Thorough treatment
Levy presents a well-articulated, easily read treatment of the Tabernacle of Moses, its furnishings, utensils, services and priestly clothing and functions. A great book to read to see how God was foreshadowing His Son, Jesus, well before His incarnation. Levy clearly ties together Old Testament practices & theology, which we often ignore, and New Testament beliefs. I would recommend this to anyone interested in understanding: (a) more about the Tabernacle itself, (b) a deeper insight into Jewish practices and their foundations, (c) a fuller and richer understanding of God's plan of redemption and atonement, sanctification and regeneration, worship and communication with God.

Great Book!!!
This is a wonderful book. I can't put it down. It has great detail and is easy to read. A great study tool.
I love it.

The Tabernacle: Shadows of the Messiah
Easy to read and understand. Material flows easily making the book hard to put down. Very informative and shows how every part of the tabernacle had a prophetic, redemptive and typical significance. A treasure to own and study over and over again.

Great book on natural choices & self-health care seekers.
Wow - its like condensed orange juice! Clearly explains the how, what, why of healing. The chapter and chart on Price versus Value of supplements was the clearest and easiest explanation in a few short pages, that I've ever read. The doctors and pharmacists involved in writing it, deserve applause - first time I got the whole picture, along with clear and easy to understand information about everything from herbs to vitamins, flower remedies and everything in between. Dr. Pettles one page description on his natural menopausal hormone replecment therapy and natural choices versus the drug approach, made getting the book worth every cent! I copied the page for a friend, who ended up getting the book and showing it to her doctor. She said it was so simple and clear, her doctor stopped trying to push the drugs and gave her a prescription for Dr Pettles natural hormone replacement therapy - on top of that its working for her. Not since I read Mindells Vitamin Bible, have I read such a clear, information packed book! A must have for anyone interested in natural remedies and supplements - fanstastic value for the money. Incidently, I am NOT related to the authors.

One of the Most Beautiful Haggadot Available
There are truly some beautiful artsy haggadot to be had without spending too much money. The Moss Haggadah is one of these. If you only look at the illustration on the cover, Dayenu! David Moss, who has served as an artist-in-residence at Camp Ramah, is a gifted artist who uses his talent to put forth his own interpretation of the midrash that is the haggadah.

My favorite representation is his B'khol Dor Vador (In Every Generation) spread in which he brilliantly includes small mirrors interspersed among depictions of our ancestors so that we may actually see ourselves as having been a part of the exodus from Egypt. It is nice to display some beautiful haggadot like Moss's during your seder and for the entire eight-day holiday for your guests to enjoy, and to help them gain more insight into the festival.

When you see the majesty of the Moss Haggadah, you won't have a problem spending a couple hundred dollars on this must-have haggadah.

A Brilliant Interpretation - Visual and Intellectual
Each generation throughout history produces its own interpretaion of the ancient haggadah. David Moss has created what I consider to be the most brilliant interpretation of the 20th century. Beneath his masterful art lies years of studying the traditional texts, revealing both a profound understanding of the words as well as the function of the haggadah. The rabbis who authored and edited these texts asked future generations to experience the exodus from Egypt as if we were there. Using this haggadah truly compels the reader to experience the story of the exodus by creating various levels of meaning through art and word. One sentence for example, asks us to see ourselves as if we went out of Egpyt. David, through a brilliant depiction of the verse, give us a mirrored reflection of our selves - and of people in various generations who also saw themselves as if they had gone out of Egypt. His added commentary is a profound interpretative resource. As a sofer with an appreciation of traditional Hebrew script and as a rabbi who has used and taught the haggadah for years, it is clear that this haggadah is truly a masterpiece of the 20th century. It needs to be used and found on every seder table.

I'd Like To Met This Guy...
David Toma was the person the TV show Baretta was based on, but Baretta didn't have the same love or passion as Toma. (There was a predecessor show to Baretta called Toma, a more accurate portrayal.)

