some helps
I am a photographer who lives in Iran. I'm so glad that finally could find somthing about my most favorite photographer Mr. Lee Friedlander in amazon web site.

BEAUTY BEFORE CAMERAS
The majority of celebrated modern photography of the female nude smacks of the conceit of light games. Worse: most of the best-reviewed contemporary works are, if truth were told, more about camera technology than aesthetics. It often seems as if the riptide of post-feminism has rid us of the privilege of inventive eroticism and made eunuchs of photographers and harlots of models. Can the aficionado really bear another misty-lensed Caribbean superwaif or mottled, breastless sub-celebrity? Helmut Newton has taken the daring of Blumenfeld, Man Ray and Edward Weston and spiked it with humor, but Lee Friedlander, in his innocence and directness is - ironically - closer to the wake-up call of Maplethorpe. These are beautiful photographs of real women in real, average rooms, carved with basic flashguns and noonlight, much in the informal style the French Symbolist Pierre Louys (who also used domestic settings and natural light). Texturally they come closest to Weston: the monochrome has his luxurious, colorful feel. But architecturally the pictures recall Georgia O'Keeffe in their adventurous embrace of hip sweeps and knee bends tight-cropped like zoomshots of winderness outcrops. The women are hairy, fragrant and alive. What warms the heart most is the reality of their expressions: self-possessed, agitated, engrossed, bored, antsy - by turns. These are real women, monumental in their personalities, as in their natural curves and caves. Madonna, now pop legend, was one of Friedlander's early models and it is moving, almost disturbing, to see unaffected beauty before the jazzy conceptual tricks of consumerism. Lee Friedlander's work isn't confined to nudes: seek out his other provocative portfolios.

Beautiful essence of real women
Friedlander exquisitely captures the true essence of real women. These women, usually photographed in their own apartments, are not models -- they are authentic. Friedlander's work shows every blemish, hair, and "imperfection", which made this reader almost feel as if I could hear them breathing, smell their skin. To see such a beautiful work with wonderful women who did not see the necessity of applying thick layers of makeup, shaving body hair, or wearing excessive jewelry was truly refreshing. Thank you Mr. Friedlander for "exposing" what women really look like!

California "Tar Heel" Longs for N. C. Home
If this book of short stories does not make a former Tar Heel homesick, then I have not a clue as to what would... it made me want to go home immediately. The stories are funny, sad, and range in levels from wonderful to great. A librarian friend gave me this book and it is one of the best gifts I have ever received. I plan to purchase several to give as gifts. My home is now in California, but my heart will always be down home in North Carolina.

Great for giving.......just TRY hanging on to your own copy!
I'm ordering what must be my fourth or fifth copy of this terrific little book. It's a comforting, warm, fuzzy, and sometimes funny set of recollections sure to regenerate the reader's own rememberances of home. I try to keep a copy beside the bed in my guest room, but alas, my guests are always so taken with what they've read before turning out the light that I always have to say "Just take my copy along with you. I'll get another." I've also given it to friends in the process of fighting terrible illnesses. They find peace in the authors' accounts, conjuring up their own memories of home.

Useful and Fun for Anyone Who Loves Children's Books.
I am an Elementary School Librarian and I LOVE this calendar! It has great illustrations from many well-loved children's books. I also like that it notes the birthdays of authors and illustrators. This calendar is a great resource for librarians and teachers. Also, it's a lot of fun with bright and beautiful illustrations for anyone! The calendar grid is also a nice size with plenty of room to note appointments or whatever.

