If you're headed to keet seel this is not the book for you
I agree with the editorial (Kirkus) reviewer; which you ought to read and pay attention to before buying. This is strictly one man's impressions of what the Colorado Plateau means to him. It is not authoritative as to the ruin's archeology or anthropology. It could better be classed as poetry.

a reflection, not a travel brochure
One of my favorite books about one of my favorite destinations. This is a collection of brief essays that is the perfect companion for a trip to the Four Corners area and the abounding ruins and sites of the Anazasi. Its not a book detailing where to go and how to get the most for your tourist dollar. Rather its a musing reflection on what its like to visit these places from the perspective of a 21st century traveler. These writings draw our attention to the feelings evoked by the experience of wandering among the reminders of another people, another culture, another cosmology and way of understanding what life is about. I have been to Keet Seel. Its a demanding walk. I appreciated having the opportunity to travel back there with someone who provided words to some of the feelings I experienced at the time. A subtext of these writings is the idea of the sacred in a postmodern world that has chased that concept into small corners of carefully bounded scholarship. The author discovers it abounding all around us and that we are desperate to recover some sense of it for ourselves. The trip to Keet Seel and the other destinations is a rediscovery of its significance and meaning for human existence.

Reaching Keet Seel is an incredible collection of essays.
I beg to differ with the reviewer from Kirkus associates. The guy's a pompous windbag and if he actually read the whole book, I doubt seriously if he understands what he read. The book is not and does not profess to be a work of anthropological science. It is a look into one man's reactions to historical places which cannot be described, but have to be experienced to feel their effects. Again and again, Reg Saner captured these effects, along with his "show me" quest, poetically with a mastery of language seldom seen anywhere. The reviewer claimed that the writing style hurt his teeth. I suggest he sees a dentist, for the writing is great. Like the places they describe, the essays need be experienced for their full effect. I won't do them the dishonor of inadequate description here. The book is an informative, thought-provoking read. As one who has been researching the Anasazi, Pueblo, and Hopi for some time, I place this book near the top of my favorites list of the last 25 books I've read on the subject. The essay, "Spirit Root" should win an award of some sort. It's fabulous. To anyone reading my review, I say get the book. To the reviewer who was so shallow, wishy-washy and unkind, I say get a life.

This is a good book...
But you need to have a few comercial plug-ins and this means spend money, instead of this you can learn many tricks other people learn with experience and time. I really don't know if the book isn't good enoght or 3D Studio is very incomplete, filling the holes with expensive IPAS.

3d Studio &Hollywood Gaming Effects
First of all, I want to say that I'm from Sweden, so please be indulgence with my language. I've read the magnificant book of 3d Studio & Hollywood Gaming Effects. I used both 3d Studio and 3D max for the tutorials, and I was quite impressed. The book is based on examples and tutorials, made by pros'. The examples in the book are very detailed, and are understandble, even for an amateur like me. And the best thing is that, if you dont understand what they're talking about, just put in the CD-Rom (that comes with the book) find the chapter for the example, and run it. There you have it, step by step, all the exaples in the book on the CD-Rom are explained on the CD-Rom too. A book for both amateurs and proffesionals, that increase the flexibilaty you need to become a graphic artist. And even if you're using 3d Max, the examples in the book - and on the CD-Rom - works properly. Since Max and Studio are based on the same system. The examples in the books are well illustrated, and the layout makes it very easy to find and read. You learn new things every time you browse through the book. And just by watching the exapmles on the CD-Rom, you can load a project - and go through it - see for your self how it's build. And in that way learn some useful hints & tricks. A low cost educational book, that you can get useful hints & tricks from, that you cant get from anywhere else. As I said, my English is bad. I sometimes can't find a way to express my feelings in words. But it is a good book. I rated the book with a 9. Now that, is self explained. Happy rendering, Your Friend In The Jungle Of 3D.

3D Effects For The Experts By The Experts
When I first picked this book up I was expecting it to be another book on teaching the beginner how to do simple effects. I could never have been so wrong. Starting at an advanced level, the book assumes you not only have lots of experience with 3D Studio, but some additional software tools as well. Then, it shows you, in detail, how to create certain effects, all of which can be easily adapted to your scenes. Some of the effects include overlaying your animation with video so that it 'fits' together, or extended use of 'Bones Pro' and 'MetaBall Modelers'(which are plug-ins for 3D Studio) to create organic models.

For beginners, I recommend "3D Studio Special Effects/Book and Cd Rom" while this book is more for users with a solid grip on 3D Studio.

only half succeeds
At its very best, nature writing lets us experience vicariously an environment that we're unlikely to ever encounter ourselves and, simultaneously, sets us to thinking about that environment in new or unusual ways. David Rains Wallace succeeds only in the first of these tasks.

Bulow Hammock is a wooded swampland in eastern Florida, around Daytona. Wallace, whose grandmother lived in nearby Ormond-by-the-Sea, has been visiting it since he was a child. In this book he writes, often compellingly about what he has observed there and he relates his own experiences to those of the great naturalist John James Audubon, who seems to have hated the place, and those of William Bartram, whose 1701 book, , was apparently influential in the development of Romanticism. So far, so good.

But, in addition, Wallace throughout tries to prove a rather dubious premise : that the human brain and the hammock have many similarities :

I wondered if I might explore the hammock not only as a home of wild plants and animals but as a connection to my wayward brain. The brain is like forests in being diverse and multilayered. I'd even felt in the western mountains that the old-growth forests might have a kind of consciousness arising from complexity. Like my brain, the hammock was structured hierarchically, with newer, more complex things growing from older ones. Most mysteriously, brain and hammock shared a propensity for mimesis, for producing similarities between different things.

This whole train of thought, which starts out merely silly, eventually trails off into pure blather. The desire of environmentalists and their allies to anthropomorphize nature is perfectly understandable--the more human that nature is made to appear the more likely we are to protect it. But here's one thing we can all be certain of, the trees of Bulow Hammock do not have a consciousness; they don't actually realize that they are a forest. Nature is fascinating enough without our overreaching to draw human connections which simply do not exist.

These rather dubious speculations on Wallace's part end up detracting from the book, rather than adding to it. I'd still recommend it for the beauty and wit of his observations, but it fails rather spectacularly in the reach for broader themes.
