For the Adventurer Who Likes to Plan...
I found this book to be extremely helpful. It makes planning a hiking agenda easy. Great maps and detailed overviews. This book gives you the confidence to allow you to explore more of New Hampshire. No matter which trail you decide to take on...you will know what to expect. Even gives guides to "rainy day" hikes. The only drawback is that you will want to pack it with you!

Excellent story!!
I discovered this book way back in the early 80's, when I was about 13, and have read it just about every two years since. The older I've gotten, the more relavent this book has become. Carolyn's story of getting pregnant the "first time," having to get married, and her life thereafter is poignant and precise. What I've gotten from this story is that despite having to marry someone she didn't even know, their relationship grows and develops, almost hidden from Carolyn. When her husband, John, turns her to him in the hospital and says "I love you babe," both Carolyn and the reader are stunned at this confession.

If you can find a copy of this book, pick it up and read at once! It's an absorbing read, and doesn't take too long. But the words will leave a lasting impression, and you may find yourself turning to it every other year or so like I have.

One of my all time favorites!
I love this book! I first read it when I was in junior high in the 70s and it still rang true! Just because it is set in the 1950s does not mean that today's teenage girl cannot relate to it. It looks into the heart of a teenagae girsl better than any book I have ever read. I only hope that the sequel will be re-released as well, because I have always wondered what happened to Snowy, Bev, and my favorite character, Puddles.

Re-visiting with Snowy at 40
Amazing the similiarities between many of the reviewers; I was also a teen in the 70s when I first read this book, loved it so much that after checking it out numerous times from the school library I ended up (gulp...) swiping it, but also eventually lent it out to someone who never returned it. Looked in many bookstores through the years since, but could never find it. My astonished delight when surfing Amazon and seeing it had been re-released could almost be compared to what one would feel bumping into a long-lost and much-beloved sister on a strange and crowded city street. What captured me most when first reading it as a 15 year old were the familiarity of Snowy's hopes and dreams and desires. It was an eye-opener to me that teens in the 50s (ancient history to me then - that's when my MOTHER was in high school) were struggling with the same things. Re-reading it at 40, I could still identify with all those things, but noticed - and wondered about - others I had not as a younger reader - namely the moments when Snowy made particular life-determining decisions and why. When Dudley, who has NEVER gone steady with anyone, and who Snowy has deep affection for and more in common with than any other guy in the book, finally asks her to be his girl, her only thoughts are: "which might disturb Tom more more, going steady, or keeping a stable of boyfriends." She doesn't even see Dudley for the person he is, because of her obsession with Tom. Dudley and Snowy could have fit like hand and glove, but HE, although an academic whiz and very popular guy, was not a sport hero. The best thing about The Cheerleader is that it makes you (re-)evaluate your priorities, about WHY you choose for WHAT you choose, which is a good exercise for anyone in any day and age. I am trying to find the sequel (another reviewer asked for the title - it's called "Snowy", by the way), but have had no success yet via numerous booksellers (including second hand) on the net. These have also obviously been snapped up and are being hoarded. Is it not a good idea - author, publisher - to re-release this one as well?? Lastly, are you out there Kathy Tucker? I've searched through all kind of internet search engines with no luck, but this could well be the one place we could finally find each other again.

I'm So Glad This Book Has Been Re-Released
I read this book while babysitting in Junior High and I've always remembered it. I used to be able to borrow it from the library when it became out of print. The library has now lost it. I was so thrilled to read on Amazon.Com that it was being re-released. I ordered it immediately and received it right away. I'm over half through when I just received it yesterday! This is a must read. You will always remember the vivid descriptions of Snowy and her friends. Just like you were one of the gang.

Doesn't compare to The Cheerleader
I first read The Cheerleader as a teenager and it was one of my all-time favorite books, one to be cherished. I wanted the story to go on and on so I was very happy when I found out 7 years after its publication about Snowy, the sequel. I hunted down a copy and read it in one night. After The Cheerleader, I found Snowy to be a let-down. The characters as adults weren't endearing. I couldn't relate to them at all. The life path that Snowy took seemed to totally conflict with the forces that shaped her teen-age years. Snowy develops an illness that seems totally out of character for her. It seemed to pop up out of nowhere. I did like the fact that the author brought some closure to Tom's and Snowy's relationship. I just wish it had happened in a different way.

Snowy
This book was wonderful. I read it in a single evening during my pregnancy. Snowy is a continuation of the book "The Cheerleader". I first read The Cheerleader when I was a teenager (38 now). I always wondered what had happened to Snowy and her friends. Imagine my pleasure when I located a copy of Snowy! The Author immediately took me back into the lives of Snowy, Tom, Puddles, Bev and the rest of the gang.....how their lives parted, changed and blended into adults and occasionally got back together again. The book starts right after High School and progresses with Snowy's life for 30 years. I felt satisfied after reading it knowing what had happened to everyone. Thank you Ruth Doan MacDougall.

"Snowy"
I have just finished reading the novel "Snowy" By Ruth Doan MacDougall. I have to say that I enjoyed the book very much. It follows Henrieatta Snow "Snowy",Who leaves her Parents home in small town Massachusetts. Leaving behind her best friends Bev(who she is not speaking to,Because of her boyfriend Tom)and Puddles, But most importantly her Ex-boyfriend Tom. Snowy goes to college and meets her roomate Harriet. Harriet helps mold Snowy into a Independent woman. They face many "adventures" together that Snowy wouldn't have experianced on her own. Snowy eventually begins to work in her College's work study program forcing her to move to Boston. There she becomes the Woman that she will eventually turn into. In Boston Snowy reunites with Puddles and an unexpected friend from her past.Snowy still struggles with the fallout from her break up with Tom,but eventually she comes to a peace and acceptance within herself. She is a full fledged "career girl" Ruth Doan MacDougall did exceptionally well at showing the dynamics of Snowy's life. I'm not going to reveal the end..It's something you have to read for yourself to fully appreciate.

A dreary barren drag.
The players in this little novel are so inwardly turned, and tentative, that you want to shake them. It sounds like the main characters have traveled and done interesting things but these events are so lightly touched upon that you get the barest taste. The author shows herself capable of realistic conversation, situations and settings but most often leaves not only the reader as an outsider but the characters as observers of their own lives also. The cover blurb proclaims "Shattering . . . three times as moving as the end of 'Love Story'." Now, I know the author likely did NOT write that blurb, but the printers have really asked for it; 'moving'? no; numbing, sad, and tragic. Was there a moral we were supposed to get about drinking and driving? OK. I got it. But it begs the question; 'Why?' The punchline/conclusion had no link to the entire story line. The reactions of the players were skewed to provide shock to the reader at the expense of cohesion.
