Best Basic Statistical Text for Social or Policy Sciences
Excellent description of the purpose and procedures of basic statistical techniques. Uses simplified formulas, and does not get lost in the math. Easy to read and understand. Good for social science and public policy courses, including public administration. Only drawback: does not effectively incorporate computer applications.

Jack Levin, Elementary statistics in Social research
One of the best statistics books I can think of for social scientists who are not well aquainted with statistical procedures. The book is structured in several chapters, each concentrating on one statistical problem. In the first part of each chapter the theoretical background is given, followed by examples. Then, other examples are given, so that it becomes easily understandable how to correctly use the formulas respectively when they can't be used. Finally, there is a part of exercises where the reader may apply his new knowledge, before proceeding to the next chapter. However, it is just an introduction, not dealing with more complex statistical problems. Very recommendable for anyone who needs a solid basic knowledge in statistic or who wants how to start processing existing data.

A good step-by-step guide to understanding statistics.
This is a good step-by-step guide to understanding basic, undergraduate level statistics. Students need a detailed guide to solve statistical problems, in addition to clear explanations of the statistical concepts involved. This text does a good job in both areas. The statistical tables are also very well constructed so students can use them with no difficulty.

The bible
I had the pleasure of attending the class that Jack Levin teaches at Univ. Chicago's law school where this book is the text book. I was surprised to find how readable the text is considering the complexity of the subject matter. Having read other texts on the subject, I can say that this is by far the most readable and accurate resource on these subjects. The front half of the book is the text the authors wrote and is organized from forming the company through making growth equity investments, LBOs, roll-ups, exit strategies and finally forming the PE fund. The latter half of the book contains excerpts of relevant SEC regs and IRS code as reference material for the topics covered in the first half of the book.

Even if you don't have time to read the whole text, it is a very easy to use reference for almost any issue that comes up in these types of transactions. If you are more on the M&A side, I also highly recommend the companion 3 book set titled "Mergers, Acquisitions, and Buyouts".

Levin & Fox Did It Again
Of the many books writen on the topic of Homicide, THE WILL TO KILL is unique in that it covers the topic from a perspective that is interesting to the casual true crime fan and yet is an invaluable resource to the serious professional who delves into the grisly world of murder.

Levin & Fox have produced several serious works on the topic of homicide and all reflect the fact that the authors are academically qualified professionals who definitely know their business. THE WILL TO KILL covers all bases from the chapter on "The Law of Homicide" which provides the reader with specific legal definitions of the various catagories of murder, to the victimology of murder and statistical information on a local and world occurance of the phenomonon to put the entire topic into regional and global perspective. This infomation is of great value to the professional in the field of criminology as well as to the student in the criminal justice and related fields.

Whereas traditional and historical forms of homicide are explored such as serial, mass and cult motivated murders, the new and recent trends of murder are also covered such as school shootings, workplace violence and hate motivated murder. The disturbing trend of youthful killing is discussed with predictions for furture involvement of America's violent young people. Finally, the last chapter of this work, "Getting Away with Murder" looks at the insanity defense and the dilemma of handling youthful killers in the courts. Capital punishment is also a topic of the last chapter.

Throughout the book, interesting and informative case studies are cited which provide the reader with direction for further research on the topic. The overall demographic coverage of this book can save professional and student a great deal of time searching out similar information from numerous sources.

Speaking as a professional criminologist, I look forward to Levin and Fox's next book, DEAD LINES: ESSAYS IN MURDER AND MAYHEM.

Law Students in VC classes
This book is an excellent primer for law students in VC/entrepreneurial finance classes, and I think is currently the most popular text for those kinds of classes. Even if it's not your required text, I'd recommend it; while the price is high, it's presented very well, and is probably the most concise text I've found on the subject. And attorneys who work in the field have told me that it's an invaluable desk reference. It is geared towards the attorney, so non-lawyers might find it cumbersome. But all in all, if you want to know the law in this area, this book's for you.

