It a good thing I live all the way down in Houston, otherwise, I'd be camping on Molly's doorstep until she swore we were friends. I have never connected so completely with a writer, maybe part of it is we are the same age and I, too, come from the state where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.
Good Golly Miss Molly, you are some special zany lady with not only a talent for writing, but also a talent for life. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this refreshing book.

This is a fast reading feel-good story. After all that is said and done ''Life is Good''. As Billie Letts said of her characters ''they live with love and sadness, yet find comfort in opening themselves to others. Ah humanity!''
I enjoyed The Honk and Holler opening soon (even the title is comical), I do recommend it and await her next book.
Caney, a paraplegic Vietnam vet; Vena Takes Horse, a lonely drifter; MollyO, a lonesome, under-appreciated mother on the verge of love; and Bui Kahn, a dangerously misplaced Vietnamese man waiting for this family, all get wound up in each other's lives under the glow of a neon sign reading The Honk and Holler Opening Soon. The sign is a town joke and 12-year-old mistake, but nevertheless, this diverse group of people comes to call the restaurant home and each other family.
In traditional Letts style the characters of this story are vivid, engrossing, and endearing. So often a cast of peripheral characters can pale in comparison to the main characters that the book focuses on, but that's not the case with Honk. Each character feels as if they fit equally into the framework of the story.
The Honk and Holler Opening Soon is a journey through love, loss, struggle, triumph, and heartbreak but it never seems sappy or overdone....just real. If you've ever lived in a small town you'll likely identify with many of Letts' characters and situations, and even if you haven't lived the life of the story you'll recognize their individual worth and inner beauty.
I really enjoyed it.. it is a very tragic story but with a happy ending! It made me laugh, it made me cry .. and sometimes totally shocked..
The language is direct and sensitive ..the style is poetic .. I could draw a picture in my mind of all the characters, the library, the garden... you feel like you are with them watching as they move around you .. trying their best to beat all the odds..
A beautiful journey of strength .. self-confidence and determination.. what the love and support of friends can do.. miracles!!
Set in a small town in rural Oklahoma, the community that the main character Novalee comes to know and cherish here could represent any small town, anywhere in America. The quirky, lovable, and loving people who populate this book sometimes stretch the reader's sense of credibility, but who doesn't know a Lexie, with her wacky ideas and theories on dieting, or a Forney Hull, with his deep love of the written word? The author does not let the caricatures get away from her; all of these people come across as real. Wacky....but real!
Finally, I loved the names in this story: Novalee Nation, who names her daughter Americus Nation. Wonderful!! Forney Hull,
Sister Husband (and her deceased brother, Brother Husband, who doesn't really have a role in the story, but whose name still jumps off the page!!) Moses and Certain Whitecotton. These are some great names.
All in all, I thought this was a very nice book. It was an easy read; I finished it up in a matter of 4 - 5 hours. It had a message, but it managed to give that message in a manner that was thoroughly subtle way. I hope you enjoy it too!
Novalee grows to love herself before she can love someone in return and finds 'Where the Heart Is.'
Reading the novel Where the Heart Is captured a glimpse into everyday American people. The author brought life into the characters capturing the same problems with everyday people, in society. The novel puts a humane side to the towns in America where human kind tries to survive. The novel addresses friendship, love, struggles, and the goodness of people. 'People are good at heart.' Understanding Novalee character allows other young readers or people to strive for success no matter what situation they are in. Novalee demonstrates strength and determination has a single mother by attending college and receiving an education. Billie Letts demonstrates the different optical paths humans have overcome through the shifts in the real world.
The novel focuses not only on life, but the importance family dependence offers. . The novel's message through out the book offers clear easy dialogue where any reader can capture 'the true message' to solve their own problems. Through out the beginning, middle, and end the book allows readers to read at an easy pace and causes readers to use their imagination. Oprah's BOOK CLUB chose Where the Heart Is as a CLUB BOOK, however, Where the Heart Is reflects the hard times any body can encounter with their life. Where the Heart Is was also made in to a great movie where both book and movie parallel the conflicts from the book, however the book captivates the characters problems and describes the main conflict in the story, even if your're in the middle of nowhere.
