Excellent. Like skiing, you'll love it or hate it.
For those of us that feel like we are living a real-life movie, or vice-versa, you'll love it. The movie was criminal, forget it. As for this book, if you can find it - read it.

Fantastic, Psychological, Intense, Absurd, Dark, Humorous
If those buzzwords appeal to you, you'll want to get your hands on this book and also Jeremy Leven's other book, "Satan: His Psychotherapy and Cure by the Unfortunate Dr. Sy Kasler, J.S.P.S.". Leven has a rare ability to drag his protagonist into the abyss of madness, and you, the reader, must follow. But there is something compelling about this descent; the journey is involving and, in its odd way, humorous. Definitely not for everybody, but those who like it will love it.

"Creator" was made into a movie in 1985, with Peter O'Toole and scripted by Jeremy Leven. The film was not without appeal, but they had to vastly simplify the rich structure of the book for translation to the screen. I'd advise reading the book, so you'll experience it as it was meant to be. Don't see the movie until after you've read the book.

Why Isn't This Back In Print???
I stupidly put my copy in an over-enthusiastic yard sale 10 years ago, and now wish I hadn't. This exciting and original book (and, yes, funny!!) is about as strange a story as I've ever read. Sort of a twist on "2001," the computer in this sci-fi/humor/fantasy/thriller goes a step farther than HAL! Terrific book, hope I can find it again...

Life-changing, and funnier than Hell...
Can a mere novel completely change your brain chemistry andirreversibly pickle your theology? This one WILL. You'll also laugh, cry and forever rethink what they've always told you about God and Satan. This book's perfectly constructed irony and pit-dark black humor makes it a worthy companion of 'Catch 22', but its characters aren't typical black-comedy pawns. Levin's players are fallible and funny, warm and loving, distinctively-drawn people for whom you'll care deeply. The females are especially strong, sympathetic and distinctive... The book is a hilarious send-up of psychotherapy doublespeak, a surprisingly profound yet entertaining meditation on philosophy and theology (from Satan's side of things), and a tear-provoking tale of Kassler's family, full of love for each other but hopelessly dysfunctional... If Kassler's 1970s-style recap of Job's bad luck streak doesn't plunge him to such wretched depths that he follows through on his planned suicide (and that's a big 'if'), he'll instead plumb the Devil's unhappiness via the strangest psychotherapy ever transcribed. If Kassler makes Satan happy once again, Kassler's reward will be to learn the answer to The Great Question, ''What is life?'' (Yep, the book tells us this cosmic truth, too -- worth the price of admission alone, as the carny pitchmen used to say) .... OK, enough gush. You've GOT to read this. PLEASE. I PROMISE it will be worth every second it takes you to find it. THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

One of the funniest, smartest, most touching books I've read
I discovered this book in my college bookstore after it came out in paperback and I must have read it a dozen times since. It's definitely one of those books that get funnier and more impressive with each read. Interestingly, I work in Hollywood and had the good fortune to have breakfast with the brilliant author of this book, Jeremy Leven, who has since left the world of literature to make his fortune in the world of Hollywood. He wrote and directed the Johnny Depp film, "Don Juan DeMarco", and did some early work on "The Preacher's Wife". At this breakfast, Jeremy told me that he had an idea for a follow-up to "Satan", which he called, "The Christ and the Electric Singing Machine". Apparently, he planned a trilogy -- "Creator", his first book (and also bloody brilliant -- turned into a 1984 film with Peter O'Toole), was the first book in the trilogy, followed by "Satan" (in fact, the hero of "Creator" is pretty much the same character in "Satan"). Alas, with Jeremy making a fortune in Hollywood, I doubt very seriously we'll ever see the long anticipated third installment in this trilogy. Oh well. Guess I'll just have to read "Satan" again.
