Reachign For The Stars
Excellant view of breeding in England. If you are considering becoming a breeder this will make you look at some hard choices you may have to make about keeping your own stock down to a manageable number.

A great read, the author is obviously an expert in her field and an entertaining writer too.

If your looking for genetics info it isn't here, this book is written from an older pre-genetic perspective.

A "Must Have" for the serious dog fancier.
If you could only have one book to guide you as a serious breeder and/or canine judge, this would be it! All the knowledge, experience and wisdom is contained in this one book and all you have to do is absorb it. Don't be put off by her Laborador Retriever background, the information pertains to all breeds. I only wish I had read this book 10 years ago.

A facinating read and highly informative
Learing about the five stages of the development of a dog breeder and exhibiter was mind boggling. Mary Roslin Williams is an excellent story teller and her knowledge cuts across all breeds. With the added information bringing the book up-to-date and adding famous dogs and breeders from around the world has made this book even more valuable.

Feynman honours his hero, and electroweak guy pays tribute
This is a little jem of a book. The arguably two greatest living physicists of the 80s, Feynman and Weinberg, both Nobel Laureates, pay tribute to their master, the man who said that mathematical beauty is what physicists should look for in physical laws, the one and only, Paul Dirac. These memorial lectures are the best one could wish for, together with Abdus Salam's tribute a couple of years before. I derived pure delight in reading Feynman's lecture, which explains the existence of antiparticles predicted by Dirac in his equation of the electron. Weinberg however surprisingly outstands Feynman in giving a lecture on symmetry laws, etc. These lectures would have surely thrilled Dirac, without doubt. For all physicists who like to have those little precious books on their shelves, it's a very good and enjoyable buy.

Physics by two of the very best!
As usual, the best physics books are short and to the point, as is this one. The two Dirac lectures may serve as a perfectly good mini physics course all by themselves. I always enjoy a Feynman lecture, and this is no exception. He cuts to the chase without sacrificing the plot. But, I must say, in this case the Wienberg lecture is the better of the two. Weinberg's style has a particular grace & beauty about it that gently exposes the aesthetic meaning of the search for a picture of nature.

Two of the best give great insight into fundamentals.
Feynman yet again gives great insight into the laws of physics, this time exploring the reasons for existence of anti-particles, starting from the dirac equation etc.. Plus some really outstanding photographs, that fella Weinberg will be chuffed to have his name mentioned on the book cover!

excellent
While not the 1st artist to take on the conceptions of light and its practical uses in art, now Flagstff, AZ. artist James Turrell has brought the perception of light in art to creative and fantastic new levels through his conceptions such as his famous "skyspaces" to "darkspaces," "blue rooms," etc. Many of his pieces offer low light level environments, some almost no light at all, still others brilliant hues of red and blue.

Like most artists, Turrell shies away from giving detailed explinations of his works so that each individual can surmise the piece for themselves. This is not necessarly the case in this work. Turrell wanted, (and did) to build a specific "skyscape" in order to view an eclipse that occurred in England. Like his other "skyscapes," Turrell took the environment and all of its factors, as well as very specific geometry, into account, so that he could construct the perfect medium through which to not just observe the eclipse, but to better magnify the light, or lack thereof, of the eclipse.

The book is a wonderful look at this process, complete with analysis and pictures of the eclipse, the "skyscape," etc. An added bonus is the cd by German composer Paul Schulze, who's approach to his music (a minimalist ambient style, normally) is a perfect match to Turrell's art.

Fans of Turrell, or those who are interested in the interplay between light, our senses, and the reality they both help us create, will find this rather short treatsie to be of invaluable use to them. A wonderfully intriguing work.

Outstanding play with light
James Turrell has long been a major player in the field of light art, and visitors to the Matress Factory museum in Pittsburgh are well aware of his outstanding way of playing with art and images. This amusing meditation on an eclipse is an excellent addition to his body of work

The choices we need to make over the next 25 years
This is an important albeit not uncontroversial contribution to the field of international political economy. The book tries to answer the question whether the world capitalist system is in crisis and the paths available for future world development. The works are firmly located within the world system thesis expounded by Wallerstein in many of his previous works.

The book intoruduces the concept of 6 vectors within which future paths can be examined. These are the inter-state system; world production; world labour force; human welfare; cohesion of states; and the structures of knowledge.

The book displays the weaknesses inherent in the world system thesis. These include overstating the degree of integration of the economies of the world and thus not taking into account the emergence of "non-states" run either by armed bandits or by organised crime.

The book does not deal adequately with the current state of the state. Given the debate around MNCs and their increasing expansion into areas which were the domain of the state this is an issue needing serious appraisal.

The depiction of this era as being a post US hegemonic era is also an area which will be contested by many writers, not least of all the Fukuyama's of the world.

Wallerstein concludes that the future depends onm how the following factors develop: * the extent to which there is loyalty to citizenship;

* the level of security through police order; the extent to which military orders are maintained; * level of welfare especially in relation to health and food distribution; * stability of religious institutions.

