Very exhaustive
All the Parables of the Bible is a tremendous resource on the parables and parabolic language of the scriptures. I have studied many books but this one seems to be one of the best. There are several things that I like most about this book. It is a precise examination going into the Old Testament and showing how that New Testament thoughts were conceived in Old Testament times. Such as Christ parable of the Vineyard being taken from wicked men. That can be found in Isaiah and Ezekial's prophecies. Mr. Lockyer is also very knowledgable presenting a rounded view from many different writers to show the variety of thought. He pulls from some of the masters such as; Ada Habershon, Arthur Pink, R.C. Trench G. Campbell Morgan and many others. The most important things is that Mr.Lockyer really reveals the clear concise idea of the Master is trying to convey. I give this a two thumbs up and tell everyone looking for a reference on the parables that this book is worth it's weight and gold!

Extremely Thorough Reference for Parables
Although this may not be a ground breaking text with new and exciting theories, it is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to understand the parables of the Bible better. The book discusses parables in both the Old and New Testaments. You can look up the parable by the chapter and book that it appears in, and there is also a way to reference them by topic/subject.

I've used this commentary a lot in my Bible studies because it is very thorough and even handed. Lockyer breaks the parables down item-by-item, point-by-point, then summarizes the dominant critical interpretations of each one. Because his treatment is extensive, the commentary for a single parable will often run for several pages.

I appreciate the clarity that his summaries bring to the text. Also, he is careful to admit that we can over interpret things and for the most part, manages to avoid this tendency. He asserts his own interpretation for each parable, but not in a know-it-all fashion.

This book challenges me to think about what God wants us to learn through these stories. They are like little puzzles, and I am fascinated to think about all the different ways they can be interpreted. Also, this book has cleared up some parables that were downright confusing.

Bible Study tool that reads like a devotional
I am a fan of the late Dr. Herbert Lockyer's books. All the Divine Names and Titles in the Bible happens to be the one I most refer to when studying or preparing a talk. He has done the intial, exhaustive research of listing all the names of the Trinty and giving scriptural references for each as well as a giving commentary on them. Though, I tend to stay away from commentaries, I find Lockyer's to be very straightforward with scripture and exceptionally praise-worthy.

A Comprehensive Text that Needs to be Republished
How in the world could such a book be out of print? Does it reflect the mentality of Christians today, that they are more focused on themselves than on God? The publisher probably wouldn't take this book out of print unless people just weren't buying it. Well, people need to read this book. It is a hidden classic, part of a series Herbert Lockyer produced on the Bible. The names and titles (and attributes) of God are the very foundation and purpose of the revelation of the Bible. This book is comprehensive and an excellent resource for critical Bible study concerning the Person of God. Such a book would help restore the theocentric and Christocentric thinking and living that is so absolutely critical for correct Bible interpretation and Biblical obedience.

Focused on Jesus Christ: The Theme of the Bible
Jesus Christ is the only Redeemer of sinful man. Jesus Christ is the only full revelation of God, as revealed in the Bible. History is utterly dependent on Jesus Christ, who He is and what He is doing. So this book will take you a long way in focusing your interpretation of scripture on what, or Who, scripture is about. Here is a book that is excellent for one wanting to start studying more in depth the MANY attributes and works of Jesus Christ and how all of history revolves around His sovereignty. Mr. Lockyer does a great job and will get you started, expanding your mind beyond the "milk" theology in which so many Christians remain. But be careful. He bought into the very young doctrines of premillennialism and dispensationalism, so you will find his doctrinal explanations as related to the return of Jesus Christ to be "newspaper" theology rather than biblical theology.

A great critique of all the specific and symbolic prophecies
This the best book on the Messianic prophecies that were attributed to Christ! It goes into unprecedented depth in the symbolic messianic prophecies which not too many authors chose to go into. This is an excellent book from an acclaimed author who was beyond 80 years of age when he wrote the book.

One of the best interpetations of Jesus' life I've read
This book is a long gospel.

It is unbelievably well-written and truly fascinating. The desriptions are vivid and colourful; Sholem Asch is simply great at revealing the mysticism of Judaism. I can only agree that it feels as if he has seen the events with his own eyes; his interpretation is well thought out and and well 'felt out'.

To me this book was a spiritual experience comparable to few others - like the Bible and 'The Glass Bead Game', perhaps.

Amazing richness of colors
I read the Brazilian-Portuguese edition, translated by Monteiro Lobato, a well known brazilian writer. He has done a great job, too. The book is absolutely beautiful, captivating, magic. It transposes you in time and space. People and facts are presented with such clarity that it's almost if you were there, watching things happening. It provides an important lesson in the end, too.

