An American Icon.....
Annie Oakley, markswoman, famous for her horseback-riding stunts and trick-shot performances, comes to life in Sue Macy's new compelling and fascinating biography, Bull's-Eye. Born Phoebe Ann Moses, a Quaker, in the backwoods of Ohio, Annie Oakley overcame extreme childhood poverty, abuse, and work as a laborer before making the giant leap to sharpshooter and world renown entertainer. Her amazing story, so often seen in movies, Broadway shows, and television is fleshed out here, relying less on the larger-than-life, wild west myth, and more on the intimate details and little known facts about this remarkable woman's life. Ms Macy's easy to read text is told in an engaging, conversational tone, and is enhanced with actual historical photographs, posters, advertisements, and newpaper articles, as well as quotes from Annie herself, from her unpublished autobiography. With a chronology, resource guide, and author's note at the end to fill in additional details and further discussions, Bull's-Eye is perfect for youngsters 8-12, and is a unique little treasure that is sure to whet the appetite and send imaginations soaring.

Good short stories about triumph and overcoming obstacles. Not boring and certainly holds the attention. The endings leave a little to be desired. The stories end on a good feel, but never come out and tell you what happened. You're left with the impression that it ended well. My 10 year old daughter enjoyed the stories. Thumbs up on this one!

Play Ball!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from an adult's perspective. I enjoy baseball a lot, especially when it comes to women playing ball. If you're interested in learning about the AAPGBL and enjoying a trip back in time then Sue Macy's book is a good read!

A Great Book
A Whole New Ballgame by Sue Macy was a great book. It told what some of the women did during World War 2 to help out in their communities. Some women played baseball. Baseball helped raise the spirits of the town. The women made some fabulous plays and were just as good as the men who were now overseas. They were great players and I'm sorry that the league wasn't able to hold on. I definitely recommend this book to girls who like baseball or softball.

Oh, how far we've come!
Winning Ways is a history of women's athletics in the US. Reading it will make you realize how far we've come- from wearing corsets during exercise!- and yet how far we still have to go. I didn't agree with some of the author's arguments; for example, that radio disk jockeys should not have criticized a woman who was assaulted, beaten, and killed for jogging alone at night because "there was still an assumption that women should curb their athletic activity"- please! There is such a thing as common sense. However, the author did make some interesting points- for example, about women in athletics being judged for appearance, about women in aggressive sports being perceived as too "manly", etc. Winning Ways is also filled with interesting photographs and illustrations. I recommend this book to anyone interested in athletics or women's studies.

A Pretty Weak Celebration
We wanted this book as a gift for a grand daughter who is fast becoming a far better than average competitive athlete herself. As a family we have celebrated her accomplishments and thought this work would underline and reinforce the importance of what she is doing.

Unfortunately the work is a simple 32 pages of bright-color glitz with little or no substance. A few action shots that focus too often on close-up bizarre angles and "artsy" out-of-focus shots rather than meaningful athletic activity or accomplishment are accompanied by 16 quotes that fall short of being the best available by outstanding female athletes.

Those women who are athletes will find it "ho hum" and those who have aspirations and seek encouragement or recognition will need to seek elsewhere than this publication.

Being a published author myself and an ex-daily newspaper sports writer it would be my guess that putting the book together took at most a half dozen hours of layout and photo selection work coupled with a day or so of some journalism intern's leg work to find some usable quotes.

It just doesn't have anything to offer the reader or athlete.

Play like a Girl
My daughter didn't like it very much. It was a collection of photographs more than anything. And even the photographs weren't very striking. The book was missing poems or a story to go along with the pictures. It was disappointing.
