Packed with important authors and works
This revised edition of an original 1991 publication in multicultural American fiction provides eleven new authors to join the others profiled in the prior anthology. Add a time line of historical events from 1900 to present times within the context of these short stories and you have a rich blend of multicultural history in fiction which is packed with important authors and works.

Good for university classrooms
Excellent variety of multi-cultural American writing. Offers new materials for thinking about immigration, immigrants' experiences, etc. I've used it in an Introduction to Fiction class at a university with good success.

Different, but not necessary good
The stories portray Chinese Americans as real people during the turn of the century. At that time, most of the Chinese were seen as one-dimensional. The author gave them emotions and feelings, yet did not portray them in a positive light. I give her credit for being these characters into the mainstream, but I think she did a dis-service by making them sound sterotypical and backward. The stories themselves are entertaining, but not terribly memorable.

Great short stories!
I like Sui Sin Far a lot more than Maxine Hong Kingston or Amy Tan. I'm glad someone finally portrayed Asians correctly. You can always count on this important author.

The Heath Anthology of American Literature
In purchasing this book, I was expecting to find something similar to the second volume of the Norton Anthology of American Literature. Unfortunately, I found this book to be far inferior. It has works by some of America's most highly commended authors, and has some great short stories. However, the excerpts from authors' longer works seem to be lacking; there should either be longer excerpts or more poingnat scenes should have been chosen. The anthology spends far too much time describing eras, and not enough in inserting major works. Some of the breakdowns/characterizations of the peices included are awkward, and tends to underrate the authors by putting them in sectionss that degrade their work.

Yellow Light: The Flowering of Asian American Arts
This is the kind of pseudo-pc nonsense people grasp at while trying to "publish or perish." Talking on both sides of the issue -- pay more attention to Asian artists, but don't consider us as Asian, or as a group. Anger and ambivalence, "flavor of the month", whining that mainstream culture is insensitive and "nude pantyhose are three shades too light," this book collects a hypocritical melange of opinion and personal experience with little redeeming value.
