Best cookbook I've ever read,a cookbook with REAL food!
A cookbook with a heart. Great recipies with normal ingredients! No feeling of being deprived with these recipies, and you still lose weight.

Tasty, Healthy and Easy to Prepare Comfort Food-Pure Delight
I just received my copy of 'Make A Joyful Table' and I am already taking notes on the recipes I want to try. Neither myself or my family have ever been disappointed in one of JoAnna's recipes and that includes 2 picky eaters...my husband & my 6yo son. And I own nearly all her cookbooks. All of her recipes are suitable for those who are wanting to regain & maintain good health...they are low in fat but high in flavor and suitable for diabetics but yet sweet and satisfying. They aren't gourmet and they call for ingredients that you can find in your local grocery store no matter where you live. Just delightful comforting old fashion (but easily) prepared common folk dishes that you can savor & enjoy without any guilt or regret!

Well Written and Uplifting
In many of JoAnna's previous books, she has shared some of her philosophy of life and healthy living. This book expands upon that aspect of her writing career. It is not a cookbook; the recipes are for living.

The book is divided into short segments, centering upon a theme. Some examples are counting your blessings, seeing yourself as you are, etc. It is written to especially address the self-esteem needs of someone who has battled weight-related problems. It is motivational and very comforting at the same time.

As I was reading it, I was trying to describe to myself exactly what type of feeling it evoked in me. I finally decided it must be like the quilting bee of old, when sage individuals share their encouragement, wisdom and insights, based upon many years of living and struggling. JoAnna would not claim to be a psychologist, yet in a very down-to-earth manner she relates to all of us at the point we are now. I was also impressed with later sections where she plainly states that we all need to assume responsibility for our actions and not adopt a vitcim mentality.

The book is well written and time was taken to produce a quality product. On first reading, it did not appear to have a single incorrectly spelled word. I commend JoAnna and her publisher on this. I would highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with weight issues or life's problems in general.

What a great cookbook. I have them ALL!!!
First let me say that I am an avid fan of JoAnna Lund. She has made it so much easier to have a healthier lifestyle by giving us such great cookbooks. Her recipes are easy to make, taste great, and are low fat, low/no sugar, and are definitely family pleasers.

My husband loves these recipes too. In fact, we like her recipes so much that I have personally purchased all of her cookbooks.

Whether you just want to eat healhier, or need to watch your fat or sugar intake you can use ALL of these recipes. Every single recipe has the nutritional value, Healthy Exchanges breakdown (JoAnna's plan), and Diabetic Exchanges. If you are following the Weight Watchers plan, you will be able to convert each recipe into points without a problem.

This cookbook shows just how easy it is to eat REAL FOOD not rabbit food to be healthy. Recipes work well too for those wanting to drop a few pounds. JoAnna's Healthy Exchange program is explained in the front of the book.

I know if you try just one of her books, you will be hooked and want more.

A cookbook to live by!
A friend loaned me her copy of this book and within a day I knew I had to have my own. This book changed mine and my husband's life - literally. Our cholesterol levels were terrible and we had to do something. Within three months of cooking with Healthy Exchanges, both our cholesterol levels have dropped significantly as well as our weight. Mrs. Lund's easy to read, easy to make and delicious to eat recipes have made new people out of us. So many recipe books require fancy gadgets and unheard of ingredients, but Mrs. Lund's recipes are down-to-earth made with readily accessible ingredients and they taste so good that you can hardly believe they are low-fat and sugar-free. The recipes are simple and fast to fix which is important to a full-time working woman like myself. I find myself making up recipes ahead as most of her recipes keep well in the refrigerator and freeze well, also. This book runs the gamut from soups, salads, main dishes, sides dishes, desserts and snacks. I highly recommend it to anyone needing to lose weight, lower their cholesterol and blood sugar levels or they just want a change of pace in their eating habits. It is going to take me awhile to get through all those recipes but I find myself looking at this book daily to see what I am going to make next. You can actually eat desserts and what yummy desserts they are, too! After awhile, it does become a way of life - eating the Healthy Exchanges way!

for the picky teenagers.. lol
My mother bought this book a long while back, when I still lived at home. My brother and I both turned our noses up to most vegetables, among other things, so we generally ate alot of fast foods and convenience-type foods from the grocery.

