although initially intended for people with Agoraphobia (fear of open places), the book gives a detailed account of how to manage anxiety using journals, lists, and other methods of making you realize what goes into your anxiety. I like in particular its specificity and the non-technical way in which it explains the roots of anxiety and its effects and, especially, the ways in which it can be coped with. I have used it with continuing improvement in my condition and I can recommend it to anyone who suffers from anxiety.

The most comprehensive book for treating anxiety
The wisdom in this book is simple. Fortunately, it was one of the first I came across when my problems with anxiety began. Using this book as a guide, I have helped myself begin to recover from agoraphobia by taking care of basic physical needs that required change, such as nutrition and exercise, and through exposure work. I believe that recovery does involve healing many of our basic, but neglected, needs. While medication appears to work for some people, the change in consciousness that occurs if you really work through the agoraphobia and your fears, while at the same time practicing ways to manage the panic, cannot be shaken by relapses or regressions where medication invites the possbility of continuing ups and downs. I don't blame people for seeking it, but I don't think it's necessary. This book was the only one I found that had a solid, well-rounded treatment plan for anxiety. Thank you Dr. McCullough!

Managing Your Anxiety
This book's thorough and philosophical explanation of the many factors involved in panic and phobia disorders gave me a much deeper understanding of the roots of my own anxiety. The excersizes in self-care program were an essential tool in helping me overcome a phobia I had for many years. It is an excellent resource for anyone who is struggling with any form of anxiety, panic, or phobia disorder.
