A true masterpiece!
This book has a very special meaning to me since I'm from the town of Wisby(nowdays spelled Visby). Born and raised on the island Gotland and lived most of my life thete. I'v built several of these coats of armour and so far everyone I've tried on have been of satisfatcion. The book is so far the best resource book I've ever found. I have for a long time tried to find the first edition, but IF you can find it somewhere it's incredibly expensive. So jus imagine my joy when I saw there was a reissue! And very soon I'm going to be proud owner of this masterpiece...
The book is really easy to use and have exceptional drawings and scetches. Transforming the scale of the objects in the book to original size is really easy and there's a lot of information i general. At last a recommendation for all you SCA-fighters out there. Try out armour no.6 and no.9 because they give very good protection and are comfortable to wear.

It works!
I've made armor using the diagrams of existing armor types from this book. I didn't much care for some of the strapping arrangements described, so I designed my own. (Hey, this is the armor the regular fighters left behind - Wisby was defended by the teens and the oldsters to judge from the age of the bodies. This suggests the men of prime fighting-age were elsewhere, with their primary armor.) It worked, well, and protected me in combat. And the illustrations and text were clear, clear, clear.

Great book!
This is the complete version of the orginal book all in one book, not two sets like the first. There is just a little intro added by Price. BUY THIS BOOK! It has wonderful information on the skeletal finds, plus it shows the orginal armor that was found, sketches of it, and recreations done by Bengt and company. I am thrilled they republished this book! It is impossible to find the orginal two volume set.

Ya fer sure! A Fun Book by Swedes for All Children!
Both my boyfriend and myself have no children, but we love thisbook so much we are desperately trying to think of all the people wecould buy it for. The drawings and the modern associations ("Y is for Yoga.") are great...

A happy, fun, quirky book! A fresh approach to ABCs!
Christopher Carlson has an approach to ABCs that is extraordinary... In his eclectic little red cow, bumpé, he creates a magic persona that turns alphabet into fantasy. With references to Opera and words like "cappuccino" it's definitely not your run-of-the mill ABC book!!! I LOVE it!!!

What I Think of The Theologia Germanica
This is a good book with lots of insightful spiritual advice which is written in a simple format. Another good thing is that it works for all the major Christian denominations and not just Catholicism.
My favorite part was the cover because that guy looks so grumpy!

The Theologia Germanica: A Mysticism Classic.
_The Theologia Germanica_ is a beautiful piece of medieval mysticism, written by a Christian knight and made famous through its publication by Martin Luther. This work emerged from the "Friends of God" movement of the fourteenth century within the Catholic Church. It sought to bring man to the life of Christ, following in the example of Christ along with those who have achieved true illumination. The work contrasts these individuals, "the illumined", with those who merely follow Christ out of desire for reward and with those who follow Christ and therefore believe themselves to be perfect, "the free spirits". Much of this is in reference to the movement of the "Brothers and Sisters of the Free Spirit" which existed at that time and who interpreted Christ's resurrection as an opportunity to engage in libertine and liscentious acts. The author of this tract responds disapprovingly to this kind of behavior and shows how it deviates from true Christian piety. Thus, we see that those who follow the true light, follow in obedience but do not do so solely out of want of reward; they love God because He is Good and reject the "I, Me, and Mine". The work explains God's love of Himself as not a selfish form of love; but rather, God loves Himself because He knows He is Good and for that reason alone. In the same manner, should the follower of Christ reject himself and love God solely because He is Good. This is the message of the mystical author.

This tract had some influence in the medieval mystical movements and is similar to the mystical writings of the Dominicans Johann Tauler (who Luther at first believed to be the true author, later rejected) and Meister Eckhart. Luther regarded this book as the third most important book he came into contact with, after the Bible and the writings of Saint Augustine. Subsequently, the book had some influence in Protestant theology and orthodox Lutheranism, as well as some interest for Catholic scholars. A must read for all interested in medieval mysticism or for those looking for spiritual fulfillment in the Christ-life.

Excellent scholarship.....
THE PERIOD OF THE WITCH TRIALS is the 4th and last volume to be published in the six-volume series edited by Bengt Ankarloo and Stuart Clark 'Witchcraft and Magic in Europe'. In some respects, I found this volume a small disappointment as it's thinner and less interesting than earlier volumes about 'Biblical and Pagan' societies and 'Ancient Greece and Rome' which relied heavily on archeological work. Still, the book contains first class scholarship and tells an important part of the total story. The volume includes several essays.

Part 1. "Witch Trials in Continental Europe" investigates the secular record of the "trials" legal and otherwise that took place in Germany, France and the Mediterranean. William Monter suggests that since the 16th Century, many scholars have attempted to understand and explain the "witch burnings" which racked Europe in early modern times. He suggests while it is incredibly difficult to decipher the "mind of a different age" it is impossible not to link the burnings in the 16th Century with major developments of the age including the Reformation, counter-Reformation, and various political changes.

Monter suggests a major criticism of Luther and Calvin regarding the church of Rome was that it tolerated "pagan" behavior. Early Christian theologians like Augustine linked the devil with witchcraft (from whom witches were thought to draw their power), but from the perspective of the reformers the church had not done an adequate job of acting on this information. The Catholic Church held that not believing in the devil was heresy and the church tried people for heresy--not witchcraft per se.