Now that I am married and out of my mother's house, I've been experimenting with many different foods and cooking constantly. I recently called my mother to have her email me a recipe from this book that I had remembered her fixing when she first bought it. "Mexicalli Pie" :-D My mother was shocked that I actually remembered this, and my husband really enjoyed it when I made it.

I've since borrowed this book and have yet to fix anything that my husband and I didnt thoroughly enjoy.. and he was a more picky eater than both my brother AND myself! ;) I DEFINATELY reccomend this book for... well, anyone! Meals that actually TASTE GOOD, and can fool even us finicky eaters into eating healthy!

put gout and arthritis away.... eat without the wory
Arthritis affects millions of people every day, in the form of gout, osteoarthritis, and the most common form known as rheumatoid arthritis. JoAnna M. Lund has written a series of "Healthy Exchanges" of which one is The Arthritis healthy Exchange Cookbook published Perigee Book a division of Berkley Publishing Group. The book is not fancy in any way, it is printed on plain paper with a compact typestyle. This book is designed for people with arthritis after all, not vision problems. Though some recipes go onto two pages, not of them requirre the cook to turn the page to finish the recipe.

Each recipe not only offers the nutritional information, but also the healthy exchange of the food groups. There are several tips, suggestions and ideas on many of the recipes, and the ingredients are pretty readily availble in most regular grocery stores.

Recipes include: Creamy Vegetable Chowder; Skillet Green Beans; BBQ Corn & Tomato Saute; Smorgasbord Pea Salad; Seashell Tuna Salad; Honey Mustard Chicken Pasta Salad; Deliteful Mandarin Orange Salad; Three Cheese Strata; Tuscan White Bean Pizza; Cinque Terre Shrimp Pasta; Chicken & Dumplings; Mexican Chicken Scallop; Fancy Fiesta Skillet; Meat Squares with Creamed Potato Topping; Florentine Meatloaf; Lemon Mousse; Mocha Crunch Pudding; New Orleans Bread Pudding; Rhubarb-Banana Cream Pie;Tomato Carrot Muffins and Spiced Mocha Mix.

Overall rating: 3.5 pots of out 5.

Excellent
This is an excellent healthy cookbook, especially for arthritis and diabetic people. I have also heard this lady speak, and she is a dynamic motivator.

A good, simple start to Low Fat cooking!!
I really like this book and would recommend it to anyone who is especially just starting to eat a low fat/low sugar diet.
It may not be "gourmet" food, but it is great tasting, easy to prepare food...and you can find all the ingredients in your local markets.

One of the best parts of the book, believe it or not, is the information in the beginning pages on how to substitute low fat ingredients for fattening ones! You probably would never think the low fat substitutes could taste so good but THEY DO!!!

Try the book, you won't be disappointed.

very good recipies
I have tryed several recipies from this book, all were very good. The cherry pie filling is especially good! Its hard to find deserts to make that my husband can eat that taste so good.

My husband loves everything I've cooked from this book!
The recipes are for "normal" food (as opposed to the kind of cookbooks that offer extreme ingredients that you must move to Manhattan to aquire!). He has loved every single thing I've prepared using recipes in this book. Lots of variety, great nutritional info, and easy preparation. He's a Type I diabetic, and has been for over 40 years. Before I started cooking for him when we married 4 years ago, he had no idea food that's good for him could be GOOD, too! And, this cookbook was one of the first I used to prepare new recipes for him that didn't require modifications to keep his blood glucose in control.

Simple, fairly tasty, low-fat dishes
I'm using this cookbook to help me learn how to "low-fat-ize" my cooking. I like that Lund uses everyday ingredients and tells you up front what you need to keep on hand to cook from her book on short notice. The recipes are pretty easy to make and, while they'll never be four-star fare, are adequate for Tuesday night meals for the family.

