I had the great privilege of being a student of Jim Magner while he taught literature at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He died in August 2000. He was unique combination of a man -- part boxer, soldier, mystic, monk, poet and professor. When I knew him, he was a vision of Walt Whitman -- tall, lanky with a full white beard. He was a fine professor and great poet, as any reader would find by flipping the pages of this book. Remember, it was written near the end of the 20th century, when most of the people of Western World were gripped by cyncism and self-importance. It was Jim Magner who saw in that world God, everywhere.
