No Excuse: Seven Principals of Low Income Schools Who Set the Standard for High Achievement

Carter scores one for the Real World
Its title aside, this is a book about children, an empirical treatment contra the entrenched, racially tinged "Poor Kids Can't Learn" bias. What makes these success stories more than just a "position paper" for policymakers is the human face Carter puts on seven school principals who, far from being "out of touch" with students, go to great lengths to ensure their radical accessibility. Carter provides a counterexample for everyone who believes that poor, minority students should be relegated to the Dumpster of the tired, spendthrifty DOE/AFT Leviathan. And he shows us that an intellectual but straightforward, sympathetic but demanding approach to teaching can yield not merely average, but outstanding results. Like the grass that emerges green from cracked and dirty concrete, the principals Carter studies have achieved more with hope, faith and confidence in their charges than most "well-off" schools have with mere money. A well done book, good details
I enjoyed reading through this book, although it is as much a coffee table book as anything, it did a good job of showing SC country plantations.

Basic Nutrition
I just finished this book a few days ago, so I can't give a testimonial saying I lost weight. But I feel better. I'm not considered overweight (although I could lose 10 lbs, so we'll see), but I ate way too much sugar. This book provides sound nutrition advice--cut out refined sugar, eat whole grain foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean meat--and cut down on saturated fat. It also helps you think twice before reaching for that cookie in a meeting. Most importantly, the book EXPLAINS WHY it's important to eat whole grains vs. enriched white bread and to cut out the sugar.

For those of you experiencing dizziness? Perhaps you're consuming too much Aspartame. I've experienced headaches the last few days because I didn't used to have diet sodas or other foods containing Aspartame--I am now cutting that out too. Use common sense: aspartame is a chemical, so it's probably not good for you, so cut it out! And exercise is good for you, so excercise-- even though the authors say you can lose weight without it (although they still recommend that you do exercise). I truly can't imagine anyone having side effects from this way of eating-- it's basic nutrition. So you can't have carrots, corn or white potatos-- who cares? You can get those particular vitamins elsewhere--there are plenty of other veggies out there.

I'm a believer! !
At age 48 and after three years on hormone replacement therapy and gaining about 27 pounds during that time, I was getting desperate. I had tried everything that had always worked for me before to lose a few pounds. But, since my metabolism had changed so much, nothing worked. I had started a new exercise program in March that included walking three miles a day five days a week and lifting weights twice a week. I was building muscle and feeling great, except for the extra weight. One night while getting dinner, the CBS national news had a segment on Sugar Busters. I stopped what I was doing and listened. After thinking about it over night, I checked it out on Amazon.com and read the reviews. Next day I purchased the book and read it cover to cover. The book was written in a very understandable, no nonsense way. I now knew why my low-fat, high carbohyrate diet was preventing me from losing weight. I started the program on July 27 and lost 3 pounds the first week. The foods I chose were delicious and I never felt hungry or like I was being deprived. For someone who could not lose even one pound this was remarkable. Well it has now been 17 weeks and I am 19 pounds lighter and back into jeans I haven't be able to wear in a long time. Friends and family are starting to notice which makes me feel good. My muscles are becoming even more defined because I have continued the excerise program as well. I know this weight loss isn't as great as some of the other success stories I have read, but to me it's fantastic. I have about 8 more pounds to get back to where I was three years ago and hope to get down a little lower than that to improve my BMI (Body Mass Index). I don't know where I will level off, but I know I'll be able to stay there from now on. I could never have done it without Sugar Busters and want to say Thank You to the authors. You've changed my life.

The Easiest and Most Successful Diet I Have Ever Been On
I read all 169 reviews of SUGAR BUSTERS that were in place here shortly after the first of February. The vast majority were very favorable. I then purchased the book.

It is now March 6th, and I have lost 15 pounds! Of course, my weight loss has slowed during the last week, and I expect that it will go more slowly after the initial fast success. But since SUGAR BUSTERS is such an easy food plan to stay on, I am confident that I will continue to lose at whatever rate is right for me until I hit a weight that works for me. I am not bewitched by numbers on the scale and do not have a specified "goal weight" that I am trying to attain. If I end up at 150, that will be fine with me. I hit 200 at my heaviest (the end of last year).