Great work!
I read this book twice (not the appendix though, which is the support for the text), it incorporates tax law and practice, GAAP, and SEC issues with Venture Capital and similar transactions. It explains how to start a fund, how to structure deals, and how to exit the investment as well as familiarize the reader with the VC industry. Very detailed book and easy reading.

Ageism: Prejudice and Discrimination Against the Elderly
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (1980)
Author: Jack Levin
Amazon base price: $11.00
Used price: $13.00
Average review score:

great insights, fairly engaging read
In this book, Levin discusses the social problem of ageism, the discrimination against the elderly. It is a fairly engaging read; the language is academic and intended for scholars, but someone who is interested in the topic would be able to understand the points that he is trying to make. The best aspect of this book is Levin's development of the idea of blaming the elderly for their status in culture. Many studies (prior to 1975) focused necesarily on the deterioration of the elderly's functioning and created the notion of "blaming-the-victim," the impact of which Levin discusses extensively in his book. From a sociological point of view, this book is very interesting in light of the many recent theories of disabilities. It is also good for people who are serious students of gerontology and who wish to further understand society's influence on the psychology of aging.

Garbage In, Garbage Out
This book speculates far more than good authors should do, especially dealing in the mind-boggling world of the serial killer. They are horribly wrong about the extent of Henry Lee Lucas' crimes (the numbers) and seem to know little about Ted Bundy that doesn't come from either Bob Keppel, Hugh Aynesworth or Stephen Michaud. Would love to see some original research.

Dave's Serial Killer Home Page Book Review....
All of us seem to be fascinated by Murderers, especially killers that strike numerous times i.e.: Serial/Mass murderers. Why? It has always been human nature to try and understand death; and with death comes the sad realization that there are killers walking among us. Killers that we pass by everyday unknowingly. Once these killers are caught, we want answers, we want to understand why it was that they committed the crimes that they are accused. Myself I go straight to the killers themselves. But for many this is an impractical approach. For those of you that wish to get a glimpse into the mind of a killer without becoming personally involved, I recommend this book 'Overkill'. In this book you will find views on the why and the how. You will discover the motivations and desires of some of the most twisted individuals ever to walk the earth. You will also hear opinions on one the most important questions: Can they be spotted before they kill?

I had to read this in a diversity class
I am taking a diversity class at my local community college called "Racial and Cultural Minorities".

"The Violence of Hate" is a mandatory book assignment and the teacher said he was going to give us extra credit if we'd write up a little critique about it. Since there's not much on the net about this, I figured I'd share it with the rest of you, too.

The book is written by Dr. Jack Levin, a professor of Sociology and Criminology. He's also director of the Brudnick Center on Conflict and Violence at Northeastern University in Boston.

Although boring at times, the book was educational. It gives the reader an overview of hate terminology and clarifies their meanings. It made me realize that even though I am not prejudiced, I was a "spectator"- much like the Germans who failed to act during the Nazi regime, I have also witnessed bigotry and failed to speak up against it.

It explains the psychological and economic advantages of bigotry with lots of statistics and book references. This was the part that I found most tedious.

There were some interesting parts to this book such as his personal recollections about appearing on the Jerry Springer show with three racist skinheads. Another story of a white woman who, several years before, was being treated for cancer in South Africa was fascinating. She had a reaction to chemotherapy which turned her skin dark, and she got a first hand experience of the cruelness of Apartheid.

I wish he had elaborated on his personal experiences a bit more.

At the end of the book is a list of Anti-Hate Websites.
I'm an Internet geek, so I found these to be helpful; especially since another extra credit assignment involved visiting one and writing a paper about it. It would have been more complete had he included a list of Hate websites as well. (I also visited a few of these as well and they were horrifying but ultimately more interesting.)

If history interests you, you might enjoy it a little bit more than I did. I did learn a little so I guess that's worth something. Ultimately, if it wasn't for the class, I don't think I would have ever read this.
