roshi lives on
I studied with Maezumi Roshi from the late Sixties through the Seventies. Reading this book, I felt his presence. His language, inflections, and idiom shine through unhampered; this is a model of editorial sensitivity to the actual voice of a great teacher, and conveys his teaching beautifully.

An excellent addition to the Zen Cannon
This work is among those honorable books on Zen Buddhism which try to capture the "living" word of a Zen teacher. Though this is ultimately impossible, the attempt here is no less than inspiring, and if it were ever to be done, this would be very close.

This is one of the first books where the awkwardness of the language actually makes it better. One gets a sense of the teachers persona and personal voice. From a teaching point of view, it also reminds us how the unpolished quality of a thing can make it even more beautiful.

Lastly, perhaps this may seem trivial, its nice compact size makes it an excellent companion for any wandering traveller looking for pocketsize inspiration. Sometimes it is difficult to bring along the 400 page Heikiganroku on a long trip. This however, offers an endless wealth of wisdom which can fit in most any pocket.

Many thanks to the publisher, and to Amazon for allowing an obcure but important work like this to be offered. Maezumi's teaching resounds.

Excellent Manual for Students Taking the Precepts!
Well written and informative! Excellent for Zen student preparing for their "Jukai" vows and cermony.

A timely book that will allow the reader be touched
I read this book prior to taking the buddhist precepts and was deeply moved by John Daido Loori's understanding and commitment to the precepts. These issues, morals and ethics are issues that will not go away as the world tries to justify itself. This book will not judge but will open the realm of the buddhist precepts before you.

A Collection of seminal teachings
Roshi John Daido Loori has assembled the single most comprehensive treasury of writings on the subject.

Often misunderstood, the practice of shikantaza is authoritatively presented and carefully examined in two dozen essays by Chinese, Japanese, and American masters, along with an appendix of six seminal classic texts.

This volume, spanning the centuries since Shakymuni Buddha to the present day, will prove indispensable to meditators and scholars alike.

John Daido Loori has given us a rare treasure.

This is the REAL THING!
With so many books on 'Zen' coming out all the time, it is important that this work be held up as a contemporary expression of the authentic teachings of Zen. Not 'self-styled zen', not 'anything I do is zen,' not 'easy way watered down zen,' but the real thing. You will love it!

Gorgeous nature photos
This book of nature photographs is just what I needed amidst all of the reports of anthrax, terrorism, etc. The essays and photo descriptions (reminiscent of haiku) are inspiring, and photos of nature (especially the rock forms) are incredibly beautiful. Several people who saw the book decided to purchase it for themselves.

The Living Lineage of Soto Zen
From Shakyamuni Buddha through fifty three generations of successors to Koun Ejo, the lineage of Soto Zen Buddhism unfolds.

Each chapter centers on a pivotal exchange between a Zen ancestor and his successor. These exchanges, preserved and used as koans, represent the living transmission of awakened mind, presented by Keizan Zenji, co-founder with Dogen Zenji, of the Japanese Soto school.

Master Keizan's lucid commentaries and verses on each case render the succession accessible to the determined practitioner. This masterful collection, parallelling in importance the Shobogenzo of Dogen Zenji, remains a seminal text for all serious students of Zen.

The translation by Francis Dojun Cook is at once meticulous and vivid, embodying careful scholarship as well as the essence of the realization of these fifty three Zen ancestors.

Time spent with this book will richly reward the reader.

Whatever happened to 'Beginner's Mind'?
dang, this is one book to discourage anyone from ever starting zen if i've ever seen one, Daido Roshi no doubt knows what he's talking about, but when he lays out a whole zen catechism of 100s of koans and various elitist sounding artsy practices required for entry into Buddha's country club, it sounds like a graduate school curriculum or something. I think this book is maybe a reaction to the laxity and scandals of 1st generation American zen. Now the 2nd generation teachers are reverting back to good-old fundamentalism and rigor to keep out the riff-raff. Guess we can see the age-old story of religious evolution happening before our very eyes here. Anyway, I sure missed the anti-elitist open-hearted Spirit of Suzuki Roshi's 'Zen Mind Beginner's Mind' while I was trying to read 'Eight Gates'.

fyi, check out some critiques and affirmations of American Zen at:

Loori tells the reader just the way it is
John Daido Loori lays the zen life and barrier gates out before the reader to examine and learn. The writing flows from page to page carrying the reader through the highs and lows of reality, the possibilities and expectations of just sitting. Definitely the book to have when you want to know how and why to sit zazen.

What do koans have to do with me?
For many new students investigating Zen Buddhist practice, the dialogues of ancient Zen students with their teachers - many of which are cited in cases known as "koans" - seem inscrutable. CAVE OF TIGERS is a wonderful gift to us. It records public dialogues (or "dharma combat") between students of contemporary master John Daido Loori at Zen Mountain Monastery in New York State. The dialogues are dynamic, spontaneous, and full of the spirit of moment-to-moment practice with a keen-eyed teacher. It demonstrates that the koan is nothing other than our life, now.

Poor binding
This book is poorly made. The binding split in the middle half of the book, which made several pages surrounding the split very loose and eventually seperate from the binding completely. All of this after I very lightly skimmed through the middle parts of the book. The physical shelf life of this book is not to be trusted.

Lame....
I will give it one star because it has value as an example of how koans can be misused and wrongly understood...

Only a westerner ...

The purpose of the koan is to free the student's mind from its "normal" way of thinking.

Since enlightenment is neither in the koan, nor in the answer, how can there be a book of answers?

Only a westerner with no understanding could have written this.

Buy his book and he will take both your money and your enlightenment!

Better to break his begging bowl so that you can both attend the banquet.