I was not a fat kid, but I have struggled with inexorable weight gain since the birth of my first child 23 years ago, and I typically couldn't stay on a diet for even one whole day. After each pregnancy, I was left worse off than before.

My appetite was limitless; I snacked a lot on fats and carbs., and I drank Pepsi all afternoon and evening as well as at dinner. I never seemed to get really full at meals and would take second helpings most of the time, and even thirds. I ate when I was sad, and I ate when I was happy. I spent a lot of time thinking about food.

Now, I can hardly believe it, but I get full with food still left on my plate, and I quit eating voluntarily! I feel the urge to snack between meals only very rarely, now. I used to LOVE potatoes and have fixed and eaten them in so many ways; mashed potatoes with butter and cream mashed in were one of my favorite "comfort foods". Now, I have not eaten potatoes in any form for a month, and guess what? I am getting along just fine without them. I am getting along just fine without the Pepsi, too. I have had no "sugary" foods for that whole time, too, except for some slightly sweet salad dressings on salads. And I am doing GREAT without them!

My doctor had finally put me on blood pressure and cholestoral meds. last fall. He said if I would lose 20 pounds, my blood pressure might well go back down to normal the way it was before I gained all the weight. At the time, that seemed a far-fetched possiblity for me. After a few more weeks, I intend to go back to the doctor and see how my blood fats and pressure are. Perhaps I will be able to get back off of the meds. at some point after I have lost some more, perhaps not. Some who have followed SUGAR BUSTERS have reported that they have experienced that happy result.

I had tried Weight Watchers once, but thought the meetings were just dumb time wasters, and the rules that went with that program turned me off completely. The Atkins Diet was too rigid, even strictly limiting a lot of fruits and vegetables.

To say I am pleased with SUGAR BUSTERS is a huge understatement! This is the one and only diet I have ever been successful with, and it is so easy compared to other diets I am familiar with, that I believe I can stay on it for life. No weighing, measuring, counting, writing foods down in notebooks; just avoid certain "high-glycemic" foods to the greatest extent that you can.

My mood is evener, now, also. I am more cheerful and have a sense of well-being that is historically rather foreign to me. I don't worry and fret about problems as I did before. I would never have thought that refined carbs. were affecting both my mood and my appetite so profoundly.

I am now drinking water in place of the Pepsi and eating fruits and vegetables in place of the refined carbs, and I am quite proud of myself. One tip: whole wheat pitas and tortillas are a very good replacement for verboten white bread for sandwhiches. I enjoy them very much when I feel the need for a sandwhich.

Along with SUGAR BUSTERS, get EAT YOURSELF SLIM by Montignac. The plan is the same, and the Montignac book is a bit more informative, IMO. Also, do a search on the WEB for more lists of low-glycemic foods you can eat and high-glycemic foods you should avoid. There are a few inconsistencies in the lists from one to another so you do need to use some of your own judgement about okay foods: example, some nix pasta and some say certain pastas are acceptable in moderation.

I recommend both books above, unreservedly. This is the BEST food plan I have ever been on! Invest in the books and see for yourself!

BUY IT, because there is no any other choice...
This is not a bad book, I could have given it 5 stars. But this book has many flaws:

(1) This book is basically research results done by the authors. There are many things not clearly described (Remeber, this is a book, not an academic paper). I have to figure out many things by myself and I am not a novice in CDMA....

(2) The english is not very easy to understand, maybe the author should have taken some writing class.

(3) There are many errors in the numbering of the figure captions.

But generally, this is a book that you need if you want to learn more about CDMA system design. However I think this book can be improved much more than it is now.

It rocks!
I laughed, I cried, I hurled electrons. But seriously, this is an outstanding in-depth treatment of CMOS RF. It's not to be taken lightly; don't try to read this without having some undergrad circuits (and preferably RF) classes.