I do have one quibble: Most of the recipes that use ground beef call for only 8 ounces. This usually requires that I saw a pound block of hamburger in half, which I find really annoying. It's enough to make me make double batches and freeze the rest.

Simple to Prepare and Oh How Tasty The Results!
I bought this book a few years ago after seeing Joanna demonstrate some of the recipes on a shopping network. I was impressed with the simplicity of the recipes and the author's promise that every ingredient could be found in her small town supermarket. To say that I haven't been disappointed is an understatement. This is the book I reach for when I need something quick to prepare but tasty nevertheless. I have grown my collection of Joanna Lund books to eight, and my experience with this first volume is the primary reason for the expansion.

Give this book a try. Your family will be pleased and so will you.

The "classic" Joanna Lund cookbook.
I have lost 82 pounds with Joanna Lund's recipes. I have five of her cookbooks and this is my favorite. There are some excellent, real food recipes in this book that my whole family loves. She makes it easy too; the ingredients are easy to find in your store and the meals are made in minutes. Try it, you won't be disappointed!!

Dessert Every Night
I'm the author of this book and it's a personal favorite of mine. I note that babysis56 writes that we did not respond to her messages. But, we've tried to contact babysis56@aol to see if we could answer her questions, and we've never gotten a response. I try my best to respond to anyone who contacts me in a timely manner.

Not only did the Tooth Fairy bless me with a sweet tooth - she gave me a whole mouth full! And I share my favorite "common folk" healthy desserts in this collection. If you love the types of desserts that grandma made for you when you were young - but you need healthier (less fats & sugars) versions - then I think you will love this book!

These recipes are NOT healthy
I was so disappointed when I received this book. The title is so misleading. These recipes are NOT a healthy way to eat. Too much processed and can foods are used here. (hot dogs, processed cheese, Yuck) Where did this author get the idea that these recipes are a healthy way for children or anyone for that matter to eat?? Goodness, no wonder why America is so overweight. There is a star rating on reviews, it truly doesn't even deserve the one star.

Outstanding Book!!!
I love this book for every reason A Reader from Virginia doesen't!!! I wanted a book that was "real world" for my family. We don't have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen and I don't have a large selection to choose from at my small-town grocery store. I want to teach my kids to eat healhier and I'm attending weekly weight loss meetings. This book fits all our needs and then some!!! Someone at class mentioned that JoAnna Lund's books fit in perfect when counting points, so I purchased this book and have been cooking and eating happily ever since. My kids especially love Josh's Potato Ham Bake and Grandma's Special Spaghetti. I've been so pleased with this book that I've purchsed several more of her cookbooks. I'm glad that someone finally created a book for those of us who want to eat healthier but who don't want to spend tons of time in the kitchen and loads of money at the store.

I've lost 65+ lbs eating JoAnna Lund's recipes!
Let me start by saying that I'm a writer who has helped JoAnna on many of her cookbooks--but since I don't share in her royalties, I think it's fair for me to comment on how using her recipes has changed my life. I love the fact that JoAnna creates dishes that are quick to prepare and still taste really good. This is common sense cuisine--comfort food that is healthy enough for dieters, diabetics, heart patients, and just about anyone else! If you're a busy parent with kids to feed, or an overworked single who'd love to fill your fridge with tasty leftovers--this, and JoAnna's other books, will delight you. Yes, she uses healthy convenience foods--don't most of us? But she's tested and found the best-tasting ones. (For instance, she uses reduced-fat shredded cheese in her recipes, not fat-free, because fat-free doesn't melt or taste right.) My favorite dishes from this book include Grande Meatloaf with Potato Stuffing and Chicken Pot Pie Chowder, but you're sure to find your own must-haves. And yes, I've lost more than 65 pounds eating well with JoAnna. Here's something to think about: a year from now, you'll wish you had started today!
