an outrageous sports biography of the greatest ball player
you would be in awe after the first few pages of this album you cant collect anymore detail than this material my volumes cover 1932-1951 are there more volumes than this ? what is the value of these two volumes any idea i will move this thru my next generation to come unreal .....
these two books capture the miracle of Jolting Joe D
he showed up during the Great Depression, a 21 year old kid from San Francisco in 1936 and brightened our lives and moods until the World War began in "41. Returning after the war, despite a painful heel spur that he described as a spike ripping into him he played until "51 and in his quiet modest way had the love of the nation until his life went away yesterday. These volumes show us the mewspapers of the day and interviews and photos galore. A joy to behold and remember his active life. What a loss. Those of us who followed his career at the time and those born well after his retirement have good feelings. Whayt a gentleman! Try to find these books--you'll be glad you did!!!Joe, you will be missed.

are you kidding?
The DiMaggio Chronicles. Don't you wish? It's my most treasured baseball collection. And hey, I'm King Carl's cousin. You couldn't have it for million bucks. Then again, I'll sell it to you wholesale... Never!

Terrific portrayal of Joe D
Unlike the Cramer book, this book relies heavily on firsthand anecdotes offered by people who knew Dimaggio. And it pretty much covers every aspect of his adult life. I loved it, and it allowed me to get to know the Yankee Clipper pretty well without author conjecture and hyperbole.

I am a novice in doing this.
I have always been a Yankee fan. I bought this book and still have it in my collection. It was copywrited in MCMXLVI and it is near "mint" condition. It is a hard back copy. I was 22 years old when I purchased it and I am 76 years old now. The book is 54 years old.
It is very interesting as it describes his days at the sandlot baseball diamonds until his time when he joined the Yankees. He drove to Florida for spring training with Tony Lazzari and Frank Crosetti. Both Tony and Frank drove and they finally asked Joe to take the wheel and he replied "I don't drive". I was at Yankee Stadium when he came back after his heel injury in time to play the Boston Red Socks game and really helped the Yankees win the pennant. It is a very interesting book for anyone to read who is a Yankee fan and followed the life of Joe.

it is about a baseball player who tryed his best
it was o.k and it didn't put me to sleep
Darn good sports biography
Way better than you'd probably expect of a sports biography, especially from the era when this was written (1956). Good account of DiMaggio's early history and family background, very good blow-by-blow of the 56-game hitting streak. Vivid accounts of Joe's sufferings from injuries and dramatic comebacks from them. There are many direct quotes from players, including Joe -- not commentaries on events and controversies (as we'd get today), but just routine things that they said while just hanging out. The book has some quaint faults that are expectable in a sports book from that era. At times, meaningless details are mentioned as though they were important and of interest just because they pertain to baseball heroes; for example, we learn that Bill Dickey ordered tea and toast for breakfast. And sometimes the writer seems to believe that the main element of interest about an event was the question of what the newspaper writers would say ("scribes," he calls them). But, the book has an overall grace and dignity befitting its subject. Overall, worthwhile and even somewhat revealing. I first read this book as a child, and it was somewhat responsible for my becoming hooked on baseball and its history.

Dimaggio bio lacks insight.
Maury Allen didn't so much write "Where Have You Gone, Joe Dimaggio?" as he did typed it. A New York sportswriter, Allen simply pastes together rambling, unedited interviews of those who knew Joe D. best, never separating the wheat from the chaff. Subsequently, the book consists mostly of lengthy, word-for-word accounts -- some of them five pages or more -- of long-retired ballplayers. Now old men, the subjects begin talking about Dimaggio but end up meandering into their own less substantial careers and lives. The only insight Allen elicits from his reporting is that the Great Dimaggio was one of baseball's best-ever players. But that's not the true Dimaggio story. Lots of great ballplayers preceded and succeeded the Yankee Clipper. But no one has transcended the sport like Dimaggio to become an American hero and a cultural icon. He maintained a powerful and emotional stronghold on the country's consciousness for nearly 50 years after quitting the game. And that's despite his obsessive demands for privacy. Neither the interviewees nor Allen ever shed any light on why that is. Anyone wanting to know more about Dimaggio, the man and the legend, would be better advised to check out Richard Ben Cramer's forthcoming biography "Joe Dimaggio: A Hero's Life," due in September 1999. A five-page article in "Newsweek" magazine on the occasion of Dimaggio's death offered more depth and insight than Allen's 179-page book.
A real insider's view of a player with great mystique
I loved this book! From the first chapter, where Lefty Gomez is talking about pitching against Joe D when he was only a kid with the San Francisco Seals. and this "amateur" gets two doubles off him, to the parts about Marilyn Monroe, which I think everybody on earth is interested in, this book had me hooked. I couldn't help but wonder how Mr. Allen got such personal and intimate information on the courtship of Marilyn Monroe by Joe. The part about her coming home from a party sad, because it's Christmas time and it's always been a horrible time of year for her, and she opens the door to see a small Christmas tree on her table, with a card from him, and he's sitting in a chair in the corner waiting for her. I found that very touching and emotional. As a reader, it was the most intimate view I've ever had of the two of them, and I will probably always wonder how Mr. Allen was able to get stuff like that, when I KNOW DiMaggio refused to talk about her, ever. All of Joe's teammates, from Lefty Gomez and Bill Dickey to Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle told the most revealing stories about Joe and his life on the field and off the field with the Yankees. That was great reading. The clubhouse man, Pete Sheehy, told one of the funniest stories about DiMaggio when he described the day the Clipper showed him a bruise on his backside and asked Mr. Sheehy where he thought the bruise originated from. "Joe," Mr. Sheehy said, "That's from all the guys kissing your backside." What a great read!
