It's like reading someone's diary
I enjoyed reading these letters between best friends. Reminds me of my own letters from best friends I've kept over the years ... maybe not so cleverly written, but just as dear and fun to read. Molly and Billie are fortunate, blessed to have each other. Bet they have hilarious pajama parties! and get togethers ... and understanding, patient, husbands. Keep the letters coming, ladies. I know I'm looking forward to more.

I howled all the way through this!!
I accidentally bought this book, thinking it was BY Billie Letts. Boy am i glad i made that mistake! I laughed so hard i had tears coming from all orifices. Thank you Molly Griffis for a wonderful ride!

Thank you, thank you, thank you
Thank you God, for creating Molly Levite Griffis. I have never in my life laughed so hard and so much reading a book. As a confirmed bookaholic, I assure you that is just a few books shy of a load. I was laughing so loud I kept waking my husband up!
It a good thing I live all the way down in Houston, otherwise, I'd be camping on Molly's doorstep until she swore we were friends. I have never connected so completely with a writer, maybe part of it is we are the same age and I, too, come from the state where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.
Good Golly Miss Molly, you are some special zany lady with not only a talent for writing, but also a talent for life. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this refreshing book.

Worth a honk and a holler !
After finishing a couple of dramatic more difficult novels, this book was just what I needed; a fun story filled with colorful entertaining people. Billie Letts created a wonderful story involving a melting pot of lovable, somewhat odd characters starting with Caney Paxton; a Vietnam vet who is also a paraplegic, then there is Vena Takes Horse; a Crow women with such a big heart, and then there is Bui Khanh; a vietnamese immigrant in search of the American dream, and also Galilee Jackson; a church going African American and many more...their intertwining lives bond together in strange and sometimes funny circumstances, yet their love for each other is so genuine, it is as strong if not stronger than a real blood related family.
This is a fast reading feel-good story. After all that is said and done ''Life is Good''. As Billie Letts said of her characters ''they live with love and sadness, yet find comfort in opening themselves to others. Ah humanity!''
I enjoyed The Honk and Holler opening soon (even the title is comical), I do recommend it and await her next book.

I don't know if I can wait for Billie's Letts next book...
I read her first book "Where the Heart is" and just fell in love with her unique characters. No boring people here. The next book " Honk and Holler Opening Soon" I just couldn't put it down. I think I read almost the whole book in one night...I don't think I have ever done that ever before. I made all my friend read it...I lived in Texas for 10 years and understood the atmosphere. I don't think my yankee friends got it as much as I did, but I know they enjoyed it alot. Now that her first novel has gone to film...opening up the end of April 2000, I hope this book won't be far behind. The characters here were even more endearing. Listen Hollywood...this book would make an even better movie. Billie...when are you writing another book? I will be first in line to buy it. Please say it's almost here...

Billie Letts does it again!
After reading Where the Heart Is I took a reallyyyy long time getting around to Honk and Holler. I thought surely there was no way to top her first effort, but I've happily been proven wrong.

Caney, a paraplegic Vietnam vet; Vena Takes Horse, a lonely drifter; MollyO, a lonesome, under-appreciated mother on the verge of love; and Bui Kahn, a dangerously misplaced Vietnamese man waiting for this family, all get wound up in each other's lives under the glow of a neon sign reading The Honk and Holler Opening Soon. The sign is a town joke and 12-year-old mistake, but nevertheless, this diverse group of people comes to call the restaurant home and each other family.

In traditional Letts style the characters of this story are vivid, engrossing, and endearing. So often a cast of peripheral characters can pale in comparison to the main characters that the book focuses on, but that's not the case with Honk. Each character feels as if they fit equally into the framework of the story.

The Honk and Holler Opening Soon is a journey through love, loss, struggle, triumph, and heartbreak but it never seems sappy or overdone....just real. If you've ever lived in a small town you'll likely identify with many of Letts' characters and situations, and even if you haven't lived the life of the story you'll recognize their individual worth and inner beauty.

What a life!
I read this book because it was the only book I found at the school's rummage sale!

I really enjoyed it.. it is a very tragic story but with a happy ending! It made me laugh, it made me cry .. and sometimes totally shocked..