The best says it's great--I agree!
Chan Robbins (an eminent U.S. government ornithologist) says, "this handsome volume is required reading for all Delaware birders...and will be of great interest to ornithologists in other states and countries." Dr. Frank Gill (senior VP of Audubon) says with confidence that this book sets new standards for state bird books and its delicious, scholarly species accounts are rich in detailed analyses of status and trends. The Midwest Book Review say, "this seminal, ground-breaking, comprehensive reference featuring 418 species of birds is the result of over 30 years of dedicated, observational research that will prove invaluable to ornithologists, birdwatchers, and wildlife enthusiasts." They have it all right! I've read my copy all the way through. It's attractive, readable, accurate, complete, informative, interesting and fun. It would be valuable for anyone interested in birds who lives from Connecticut south to the Carolinas and west to the Mississippi River, because those states share the same species of birds found in Delaware. As an outstanding reference book, it belongs in every birder's collection where ever you live--here in the states or in other countries. Buy it for yourself and give copies to your friends.

Be a happy camper!
I descovered this book on a shelf in antique shop and have been very impressed with it. As well as being clear and concise; it is also alot of fun to go thrue. This book (puplished in 1961) has never heard of R.E.I, R.V's, or even a dome tent, but it will show you how to make one! I spent a whole afternoon just learning knot's.
The book was made during the (sort of) golden age of camping and is a no frill's, real deal guid. From trip planing to selecting chois spots, conoe handling to wilderness survivel or any thing else you can hope to imagin (except run on sentences)is all in there. Pick this book up and impress you're girl and/or buddies with your abillity to tie a horse hitch knot or tell the derections with your watch. I don't imagin any souls will seek this old book out but it deserves one good review...so dare to leave your house, see the light thrue the trees, here the traffic of a lapping lake shore and breath deep the air of your new found abilities...it worked for me.

The Human Science of Communicology: A Phenomenology of Discourse in Foucault and Merleau-Ponty
Published in Hardcover by Duquesne Univ Pr (1992)
Author: Richard L. Lanigan
Amazon base price: $34.95
Used price: $22.95
Average review score:

Publisher's Description
Communicology is the study of human discourse in all of its forms, ranging from human gesture and speech to art and television. communicology also represents the dominant qualitative research paradigm in the discipline of human commuication, especially in the applied areas of mass communication, philosophy of communication, and speech commuication. Lanigan's work exemplifies the theory of communicology by offering the bold and original thesis that Michel Foucault's thematic study of the Discourse of Desire and Power is an elaboration of the problematic discourse explicated in Maurice Merleau-Ponty's interrogation of Freedom and Terror. Various chapters cover such topics as art versus science, culture and communication, modernity versus postmodernity, feminism versus humanism, research methodology, and the Capta versus Data distinction for research validity. Actual examples of research cover the aesthetics of painting and sculpture, radio and television, rhetorical criticism of oral and written texts, and the East-West perspective on crosscultural encounter--all using the approach of semiotic phenomenology. Two special features of this book make it a worthy purchase for the teacher and scholar alike. First, Lanigan provides an Encyclopedic Dictionary that illustrates and defines the the theory and method of the Human Sciences in general and the discipline of Communicology in particular. Used for several years by teachers in a number of universities, this dictionary has become a "classic" among students before its first-time publication here. Second, Lanigan analyzes and illustrates what has been missing for years in the study of Foucault's work: a definition (with appropriate illustrative figures and tables) of Foucault's method of Archaeology and Genealogy (Criticism) for research in the human sciences, especially in the study of human discourse.

Biography of the Rocket, social history of Quebec in one
I actually bought this book in Canada in paperback form, and I am seriously impressed with Roch Carrier's storytelling ability. Having only read The Hockey Sweater, I expected a fantastic story in this book, and it does not disappoint. In Our Life with the Rocket, Carrier writes a biography of Maurice "The Rocket" Richard, one of the greatest hockey players of the last century, or some would say ever, by placing this French-Canadian hero in the context of the province's history. Carrier describes the poverty and hopelessness of the Great Depression in Quebec with vivid detail, telling how young Maurice would run errands for neighbors to earn cash when he wasn't playing street hockey. The hard work Richard put into developing as a hockey player and his career in the NHL, including the famous Richard Riots of the 1954 season, are told with great care. The connection between the Rocket and his legions of Quebecois fans, young and old, is evident. Carrier himself interjects memories of growing up in Quebec worshipping the Rocket, stopping short of completely retelling the autobiographical story related in The Hockey Sweater. He tells how Richard continued to mean a great deal to him as an adult. If the adult reader is a fan of the story of The Hockey Sweater, this book is a perfect companion to it, more fully explaining the significance of Maurice Richard to young French Canadian boys in a time when Quebec had little else to cheer about. I am seriously considering using this in a course I teach.