About half the book is an autobiography, and the other half is filled with information about marijuana, its dangers, and personal stories of teenagers Toma knew. Toma is very passionate, and the writing style reflects how he probably spoke in the hundreds of high schools he spoke to, with passion. It's not a dry read, but very personal and passionate.

At the same time, he has a very blunt style, reminding me of Michael Savage, and lays it out, the lies of society, psychologists, and other professionals.

If your teenager is a regular user of pot, and is willing to be helped, BE CAREFUL who you take them to for help, because many, many psychologists and therapists DO NOT take the effects of marijuana seriously. If the profession has changed, and does take it seriously now, it's probably due to this guy, who campaigned tirelessly in the 60s and 70s.

I would love to have David Toma to dinner.

A candid look at the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
David Toma speaks with honesty, passion and compassion to young people and parents about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. It is not a harmless pastime as some would have you believe. Drugs and alcohol are an insidious disease that is killing, maiming and destroying a whole generation. Wake up people, the lives of our children are at stake. I highly recommend this book to every parent, teacher, counsellor, any person whose life touches anothers - everyone! Personal testimony. How to avoid the danger. What to do if your child is already involved in drugs. Signs to look for. Straight talk to teens. This book is a must for those who care.

Looking forward by looking back
This book grew out of one of the Great Plains Chautauqua, the first and best of the modern Chatauqua movement. All sorts of thinkers, writers, politicians and activists from the early 20th Century are included. Each chapter has a short introduction to the life and work of the person profiled, and a selection from their writings that includes some part of their vision for America. Everyone from Jane Addams to Teddy Roosevelt is here, as well as some lesser know people that you will find interesting to learn about.

It is interesting to read these perspectives and compare them to the realities of American life today.

This is a great work!

Outstanding Book on Joint Custody
This book surveys a lot of research on joint and sole custody and gives the reasons why children do better when they have both of their parents in their lives. There is enough material in here for any parent to know what to say to his/her lawyer or to the judge as to why he/she wants joint custody. There is also ample information in this book to enable parents to draw up shared parenting agreements. There is also an index of the custody laws in all 50 states, and an index of mediation statutes and practices in all 50 states. A terrific book!

A Great Way to Learn the Nighttime Sky
For the beginning amateur astronomer there is no better aid to learning the stars and constellations than a planisphere - and I think David Levy's new rendition of this old device is as good as they come.

Basically a planisphere is starmap printed on one of two plastic disks which are joined together in the center and free to rotate. Around the edge of one disk are the days of the year while the other disk has the hours of the day. By setting the time, on one disk, opposite the date on the other, it is possible for you to see the sky, through a window in the top disk, as it would appear at that particular day and time.

There are several thing about David Levy's planisphere that recommend it. To begin with it is BIG, 16 inches in diameter to be precise, and the printing is large and easy to read. Secondly, it is a good representation of the sky showing only those stars visible to the unaided eye. Finally, the reverse side contains information about the Moon, planets, meteor showers and a listing of interesting galaxies and star clusters visible in binoculars or a small telescope. If you are a beginning "Stargazer", or thinking about becoming one, this should be your first acquisition.

You'll want to discover a comet too!
This book is just briming with the joy of discovery. David Levy, one of the discoverers of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which crashed into Jupiter, details the exuberant joy of finding a comet. In this mostly chronological look at comet discovery and other similarly relationed astromonical discoveries Levy leads one on an engrossing journey through space. Starting with Galileo, but focusing mostly on modern discoveries and discoverers one comes to understand the motivation of these amateur and professional astronomers. Pleasantly accessible for those who can only recognize the moon, but also a wonderful trip for the expert. Beautifully written! A must read...it will make you want to discover a comet too.

