It's hard to argue with Malik's credentials. Former UN General Assembly president, Harvard trained Malik says his book should really have been entitled "What Does Jesus Think about the University?" He consistently, and without apology, suggests there is an answer to this question even if he/we can never be sure what it is. He believes the university is the most significant shaping force in culture, and argues that both the sciences and humanities have adopted working assumptions which prevent them even from acknowledging the place of God in their theories. In the two major chapters--one on science the other on the humanities--Malik's descriptons and assessments of these assumptions are lucid, contemporary, and sane without crossing the line into polemic. I think his concern for the loss of self-awareness by scientists is particularly provocative. While his closing chapter on a specific solution to revitalizing the university through the creation of a world-wide Institute may not suit everyone, it is clearly a suggestion born out of a genuine desire to make a difference.
