A "must have" book on historic commercial architecture
Longstreth develops a usable classification system for 19th and 20th century commercial architecture, that works in real-world situations. Examples shown are ones that we've all seen on our own "Main Streets". This provides a useful basis for survey, evaluation, historic designation, rehabilitation, and other preservation decisions about historic commerical architecture.

A great look at the cultural history of Los Angeles
A fascintating look at the cultural history of Los Angeles and the way in which commercial spaces played a part in developing it. A must for anyone that's seriously interested in more than the usual history lesson on Tinsletown. Actually, more than simply Los Angeles, this book gives clues as to how the development of commericial spaces that we've come to take for granted have influenced cultural history across the entire nation, with Los Angeles leading the way in innovation.

A must-have book for any student of California architecture
This is the only book I have found with highly detailed information about Ernest Coxhead, Willis Polk and A.C. Schweinfurth. The other architect featured here is Bernard Maybeck, who has been written about in other books. This book is excellent at showing how the works of these four architects were influenced by their mentors, such as A. Page Brown, Mckim, Mead & White, Daniel Burnham, and how their work influenced each other into what was to be known as the San Francisco Bay Regional style. As any architecture book should be, it is well illustrated with photos and drawings of the works of these architects, as well as examples of buildings that influenced them.

Well researched documentation of retailing change in L.A
The changes in retailing which have taken place in L.A. which are examined in this book have occured throughout the United States and are taking place throughout the world right noe. The population shift to the suburbs and shopping in regional malls.

This has caused the value of retail space to decline in many area of America.

Very Informative Book about Los Angeles
If you ever wanted to know about the history of Los Angeles and how it became a large metropolitian area, this is the book for you. Hundreds of pictures from the late 1800's to the 1950's makes this book a very resourceful tool.
