one of the most wonderful books i ever read
helen luke is dead now but i wish she wasn't. this
is the best book i ever found about dante. if dante's
comedy seems a mystery to you, if it seems hard to
reach, or if it seems like it has nothing to say to us
now, you need this book. helen luke used dante's poetry
to write a magnificent jungian deconstruction of growth
and love. it makes everything simple. it is magnificent.
i was interested to see that she liked dorothy sayers'
translations (of all the dante translations that there
are) the best. if you have this book, you don't need
any other growth book, you don't need any other literary
analysis of the comedy. she knew dante very well.

A wonderful guide for the soul's journey
This marvellous book opens up Danteland for the contemporary reader. Helen Luke's masterful guidance on the paths of Dante's three-tiered cosmos not only helps us to reenter and relish the Divine Comedy - the towering literary achievement of the medieval imagination - but to use it to enter deeper levels of reality through meditation and active imagination. I have based deeply moving group meditations on this, along the lines of those decribed in my own book "Dreamgates", and we have found that Dante's gates can actually take us into imaginal realms that people appear to inhabit after physical death. As the life dreamer she was, Helen Luke reminds us of the way the radiant guide keeps calling the seeker through dreams, which are so often ignored or forgotten until the BIG moment of spiritual trial and eventual initiation. I would recommend using the middle section of the book in tandem with W.S.Merwin's excellent recent translation of the "Purgatorio", which is more readable than the older versions quoted by Ms. Luke.

The most memorable book I've read in the last 3 years
The moment I saw the references to Charles Williams and Dorothy L. Sayers I was hooked. Culturely familiar with, but never having studied, Dante's poem, I had always understood it as an allegory of life after death. Wrong! The intersections between Dante's journey as portrayed by Helen Luke and portions of my spiritual journey were intense, meaningful, detailed -- and totally unexpected. The reality of the passage through Hell and Purgatory in this life points to the hope of a portion of the feast to come also in this life. It is not an easy read, but I found myself unable to put it down -- except when the power of a passage would so resonate in me I had to pause to mark it and reflect on it.

Helen M. Luke has a unique voice in psychology.
Helen M. Luke's clarity of mind permeates every word in this extraordinary book. Her insight into Jungian thought and her own interpretation of Jung's ideas give us a book which is one of a kind. The chapter on Orual especially interested me. The author explains our desire and need to be close to other women and how this can be a danger and a blessing. I have read some paragraphs over and over. This is the kind of book you keep and hopefully give copies to your friends.

A companion guide to individuation
If you find Jung's thoughts on individuation compelling, you will probably love this book. Having embraced the path of individuation for her own life, Helen certainly makes a substantial contribution to those who are on a similar path. It is a beautifully written book that is intelligent, thought-provoking and compassionate. It provides invaluable insights and I find myself returning to this book regularly to re-read parts of it. Helen gives her own unique perspective in applying Jung's ideas to the everyday struggles faced by us all, particularly the challenges faced by those who seek greater consciousness. After reading this book, I felt an overwhelming gratitude to Helen: her rich humanity penetrates her words and she provides an inspiring example of a person who embraced a full and courageous life.

Profound, thoughtful, and challenging.
For anyone who is interested in symbolism, cultural criticism, or personal growth, this book is a challenging must-read. So many new ideas come to me in each chapter, I often find myself re-reading the chapter I just finished before moving on the the next so that I may savor these thoughts and let give them ample opportunity to work their way into my conscious daily life. Luke discusses various topics such as the importance of suffering in our lives, the symbolism of the marriage vow, and the dangers faced in our culture due to the fact that we have subverted the symbolism of money as a means of exchange, and turned money itself into an end. A wonderful introduction to the writing and thought of the late Helen Luke

For All Ages and for All Time
Like her former partner Robert A. Johnson, Helen Luke is a master of rendering the psychological meanings in great literature understandable and relevant to all people wishing to gain a deeper level of understanding about the growtn of the human soul. Having plumbed the depths of her own psycho-spiritual aging process(Such Stuff As Dreams are Made On), Ms. Luke has created a work fusing literary scholarship and personal experience into a guide for all of us to follow towards the inevitable. When the time comes for me to plant my oar (read her interpretation of The Odyssey)and turn towards the life of prayer, song and storytelling I will be eternally grateful to have had this wonderful Wise Woman as my guide. Deserving of a wide readership.

The Story of a Life Well Lived
Recently in an interview with Charlie Rose Meryl Streep spoke of women needing a dream that portrayed them as powerful, particularly as they age. Helen Luke's autobiography is just such a dream. It is a carefully woven tapestry of her dreams, her thoughts, her readings (the wide range of her reading & interests included Lord Of the Rings by Tolkien, Dante, T.S. Eliot, C.K. Williams,& Larry Dossey's Shamanic books), and the encounters that she had in her life (which included Robert Johnson, Carl Jung, Dr. Meiers, Toni Sussman,Dr. Kunkel). The patterns of this tapestry speak to us of a life that followed the Way of individuation, as she refers to it in the autobiography. What most impressed me was the way in which she lived the path, risks and all, that Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell taught, despite her Christian Scientist upbringing. This straightforward autobiography & her journals model The Way. Her courage to leave her mother behind while she was dying in order to follow her "dreams" was inspirational. Her discussion in her diary entry about C.K.Williams work Descent Into Hell (which she refers to frequently, reminding me of how good a book it was) and it's demonstration that "a 'daughter's gift to an injured mother' through language, even many years after a mother's death, may be valid" fed many beliefs that I have had about how healing can occur and ones role in it. The book read like a road map to a fulfilled life, well marked by the signposts of the numinousities, synchronicities, and struggles encountered by a thoughtful individual. It is hard to put down, I read through it almost at once, and will be studying and thinking about the lessons it holds for a long time. I am quite confident that most men and women will not regret studying this book.