The language is direct and sensitive ..the style is poetic .. I could draw a picture in my mind of all the characters, the library, the garden... you feel like you are with them watching as they move around you .. trying their best to beat all the odds..

A beautiful journey of strength .. self-confidence and determination.. what the love and support of friends can do.. miracles!!

Simple Beauty
At first glance, this book comes across as a very simple, easy, light read. It is a nice story, heart-warming and down to earth. But once one starts to mull this story over, it becomes apparent that the story line is built on layer after layer of contrasts, ironies, and stark opposites giving the tale more depth than is immediately apparent. Novalee is a motherless girl who, despite all odds becomes a loving mother. She is the throwaway girl who becomes a hero. Sister Husband is a Christian woman who hands out bible leaflets by day, and indulges with Mr. Spock at night.
Set in a small town in rural Oklahoma, the community that the main character Novalee comes to know and cherish here could represent any small town, anywhere in America. The quirky, lovable, and loving people who populate this book sometimes stretch the reader's sense of credibility, but who doesn't know a Lexie, with her wacky ideas and theories on dieting, or a Forney Hull, with his deep love of the written word? The author does not let the caricatures get away from her; all of these people come across as real. Wacky....but real!
Finally, I loved the names in this story: Novalee Nation, who names her daughter Americus Nation. Wonderful!! Forney Hull,
Sister Husband (and her deceased brother, Brother Husband, who doesn't really have a role in the story, but whose name still jumps off the page!!) Moses and Certain Whitecotton. These are some great names.
All in all, I thought this was a very nice book. It was an easy read; I finished it up in a matter of 4 - 5 hours. It had a message, but it managed to give that message in a manner that was thoroughly subtle way. I hope you enjoy it too!

Where the Heart Is
Abandoned by her boyfriend, in Sequoia, Oklahoma on their way to California in 1987, Novalee Nation a seven teen year old, seven months pregnant, and stranded at a Wal-Mart will discover how to survive life's hardships. Where the Heart Is, written by Bille Letts expresses Novalee Nation's difficulties, feelings and ideas when she turns face to face with her present and future. Jobless and hopeless draws Novalee decision to make Wal-Mart her secret home. Wandering Wal-Mart isles in disbelief Novalee encounters the four people who end up playing major roles in her life and future. Moses Whitecotton, Novalees mentor, Benny Goodluck, her inspiration, Sister Thelma Husband her sponsor and guardian, and Forney Hull the peculiar town librarian, who hides his true feelings for Novalee behind his books. Novalee sneaks out through the employee's entrance into the small American town without anyone suspecting for six weeks, until she accidentally delivers her baby girl Americus Nation in the Wal-Mart. Sister Thelma Husband takes Novalee and Americus into her home, offers help, and support to help Novalee start a new life. Support and love helped Novalee discover a deep devotion for her daughter a passion involving photography. Novalee's friends teach her how to enjoy a delighted and prosperous life thorough out the years.
Novalee grows to love herself before she can love someone in return and finds 'Where the Heart Is.'
Reading the novel Where the Heart Is captured a glimpse into everyday American people. The author brought life into the characters capturing the same problems with everyday people, in society. The novel puts a humane side to the towns in America where human kind tries to survive. The novel addresses friendship, love, struggles, and the goodness of people. 'People are good at heart.' Understanding Novalee character allows other young readers or people to strive for success no matter what situation they are in. Novalee demonstrates strength and determination has a single mother by attending college and receiving an education. Billie Letts demonstrates the different optical paths humans have overcome through the shifts in the real world.
The novel focuses not only on life, but the importance family dependence offers. . The novel's message through out the book offers clear easy dialogue where any reader can capture 'the true message' to solve their own problems. Through out the beginning, middle, and end the book allows readers to read at an easy pace and causes readers to use their imagination. Oprah's BOOK CLUB chose Where the Heart Is as a CLUB BOOK, however, Where the Heart Is reflects the hard times any body can encounter with their life. Where the Heart Is was also made in to a great movie where both book and movie parallel the conflicts from the book, however the book captivates the characters problems and describes the main conflict in the story, even if your're in the middle of nowhere.
