Guerrillas and Generals: The "Dirty War" in Argentina

The one book you should read about the Dirty War
I have studied the Argentine Dirty War for over 20 years, and if I were to recommend one book to anyone to read on the subject it would be this one. There are two things that Lewis does which really set this book apart from the literature on the subject so far.

First, Lewis describes and makes sense out of all of the background starting with Peron that led up to the Dirty War. This really helps place the Dirty War in its proper context so the reader can comprehend why such terrible things occurred later. He then gives a full account of all the atrocities committed by the Argentine military. In this way he does not exonerate or excuse the Dirty War, but does make sense of why things happened the way they did.

Second, Lewis points out that there really was a war going on. The guerrillas were active, were powerful, were committing acts of terrorism and were seriously threatening to destabilize the Argentine state. A lot of anti-military sources try to portray the security threat posed by the guerrillas as a figment of the military's imagination. This was simply not true. There was a real war going on and Lewis shows that this was the case. Lewis does not excuse the ways the military chose to deal with the guerrilla threat, but does explain why rational and normal men would choose to commit such horrorific acts. In their mind they were in a desperate life and death struggle, and they acted accordingly. In retrospect they made some very bad choices, but Lewis helps explain how it all seemed rational and necessary at the time.

This book is balanced, honest and cuts through a lot of the cherished popular myths. It is fair to both sides of the conflict. Finally it is well written and flows well. I got through it in two days. This book will become a classic text on the Argentine Dirty War.

Paraguay Under Stroessner

The Only Book On Stroessner
Paul Lewis wrote this book in 1980, almost a decade before Stroessner was overthrown after 35 years of rule, the longest in the Western Hemisphere and fourth longest in the world. Lewis devotes a large portion of the book to the history of Paraguay, which is fascinating, and he also explains the politics in Paraguay and how dictatorships have ruled the country almost since independence, continuing on to an explanation as to how Gen. Alfredo Stroessner took over in 1954, and has held power through 1980. Paul Lewis also writes about the transformation of the Paraguayan economy, and how surprisingly there was economic improvement due to the conservative policies of Stroessner, and heavy foreign aid. He also explains Paraguayan culture, and why the country is still heavily isolated from the rest of the world.

This is the only book to explain Stroessner's Paraguay in detail. It is unfortunate, because Stroessner is still one of the few major world leaders without a biography. I would like to see Professor Lewis do a follow up on his fine book, perhaps a full biography of the man who shaped Paraguay for over three decades. Nevertheless, Paraguay Under Stroessner is a excellent and exhaustively researched book, and should be on the bookshelf of anyone interested in Paraguayan history.

The Crisis of Argentine Capitalism

Good economic history of Argentina
With this book I learned a lot about the economic forces that shaped Argentina into what it is today up to 1991. Not particularly light reading, but worth while, especially as an Argentine that was too young at the time to remember any of the events described here.

Learn what you shouldn't do in a country
Excellent book about the facts that caused Argentina's failure in shaping a modern economy.
Lewis makes a very thorough analysis, full of empirical data, that begins in the colonial era of the country and ends up at the first administration of Menem, with some hope at last.
Some years later, the country will show again its ability to destroy confidence and people's savings again...

A must have, but...
I agree that the material is well presented and comprehensive but be aware that much of the derivation is first for bipolar circuits and only secondarily for CMOS, often with reference back to the development of the bipolar counterparts. So unless your interested in delving into bipolar circuits as well as CMOS you may prefer a text devoted to CMOS-only analog IC design.

Excellent
This book goes into a lot of depth in the analysis and design of modern devices in Analog IC's. It does not assume anything and gives the reader insight on how all the models are derived (SPICE, HYBRID-PI etc). It goes into excellent detail for dealing with hand calculations which will give you a first order analysis of the circuit in question (with reasonable accuracy).

I got my original recommendation from other Amazon reviews (5-Star rating) and I whole-heartedly agree with them. If you are serious about Analog IC design, then this book is a MUST for you. It will not remain on your shelf, I promise!

More development of CMOS circuits!
If you are already familiar with the previous edition of this text, you'll love this edition. Paul Hurst and Steve Lewis have made significant contributions to the 4th Edition to expand the coverage of CMOS analog circuits with coverage of modern circuits used for bias reference circuits and op amps in this technology. An additional chapter was added that also covers the design of fully-differential op amps. The level of detail in intuitive explanation of circuit performance continues to make this book top-notch literature for this field of study. Another superb job by the Authors!

Basic Control Systems Engineering
Published in Paperback by Pearson Higher Education (14 April, 1997)
Authors: Paul H. Lewis and Chang Yang
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A good presentation of basic classical controls
This book is a good introduction to control systems, suitable for the undergraduate level. It covers everything from LaPlace transforms of physical systems to state feedback and PLC. It also contains several chapters on nonlinear phenomena and their analysis tools. Presentation of the material is very understandable with many formulas and equations. Examples abound, and many practical applications are presented. Basic Matlab coding for control systems is integrated, and several problems refer to Matlab. The major drawback is that this book does not cover digital control. Overall this book is a good introductory reference for classical control.