Christ's Ministry in Living Color!
Just as the reading of Josephus's 'Works' illumined my understanding of, and appreciation for, the Old Testament and the Jewish heritage of my Christian faith, so did reading 'The Nazarene' inform my understanding of 1st century Jewish life, culture, mores and religious practice. Seldom have I felt so utterly absorbed in the world of an author's creation (A possible exception being 'City of Joy'). I'm having a harder time convincing myself Mr. Asch wasn't a first-hand witness to the events he describes than I would convincing myself he was. For 600-odd glorious pages, I was there amidst all the political and spiritual tumult of the times and the confusion and emotional chaos of those grappling with the life and words of Yeshua of Nazareth, both from within and without the Messianic camp. In 'The Nazarene' I didn't read a book, I had a spiritual experience that - once I've had a chance to distill and absorb it - will profoundly affect the way in which I believe and, therefore, live and exercise my faith. I wish there were ten stars.

A Good Starter Book, But Be Careful
Here is a book that is excellent for one wanting to start studying more in depth the MANY doctrines of the Bible. We often forget how many major doctrines there are. I personally have found approximately 50 doctrines in the Bible related to salvation alone. Mr. Lockyer does a great job and will get you started, expanding your mind beyond the "milk" theology in which so many Christians remain. But be careful. He bought into the very young doctrines of premillennialism and dispensationalism, so you will find his doctrinal explanations as related to eschatology to be "newspaper" theology rather than biblical theology.

Good basic Bible doctrines book - nice place to start
In 1964 Herbert Lockyer originally published "All the Doctrines of the Bible" and it has been in print ever since. While this is hardly all the doctrines that are found in the Bible by the various religious groups, it is the thirty most important doctrines that are held by pretty much all of the Christian doctrines.

The book starts with a brief introduction to how to study Christian doctrine. From there it starts into the doctrines of Divine Revelation, Divine Inspiration, God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, Angels, Satan and Demons, Man, the Covenants, Predestination, Sin, Salvation, Grace, Repentance, Regeneration, Substitution, Redemption, Reconciliation, Faith, Adoption, Assurance, Righteousness, Peace, Sanctification, Christian Ethics, Eternal Security, Prayer, the Church, and Last Things.

For each doctrine the chapter clearly defines it and follows with the development of the doctrine using specific Bible verse references. On some matters, such as baptism, it provides thoughts of other great thinkers of the past. This is an excellent book for the young Christian who wants to learn the basis for common Christian doctrine and a recommended read.

A Great Primer
If you're looking for a thorough and well-rounded treatment of the major doctrines of the bible. I believe this should be your first pick. The book successfully accomplishes the author's intended goal. It sets out to help one learn how to study Bible Doctrine; Explore 30 of the most important biblical teachings; Discover how what you believe applies to your life today. There are 310 pages in the book, with great and helpful information on every page.

Good book on Revelations
We have used this book in a community men's Bible Study and found it to be very Scriptural and down the middle of the road. The author uses the Scriptures and not his own thinking in his study.

I find it is a good book for a Bible Study.

Good, thorough basic reference
In 1958 Herbert Lockyer originally published "All the Men of the Bible" and it has been in print ever since. More than just a listing of the men of the Bible, it starts with a history of Bible name, followed by an alphabetical listing of all the men named in the Bible, then a listing of the unnamed men of the Bible, and finally with an examination of Jesus Christ.

Some listings are just that - a listing of the name, the meaning of the name, and where it is located in the Bible. Where more is known about the person it is included in the listing. For example, the listing for Hezekiah covers a page and a half and includes a short synopsis of his life. The unnamed men section includes a basic listing of men such as the Good Samaritan, the rich man, the creditor, the centurion, etc.

For those who might desire an examination of the men of the Bible, the ability to quickly be reminded of who Abimelech was, or to quickly get a handle on a Biblical literary reference this is a recommended reference book.

Learn to pray zealously & correctly from payers in the Bible
Prayer is very important to our spiritual lives, especially, learning how to pray zealously and correctly. What better teacher than to review recorded prayers in the Bible. The forward to this book states "the Bible records no fewer than 650 definite prayers, of which no less than 450 have recorded answers. All the prayers of the Bible are recorded in this book followed by commentary on the reason for the prayer, its meaning, blessing, effect, etc. I found it very useful as a devotional book and it would make a very good book for reference. I would encourage you to read this on a regular basis to help enrich your prayer life.