The Wonders of Astronomy!
These 23 chapters discuss astronomical discoveries beginning with Tycho Brahe's supernova in 1572 and concluding with the discoveries of extrasolar planets in the late 1990s. David Levy, science editor for Parade magazine and author of several popular-level astronomy books, is best known as the co-discoverer of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which collided with Jupiter in July of 1994. Not surprisingly, the book is at its best when discussing this discovery and others made by people whom the authors know well; the personalities of these scientists (both amateur and professional) come across vividly, as does the amount of effort and luck involved in making the discoveries. The discussions of the historical discoveries are less original and engaging, and the attempts to connect them to the author (e.g., by stating that Jupiter was in the same position when first observed by the 100-inch telescope as when the book was written) are strained. The photographic reproductions--mostly in black and white--are somewhat muddy. There are a few minor errors, and the discussions are disjointed in places, but a reader with some previous knowledge of astronomy will find this book engaging. General readers; lower- and upper-division undergraduates.

Cosmic Discoveries
This book is filled with lots of interesting asides on the fascinating men and women who have contributed to our knowledge of the heavens. Mr. Levy's books never fail to satisfy.

A Giant of Science
Gene Shoemaker was truly a giant of 20th Century Science. Involved in the development of (and frustrated by) the vestigal scientific programs attached to the oh-so-political US moon program, Gene Shoemaker was a frequently-acknoledged genius. Perhaps most famous, along with his wife Carolyn and (this book's author) David Levy, for his work discovering the comet chain (Shoemaker-Levy 9) which impacted Jupiter in July 1994, Shoemaker's true legacy lay in his role as a key proponent of the theory, now widely-accepted, that most of the craters we observe in the solar system were caused by meteor or comet impacts instead of being cause by volcanism, and that this process has been at work on the Earth for millenia as well, as can be seen at places like Meteor Crater in Arizona.

Levy is always a treat to read, with an enthusiastic and easygoing style which keeps the subject accessible and the language casual. He moves the narrative effectively, and frequently refers back to earlier portions of the book to jog the reader's memory regarding various details. The book follows a more-or-less chronological course in relating Shoemaker's life, although it does follow concurrent threads in seperate chapters, so it may confuse less-attentive readers from time to time as Levy covers Shoemaker's gological work during a particular decade in one chapter, and in the next might jump back to the end of the previous decade while describing his astronomical work.

The book's only real flaw is in it's extreme reverence for Shoemaker and the resultant unwillingness to dig for "dirt" in the process of profiling this colorful and contentious man, understandable considering how close Levy was to Shoemaker, and how close he remains to Shoemaker's wife Carolyn. While the general impression is that there was little actual dirt to be found, Levy glosses over some conflicts in Shoemaker's life, especially the significant personal break with his one-time student and co-collaborator Eleanor Helin, whose near-Earth object research has been truly influential as well. Additonally, passing but tantalizing mention is made in places of his (apparently) less-than-perfect relationship with his children when they were young.

All in all, these lapses are insignificant (worth a point off a pefect score, though), especially since it will most likely be many years before we are treated to any more thorough and (perhaps) less-biased biography by any other writer. Heartily recommended to anyone who likes a good biography or who has an interest in geology or the search for near-earth objects.

Should Be A Big Hit<BR>

This is an excellent (and probably the only) bio of Eugene Shoemaker, who nearly singlehandedly pioneered impact geology, and by doing so helped make modern, secular catastrophism palatable to scientists. On page 55 Levy quotes Stephen Gould (from "The Panda's Thumb") regarding the origin of gradualism as "a common cultural bias"; discusses Cuvier's near miss regarding the source of catastrophes attested throughout the fossil record (pp 51-52); and most nobly and notably, recounted with pretty good accuracy the central thesis of Velikovsky's Worlds in Collision without resorting to the childish distortions and namecalling found in most books which mention Velikovsky at all. This factual, non-inflammatory mention of Velikovsky and what may be the most controversial non-political work of the 20th century reveals Levy as a man of reason, courage, and character.

This biography is highly recommended.

Shoemaker by Levy
A truly delightful book about the premiere scientist. The book takes you from the early days when Gene was a kid collecting rocks in a jar, to his prominent role with the Apollo project to the seach for asteroids. Levy writes in such a way that you almost feel that you were friends with the man. Looking over his shoulder as he takes college kids on field trips to Meteor Crater and in the control room for the Voyager missions. I never knew Gene was involved in so many aspects of astronomy. Anyone who relishes science biographies should not miss this one.
