Deeply satisfying addition to your Walker Percy Collection
Although Percy's output was prodigious compared to some literary greats, his six novels and two major non-fiction works leave his still-growing network of fans looking for more. "Conversations with Walker Percy" meets that need. While the biographies of Percy are helpful, there's nothing quite like hearing it straight from the author in this series of interviews. I finished the volume feeling ready to tackle his novels again prepared to look for gems I'd missed the last time around.
Essential Reading for Percy Enthusiasts
This volume (and its companion, More Conversations With Walker Percy) offers a fascinating and compelling glimpse into the mind of Walker Percy and a valuable study of the development of his literary and philosophical convictions as his career progressed. Though Percy's funny satirical piece "Questions They Never Asked Me" would seem to indicate that he found interviews dull and repetitive, the best pieces here clearly demonstrate the pleasure he took in discussing his ideas with an interested, engaged interviewer.

A Balanced and Knowledgable Portrayal
African Americans is a superb and balanced portrayal of the history and current situation of African Americans in Michigan. The book is well written, objective and extremely well researched. The solutions proposed are realistic and well thougt. The analysis is logical, presented well and understandable. This is the best book I have read concerning African Americans.

Requires thinking and will challenge all Christians.
This compendium of Lewis's books is a must read for all Christians. Short clips require very deep thinking about a variety of important Christian subjects. You will not be able to read quickly or even just once. Meditation and Reflection is an apt title.

Revealing
Having been a lifelong Cowboys fan I saw this book and had to read it. The first thing I found upon reading it was that total honesty of Coach Landry and the guts it took to wither all the storms life can throw at one person. I found that, even though it deals worth football, there are lessons that are applicable to everyday life. This would be a great book for all school children to be assigned to read. It shows what can happen when one person puts faith and families and principles ahead of instant gradification.

"A Must Read For Everyone"
Some people might get taken away by the title of the book, but I recommend this for people who are interested in finance, overcoming adversity, and also those who like a good love story. The life of Reggie Lewis was like something out of a fairytale. A young kid from the ghetto talks his way into Harvard and graduates with honors, shortly after he opens a law firm, meets the woman of his dreams, and buys a billion dollar company. It has a dramatic ending, but those who know of his legacy already have a hint. So have fun with Reginald Lewis as you read the story of his life
This book is truly a masterpiece...
This book is one that motivates me. This is one of the best books that I have ever read. It truly ranks up there. Reading how Reginald F. Lewis, Kappa Alpha Psi brother, Virginia State '65, made it to Harvard without taking the LSAT, or even putting an application, and becoming the first and only person to do so, deeply inspired me. One of the things that I got from reading this book was Reginald Lewis' sense of determination. A statement that I got from this book which depicts how Reginald Lewis refused to carry his race on his shoulder also inspired me. He said " I'm not going to carry my race on my shoulder. If I can be helpful to others, that's fine, but I'm not going to do my work because I'm a role model for all African Americans. That's bunk. I'm not responsible for any body's life, I'm responsible for my life. And I'm responsible for realizing my own dreams. I deeply respect such an attitude, as opposed to that attitude which relies on black people who made it in life to carry everyone along. Overall, I found this book to be exceptionally well written. I enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone.
Unfortunately there are only 5 stars to give to this book...
Reginald F. Lewis offers to us a guidebook on perseverance, not understanding limitation and humanity that is certainly a must read. He teaches us through his life that the many self-imposed limitations are the greatest obstacle to success. To see a man dedicate himself to his familiy, business and community in a manner that should be considered enviable for ALL races, is truly inspirational. A consumate "player" Reg sought to understand "the game" and all of its nuances then to play it to perfection. He recognized the role that race played but would not allow it to be a limiting factor in his personal or business lives. His life serves as a testament to the triumph of the human condition over a hand that many would say should have dealt him out of the game. I consider this book my inspiration and guide as I navigate the waters of business and investment. The title may put off many but it speaks volumes to Mr. Lewis' philosophy. If readers of all races step back and consider what this title represented to him they will understand the motivations underguirding its meaning and the actually "color blind" nature of this work which should be considered a text as well as an autobiography of a great man.

A Piece of Michigan Black Gold
This book brings forth information on another aspect of African American history that has been overlooked. When most people talk about Blacks and Michigan, they automatically think of Detroit. This is a very narrow view. Drs. Walker and Wilson have written other books on the Black presence in the Great Lakes State and "Black Eden" is another chapter in the ever-evolving story. Besides some technical information that many people might find useless, the story of Idlewild involves many famous African Americans. W.E.B. Du Bois, Daniel Hale Williams, and Madam C. J. Walker all vacationed at this resort; some even owned land there. Often referred to as the Apollo of Michigan, Idlewild showcased the best in Black talent. Segregation allowed the venue to be a staple on the now renowned "chitlin curcuit". Integration took some, if not all, of that away.
"Black Eden" is also the story of regular, hardworking Black folk who would pack up the car and take the family on a weekend of fun and relaxation at the beach. Part of it is a people's history. Part of it is the rise of the Black celebrity. I believe that this book has a place on any bookshelf.

Dated content and lacking in focus
Like many of Gun Digest's titles, this book appears to collect a series of previously published articles that do not have a clear, progressive relationship. I am not a gunsmith, but was hoping to learn about the basics of shotgun functioning. This book was either much too simple -- outlining differences between SxS, O/U, and Autos -- or way too complex -- converting an old rifle barrel into a sleeve for a pump gun. Worst of all, the references to popular models are so dated (maybe 20 years) that they're almost useless. If "Gunsmithing" weren't in the title, I might feel differently; but Brister would still be the superior book on gun dynamics.
