Page Turner
This was without a doubt the best book I've ever read. I could not put this book down and read it in one day. The book is very descriptive and well written. I highly recommend this book.
Heartbreaker
I first read this book a number of years ago. I've re-read it now, about five times. It never fails to break my heart.
believebly entertaining
I have been reading loads of books on Indians and whites. Lots of them I enjoy. This one I could not put down. I ordered all of Manfred's other books - those that I could - since they are hard to get. You will not regret this book. I recommend it highly! And actually, I hate this day and age --- I would have been much happier as Judith. Carol King - not the singer - East Fallowfield, Pa.

I was spellbound with anticipation of the outcome.
I have always been interested in the old west. The various customs of the Native Americans and the ways that the minds of prior generations worked in their own times. I have always had a love of horses and this novel certainly kept my attention. This book is only one of the Buckskin Man Series. They are all excellent. They have an order in which they should be read to be most effective because of the dates. If I can remember the order they are as follows. 1. Conquering Horse. 2. Lord Grizzley 3. Riders of Judgement 4. Jack of Spades 5. Scarlet Plum I was not disappointed in one of these. Frederick Manfred also wrote under the name of Fredrica. I do however, have a few of his books that I do not like. His home was in Minnesota and the area that he writes about in all these novels is the five state area around Minnesota.

A very interesting story
This wise and loving book begins with the funeral of Frederick Manfred, the novelist. Written in lean, spare prose by his daughter, the poet Freya Manfred, it moves by a series of flashbacks through almost five decades of her keen observations of her father.
It is interesting to see that her writing style is quite different than her father's more ornamented style, although he was her mentor and writer friend.
You'll enjoy reading one of Frederick Manfred's books at the same time that you read Frederich Manfred: A Daughter Remembers. I chose to read Lord Grizzly, which some people say is the best of his many books.

The true story of Hugh Glass...and then some
I had never even heard of Hugh Glass when i picked this book up. Wow, what a life he led! If even half of it is true its an amazing tale in the spirit of Jeremiah Johnson.
What this man goes through is unbelievable and makes for a heck of a page turner. Great historical/fiction mountain man story.
The Ultimate Western
This is one particularly unique western set in a time when the Midwest was untamed; it's probably like no other western ever written. I have read maybe two-hundred westerns, but I was naive until I read Lord Grizzley.
A Great Book
Actually, this book should be about 4 1/2 stars, but I'll round up. It is a captivating book that is part history and part (probably the biggest part) fiction centered around an historic figure. I imagine old Hugh did go through very similar experiences during his time in hell. This book gives a great depiction of what life probably was like for a mountain man in the early 1800s. It reminds me of the sheer luxuries we all take for granted in every day life compared to those who lived before us. Hugh Glass is portrayed as a determined man who was about as tough as any creature on the planet could be. I imagine he was. For a glimpse of how the West was before white men poured in, what life consisted of then, and the inspirational feats of a colorful mountain man, read this book. It's hard to put down.

Totally original and spicey look at pioneers!!
If you enjoy reading about pioneer days, and char-acters that are so well described that you feel you know them, then you will love this engrossing story. I found myself thinking about this book when I wasn't reading it, a sure sign that the book was enjoyable. It is entriguing from the beginning where a lonely cowboy is looking for a place to call his own, and then when he finds a girl staying in his homestead, uninvited!! The story that unfolds is huge, with the characters growing older with the story. I hated to finish the book that was so full of the true flavor of pioneer days, hardships, big family life, incest, and lots of laughs along the way. I loved it!!

A book that tries to be a classic western, but fails.
The book takes quite a wile to get going and then never really does. The synopsis for the book itself is also incorrect. Cain, the main character, isn't exciting or interesting in the least. A vengful killer does off some of his family members but he does nothing. The book is mainly about the Wyoming - Johnson County Range war - but unfortunately the book examines a very boring part of the war itself. I DO NOT advise anyone who enjoys a good western to read this book, they will be ultimately dissappointed.
