Spectacular presentation of the inner Canyon
C.C. Lockwood has done a remarkable presentation of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River. It is obvious from the pictures and text presented that he is extremely knowledgable of one of the seven natural wonders of the world. There are views of the inner Canyon that have never before been published and his intimate portrayal of river running on some of the largest white water in North America exemplifies his professionalism as a photographer. For Canyon lovers and river runners alike, both past and future, I highly recommend Mr. Lockwood's achievement.

A MUST for all Grand Canyon enthusiasts!
A beautiful glimpse into the heart of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River. The photographs in this book have captured some of the magic that can only be found in the depths of the canyon. I have done two dory trips through the Grand Canyon and I can say that this book is the next best thing to actually being there.

Homer Meets Huck Finn
When Federico Garcia Lorca said, "The song, the picture, are only water drawn from the well of the people, and given back to them in a cup of beauty, so that in drinking, they know themselves," he envisaged works such as this: cups of beauty filled with commonplace things. You will never see the Great River in the same light again. A lush and extravagant work accomplished by one of America's premier photographers from a raft as it noodles its way from the river's source to its mouth. Along the way, you meet Willie the river hobo and the nutria, the regulars and occasionals who ply the river for fun or profit.

A wonderful children's story!
CISSY LAVENDAR has a wonderful plot for young children. It can capture the attention has you imagine Miss Cisssy Lavendar hanging up the wash with a cat playfully lying atop her head. The story is very clever with fun illistrations. Cissy Lavendar is a short story that can be enjoyed by all.

A local classic
This is an unusual book. It offers a glimpse into a treasure trove little known beyond south Louisiana. How appropriate that LSU press should dedicate resources to preserving this material and making it available to a wider audience.

For those of my parent's generation who grew up in Baton Rouge, getting a "Fonville" portrait was as much a rite of passage as visiting the Paramount Theatre (now a parking lot) on Third Street (now Riverside Mall).

Fonville Winans' reach went beyond documenting the lives of Baton Rouge society, however, and this book capture the remarkable range of his interest. All the major figures in Louisiana politics are here, either out on the stump or in more formal posed portraits. There are also photographs of other parts of Louisiana life: music, festivals, farmland and river bottoms.

The book offers a rare glimpse into a long-gone time and place. Though it's a much bigger and elaborate book, it's reminiscent of Eudora Welty's _One Time, One Place_. A special treat is the evocative CD that paints an aural picture to match the photographs.

So now you, too, can have a Fonville.

This is a great book. Algebra made easy with this book.
Hello. I am an 11th grader in high school and for my algebra II class we are using this book. It's too bad it's not available (I could not buy it) but the book is great. I have understood all the terms used in algebra and I can solve any problem on the book. It has great examples and good definitions. If you are a teacher in look for the book to give a class, buy it... it is great! If you are a student, just like me, and you want to buy it, you won't regret paying what is costs. Happy studing fellow students! Temple of Souls.

Good starting place
I found this book to be a good beginning point for mathmatical studies. Having been a life long "problem math student" this book has made great inroads into my otherwise bleak mathmatical future. It starts at the most basic aspects of Algebra, Geometry, and polynomials finishing up in radical equations.

From the student point of view, I have to say I have enjoyed this book far more than the previous 2 I have had the displeasure of having for a textbook, and I would reccomend it to others for ease of use, learning, and economy of time.

Sunsets for your Soul
Still Waters is a book full of incredibly beautiful photographs that touch your soul. You find yourself turning each page then gazing out into space with a small smile on your face. I found myself going "...this one is my favorite, no! this one!" In the end I knew I had to own this book. The author writes a lovely introduction that enables you to visualize and feel the process and circumstances behind some of the photographs. It is page after page of magic.

Stunning beauty still awaits you in Mexico
If you are the sort of traveler, armchair and otherwise, that prefers quiet natural splendors over raucous fun on the beach, the Yucatan Peninsula will have great appeal. Photographer Lockwood spent the better part of a year documenting the stunning beauty of the areas remaining wilderness, principally at the island atolls of Arrecife Alacran and Banco Chinchorro, and the nature reserves Sian Ka'an and Calakmul. As the extraordinary photos and brief essays make clear, such natural splendors won't last long unless we all treat the land and its inhabitants with sensitivity and respect.

Makes a wonderful gift for anyone contemplating a trip to the area.

Anti Catholicism In American Culture
"Anti-Catholicism in American Culture" Is a well written and comprehensive history of anticatholicism in America. Anticatholicism in America is as old as America itself. It arrived on the shores of America with the pilgrims who brought with them Anti-catholic feelings stirred up by the British royalty after Henry the VIII'S break with rome and the gunpowder plot in the late 16th and early 17th century. As detailed in the book Anti catholic bigotry has evolved over the years from one of True doctrinal difference and political differece's to a bigotry based on rejecting anything upholding moral standards and a belife in a christian God. A large part of this book deals with bigotry in the media, and contains a chapter by William Donahue on how to deal with and respond to antiCatholicism in the media. William Donohue is a course one of the most effective in this area and his work alone in this book is worth the price of the book.

Excellent Presentation Of American Catholicism!
I ordered this book form Amazon a few weeks ago and loved it. It is well-organized and tells you a lot of information about a dark side of American history: Anti-Catholicism. It tells you about the prejudices and misinformation used by those who attack the Church. I recommend this book to every Catholic and those who are interested in learning about anti-Catholicism.

Proves Anti-Catholicism is alive and well in America.
Historian Arthur Schlesinger once described anti-Catholicism as the last acceptable prejudice in America. This book shows he was right.

Consider some of the evidence presented by a Center for Media and Public Affairs report.

- More than 90 percent of TV news reports were critical of the Church.

- Nine out of ten media sources criticized the Church's ecumenical efforts.

- Church teachings and practices received less support now than in any previous decade.

This insightful books examines the evidence. Not surprisingly it finds a media which uses negative generalizations, invented history, vicious stereotypes, shared prejudices, and outright denigration of Catholic religious beliefs.

This excellent resource includes a comprehensive analysis of media coverage of the Catholic Church from 1963 to 1998. It includes contributions from former Our Sunday Visitor president Robert P. Lockwood, Catholic writer Lou Baldwin, associate director of communications for he New York State Catholic Conference Rick Hinshaw, veteran Washington correspondent Russell Shaw, and Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights president William Donohue.

The book also features a practical chapter outlining 12 ways individuals can improve their relationships wit the secular media.

This book should be required reading among the politically correct, anti-prejudice and diversity training fare taught on our nation's college campuses.

This is an excellent text for High School & College Levels
This text is well written and easy for students to follow. I would have given this book 5 stars except for a few proofreading errors. As of today, the solutions manual is not yet available, which would certainly support the text. This book can be used in consecutive classes for Into & Intermediate Algebra.

Very thorough and a very logical order of presentation
I used this book to teach my community college algebra I and II
courses.
I found it to be so logical in its presentation, that I
quickly yanked my daughter out of her 7th grade math class (using the incredibly poor Connected Math Series -- see Mathematicallycorrect.com) and decided to home school her in math using this book. She is at the end of 8th grade and by following a program of 20 problems a night she is now completing 10th grade math. She now loves math and understands it thoroughly. There are enough problems to reinforce all concepts.