Monter compares the relative moderation of the tribunals of the Mediterranean Inquisitions with the secular jurisprudence of central, southern and western Europe. He says that during this period "diabolical witchcraft" became a criminal offense meaning an activity involving secular government. People were tried for witchcraft by secular governments but seldom executed. Monter suggests most of the witch burning took place in villages where neither the secular government or the church had absolute control, and these villages (both Protestant and Catholic) tended to be East of the Rhine.

Part 2. "Witch Trials in Northern Europe" covers the Netherlands, Scandinavia, UK, and Iceland. Expanding on Monter's essay, Ankarloo describes the judicial revolution that took place in the northern and western Europe. He suggests that during this period jurisprudence moved from an "accusatorial" to an "inquisitorial" position. The Humanist movement "enlightened" the judges who would not punish someone unless it could be shown that the accused had harmed another. Ankarloo also suggests that the notion that people burned for witchcraft were old crones is mistaken. At the early part of the witch burnings more men than women were executed and many of the victims of were children. In fact, the victims at Salem in the New World represent a good cross-section of who was executed for witchcraft in the latter part of the period.

Part 3. "Witchcraft and Magic in Early Modern Culture" is most interesting from my perspective. Stuart Clark explores the concept of magic in the early modern period and divides it into three categories. He says evidence exists that "popular" magic was practiced by many people from all walks of life and involved healing and love potions and charms and curses. Another type of magic was "demonology" which the church connected to the power of the devil. The third category was "intellectual magic" which interested Francis Bacon and others associated with Renaissance thinking.

Clark includes a discussion about conflicting views concerning the connection between intellectual magic and the scientific revolution. He then goes onto discuss the politics of witchcraft, including the connection between magic and the exercise of power. Queen Elizabeth and other rulers of the age understood how magic could be used to support the concept of divine right, a notion salient in Europe until recently. The last essay alone is worth the price of the book.

With an especial focus on the prosecutions
Collaboratively compiled and edited by Bengt Ankarloo and Stuart Clark, Witchcraft And Magic In Europe: The Period Of The Witch Trials is a scholarly examination and analysis of supernatural beliefs in Europe with an especial focus on the prosecutions for the crime of witchcraft, which were most frequent during the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries. Examining witch hunts, methods of torture, historical incidents, and how beliefs in witchcraft, magic, and demonology affected European culture, Witchcraft And Magic In Europe is an informed and informative amalgamation of history and interpretation. Also very highly recommended are the University of Pennsylvania Press companion titles: Witchcraft And Magic In Europe: Biblical And Pagan Societies; Witchcraft And Magic In Europe: Ancient Greece And Rome; Witchcraft And Magic In Europe: The Middle Ages; Witchcraft And Magic In Europe: The Eighteenth And Nineteenth Centuries; and Witchcraft And Magic In Europe: The Twentieth Century.

A master's overview
Sundkler was an Africanist scholar and a working missionary. This is his last book, completed at his death by his research assistant. It covers the entire rich history of Christianity in Africa, with emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. With such a magisterial attempt to cover a huge number of eras and regions, it is bound to be less than perfect, yet what is amazing is how close it gets. Sundkler brings his scholarly study of the independent churches into the context of the entire Christian development from the time of Christ. Nothing in print matches this book, and it will be awhile before another scholar of this ability appears to attempt it.

A seafaring cat's adventure
Olaf is an orange cat loved by a young girl. He loves to go on holiday with his family as they sail on a large lake. One night a storm comes up and washes him overboard, and the book tells of his and his family's adventures as he is lost and then found. My favorite part is toward the end when Olaf befriends Hamlet, a black cat that was left on the island by its family, and their subsequent adventure together.

Protein Folding Kinetics: Biophysical Methods
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (1999)
Author: Bengt Nolting
Amazon base price: $118.00
Average review score:

An excellent resource for biochem / biophys students
Students and faculty alike have attested to the extraordinary usefulness of Nolting's book of the high resolution of rapid reaction kinetics. The book was really help me learn why protein folding is such a highly efficient process, and which extremely advanced methods have become available to study biophysical and chemical reaction kinetics not only in the millisecond, microsecond and picosecond time range, but also with amazingly high structural resolution. The graphics were great and provided me with plenty of information about numerous biological and biophysical methods, in particular protein engineering, DNA cloning and site-directed mutagenesis, Phi-value analysis, NMR, circular dichroism, fluorescence, pulsed LASER spectroscopy, temperature jumping, ultrafast mixing, stopped-flow, dielectric relaxation, acoustic relaxation, and pressure jump techniques. If you want to learn or teach modern biophysical methods ... this is the book of your choice.

Guide to an early film master
This is a clear biography of a key film pioneer. The differences in the development of the European film tradition when compared to that of America are clearly outlined. Sjostrom is a facinating figure, both in Sweden and in Hollywood. A very nice picture of the man.

Review of Model-assisted Survey sampling
A great reference for survey sampling results. Derivations are mathematically rigorous and not for the faint of heart! I would not suggest this book for beginning grad students, as it is lacking somewhat in readability.

thorough and practical account of survey sampling
This book provides a graduate level text for survey sampling based on models including superpopulation models. It is a very up-to-date and modern approach and includes material on resampling methods as well as all the classical material on random sampling, stratified sampling and sampling proportional to size. They also provide methods for handling regression problems in the finite population context and even provide names of available software packages. Important topics (particularly for censuses) such as measurement error, nonresponse and imputation methods are all nicely treated. The book contains some practical examples and several classroom exercises.
