Not a bad textbook
I used this book for my Environmental Geology class. Overall I think it's an ok text. It's not as readily understandable an reader friendly as some of the other introductory geology texts on the market that I have read--it's somewhat obsecure at times. I think that it's rather overpriced as well for a black and white paperback textbook.

It does however cover a large selection of material in a succint manner, yet with enough detail to satisfy the curiosity of the interested student. Some of the stuff in this textbook is not common to geology texts--principally the aspects that have to do with the biosphere.

Overall, it's a reasonable textbook, besides the cost, which I think is inflated. Textbook prices are inflated in general in any case!

Good overview of how our earth works
I used this book for an introductory environmental studies course. The book is full of information I had never before discovered. The chapters clearly describe how smaller cycles and feedback mechanisms relate the health of the earth as a whole.

If you are curious about global warming this book has great factual information to start an understanding of the concept.

This is the best textbook for earth system science
Earth System Science is a new field, one that evolves much more quickly than textbooks can be revised. This one is as current as you can expect, and it approaches the field of science in a much better way than any other textbook I have seen. In particular, most earth system texts approach the field by morphing from a traditional discipline. Usually, it's a geology textbook revised to include atmospheric, oceanic, and climatic studies. But earth system science requires an interdisciplinary approach from the start, a problem based approach. Our global environmental problems need this approach, and this book covers them in a reasonably detailed and accurate manner.

A good short introduction to radiative forcing
The IPCC-1994 follow up on the first two reports of the IPCC working group one (WG1) reports on climatic change gives a good compendium of our knowledge on anthropogenic (and natural) radiative forcing of the atmosphere and the climate system. The book fills the hole that new findings in the last couple of years have created. It will be mostly for specialists that have to know things before the rest. If you do not belong to this group, wait for the 1995-IPCC report due in the beginning of 1996.

Tasks and Communicating in Language Classrooms
This review is written by a native Spanish teacher teaching High School Spanish in New Jersey. I enjoyed reading this book because it explains in a very comprehensible way what a task is, what makes task- based teaching different and more productive than the audiolingual method in the increment of oral production in second language learners. The book mainly concentrates on tasks for oral production, on how to create tasks, and how to implement and test them. The book teaches how to change from the teacher-student: question - answer paradigm to the student-student question - answer paradigm. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about the creation of tasks, and their implementation and tests in second language settings. The book is also good for those who need to research information for further studies on tasks because it contains a large bibliography with reference to other books related to tasks with a brief summary of their contents.

Not the actual book!
I ordered what I thought was the book, but received an audio CD instead. I can't take the CDs to class.

Magnificent and thoughtful 2nd year text; full of activities
This is a superb book for use in a lively second-year Spanish college classroom. It is not meant for independent use; it's not a teach-yourself Spanish book. It's an instructor's dream as it is loaded with realistic activities that students can actually perform in class and that are interesting. The chapters are quite thought provoking and the grammar activities are well designed and paced throughout the text. I highly recommend this text.

Good Spanish textbook
It's a textbook, but it's a good one if you want to learn Spanish. A reviewer shouldn't give a book one star because he ended up with the audio version instead of the actual book.

Two Words
BO-RINGGGGGGGGG...when is someone going to write a good foreign language text book that gives the students interesting stories in addition to verbs and grammar. How about a story about Mariachi bank robbers who hold a small Mexican town captive while their leader (we can call him El Loco Uno) holds the mayor's daughter captive. After a band of rebels (these are good rebels not bad ones) catch word, they quickly dispurse to the village, where they find El Loco Uno holding Marietta (the mayor's daughter) at knifepoint. The leader of the band of rebels, Rico, throws his lassoo out but misses, and instead catches Mariettas poodle, who is barking nearby. This is key later in the story. So now El Loco Uno is angry, and he sends his men after the rebels. They engage in bloody war for a long time. Finally, after many men have died, Rico sees El Loco Uno eating a sandwich. Rico sneaks up behind him and tries to strangle him, but El Loco Uno picks up his fork and stabs Rico in the neck. Rico stumbles backward, struck with pain, and El Loco Uno kicks him in the groin. Rico falls down, and El Loco Uno pulls out his knife, ready to finish Rico. Desperate, Rico searches for a weapon, but instead finds a small ball of fur. In a last ditch attempt to save himself, he picks up this ball of fur, which happens to be muffin, Marietta's dog, and hurles it at El Loco Uno. Now ordinarily muffin would be frightened, but what El Loco Uno doesnt know is that a piece of turkey is stuck to his lower lip, and muffin is very hungry. Anyway, the story ends with Marietta falling madly in love with Rico. Now that would be an interesting book.

Sabias Que: Beginning Spanish Third Edition
This text is very informative. There are some pieces of cultural information about the Spanish-speaking world that give good insight into that culture. The one aspect of the book that I thought was not very useful, was the numerous group or team activities, because there are more activities than can be accomplished. (If the class time consists of three 50-minute sessions per week, and there are roughly 15 weeks per semester, the student doesn't benefit from these since most cannot be accomplished effectively due to time constraints.) If a few, rather than many, had been selected for the text, then not only could these be completed during class, but there would be more room in the text for other cultural passages.

Groundbreaking text in communicative Spanish teaching
The first edition of SQ blasted onto the market nearly 10 years ago and broke ALL the rules. It's a gutsy, interesting book that does what most other first year Spanish textbooks fail to do - gets you students using and understanding Spanish from the beginning of the school year! It is not easy to teach from Sabias que - you're going to have to work as hard as your students are, but the rewards will be amazing! This is not a teach-yourself Spanish text. It is meant for classroom use.

A great book for college teachers but not secondary ones.
I used this book for a graduate level course on Foreign Language Teaching Methodology given by my school district. I am a secondary level French teacher. The theories of instruction that this book explores are very enlightening, however the practical examples it offers are more suitable for university level instruction. My biggest complaint with this text is that the examples of communicative language teaching methods it offers are in English and are too vague to lend themselves to practical application. One is left wanting more specifics than the examples give, especially when the text advocates such activities as "brainstorming" or group input activities. For example, how can one brainstorm in the target language when that is precisely what one is trying to teach? I made lots of notes in my copy of the text, but I have not had success in applying what I've learned in my classroom.

Useful for new students of second language acquisition
I read this as a master's candidate in a TESL in Washington, DC. I found it relatively easy to read. Still, it's academically written and focuses on theories and research done on second language acquisition. Topics covered include grammar in communicative language, speaking, reading and writing. This book is for those who want to take a step forward into academia and research in teaching methodology.

Little to learn from this book
Aside from personally destroying potential evidence in the Oswald case--a note from Oswald in November 1963 that could have shed light on Oswald's frame of mind around the time of the assassination--what does Hosty know to increase our understanding of the JFK assassination? He knows nothing about the real nature of Oswald's activities in New Orleans in 1963--events leading up to the assassination. He knows nothing about the possible role of the USG in the assassination. Forget about Cuba or Russia's role in the assassination events. Could they have switched key frames in the Zapruder film for the use of the Warren Commission? Hoover himself admitted to the FBI's role in this "mistake." Did the Cubans or Russians hide information from the Warren Commission? No, Allen Dulles did so. Did the Cubans or Russians manipulate the writing of the Warren Report? No, Gerald Ford admitted that he changed the language of the report regarding where one of the bullets struck Kennedy (making the report inaccurate but trying to force data into a preconceived notion). Try the books of Dick Russell or Jim Garrison or Gaeton Fonzi instead in order to gain understanding of the events of 1963.

An interesting read
Like I said in the title, it is an interesting read. Hosty deals with the assasination as he perceived it (and it was he who investigated Oswald). He also tries to brush off any conspiracy theories pertaining to the shooting, in particular Stone's "JFK". I must say he does a pretty good job at it, with his claims being solidly motivated. However, I still stubbornly choose to believe in the conspiracy.

A Candid Recounting of JFK Assassination
Hosty's book provides a candid recounting of the tragic events of Nov. 22, 1963. While Hosty acknowledges his own mistakes, he tries to put the president's assassination in proper context and explain what was really happening behind "closed doors." An exciting read, and a must read for buffs. Hosty's candid recounting will surely get under the skin of conspiracy theorists.

The Worst Language Textbook I Ever Had
I am taking the beginner Spanish class using this textbook. The textbook is not suitable for beginner especially those who do not have any Spanish before. I speak four languages before Spanish and two of them I learned from textbooks. This textbook is waste of money and time for me. It does not explain the fine and important part of the language - grammer and structure of the language. The exercises do not help you understand unexplained grammer and structure of the language. I give it one star because of its colorful pictures.