About Time, indeed!
It's somewhat surprising, given the tremendous number of jazz biographies published in the last thirty years or so, that is it took so long for a definitive tome about the life of one of the most popular jazz musicians of all time. There are, perhaps, many reasons why this is so. Firstly, Bru has always been a bit hard to categorize; "serious" jazz musicians have been known to eschew his music as too "pop," too hook-oriented; others (this book included) point to his background in classical music as evidence of an artist too singular to sit comfortably aside many of his contemporaries (stylistically, he borders more often on Ravel than, say, Miles Davis). Another reason why perhaps it took so long for this book to appear is that, as compared to many of his contemporaries in the West Coast Jazz scene, Bru's life was relatively tame; he didn't suffer from harrowing addictions, or spend time in prison. Brubeck's life was more that of a working musician and a family man. On the other hand, as this book clearly indicates, his life was anything but ordinary. Brubeck's Columbia recordings, featuring his trademark multiple-meter compositions, probably reached the ears of more Americans than any other jazz musician of his time. His frequent international travel brought him into contact with a wide range of musical styles and idioms, which he incorporated brilliantly into his music. Perhaps best of all, and a major focus of the latter part of this book, Bru raised a family of sons who have continued to build on his legacy, while forging jazz voices of their own. "It's About Time" chronicles the height of Bru's popularity in the 50's and 60's, follows through with his experimental forays into classical music in the 70's, and generally presents a well-rounded portrait of an artist who reflected the optimism of his generation. It features a much-appreciated - and comprehensive - discography of Bru's recordings, and a reasonable amount of analysis of Bru's artistry. If there's anything I'd have liked more of, it would be more discussion of Brubeck's artistic process, and a more in-depth analysis of his compositions. Perhaps that's the next book that needs to be written. I would recommend this book very highly to fans of Dave Brubeck. To those less familiar with his work, I'd say, buy a copy of "Time Out," "Time Further Out," and "Time in Outer Space" first - then, read the book.

A must read for every one - literally
First of all, this is a great book. Reading this book is like chating with an old uncle talking about his life. He is not a hero by any means, but an ordinary hard-working family man, who is politically naive like most of us. Yet his two-year ordeal involve extraordinary heros (e.g Judge Parker) and shameless villains.

The Wen Ho Lee case is a classical example of power-abuse by those individuals who work in the government. The government prosecuted Dr Lee in the name of "national security". However, the national security was badly damaged during this long and painful trial, by those people with power. Millions of dollars of tax-payers money was wasted. Credibility of FBI and the counter-intelligence officers was damaged. Real spies like Robert Hanson escaped or have been overlooked for 20+ years. And most of all, the terrorists had successfully launched their deadly attack against the nation on Sept 11th right under FBI's nose.

To me, it's those government officials that we need to be careful for the potential damage of our national security, as well as the civil rights of each individual citizen.

It couldn't happen here.
This was the first book I've read in a long time that I couldn't put down. I completed it in two sittings. It is very disturbing to me that an ordinary American citizen can be incarcerated for 278 days and never have committed a crime. This book decribes Dr. Lee's view of what happened and how. The local FBI had determined that there was no evidence to suggest that Dr. Lee might be a spy, but the DOE persisted. His description of solitary confinement is upsetting and frightening. It's enlightening and terrifying, but at the same time, it creates respect for the American legal system and the lawyers who fight for justice.

We the People...
I was anxious to read this book. Here my government, meant to serve and protect me, was using the very laws to do that to punish someone because he fit a racial-profiling matrix. I am not denying Dr Lee committed a security infraction, but other government officials have committed worse errors without punishment. I am floored (but not surprised) by the outrageous actions of our so called protectors. From the FBI to the White House, powers were completely, if not illegally, misused. This was nothing more than a present day witch hunt. Unfortunately, Dr. Lee was the supposed "witch." As I am in the computer industry, I completely understand Dr Lee's purpose of making backups and backups of your backups. The way the FBI, congressman, senators and others twisted the facts in this case should make every American concerned.

Foundations of Behavioral Research
Foundations of Behavioral Research by Kerlinger and Lee is one of my prescribed books, for a Research course that I am taking, as part of a Masters program.

In the course of working through the book, we (my fellow students and I), have encountered a large number of spelling, grammatical and even content errors. The book needs careful reading and editing.

However, the book has a lot to offer if you can look beyond the flaws mentioned above.

One of a kind
There are very few books written that covers as many important topics in behavioral research methods as this one. Earlier editions were outstanding and the fourth edition is exceptional. The new material in the 4th Edition is helpful to today's researcher. Both researcher and student doing research should have this book. The examples are extremely useful in facilitating the understanding of research methods and the analysis of data.

Kerlinger is the Behavioral Research Bible
This volume includes everything a student or professional researcher needs to know about the methods and principles of behavioral research. This comprehensive guide can be used for work in psychology, nursing, sociology, market research and other areas.

Essential for anybody interested in art
Short review: ... buy it. If it requires selling vital organs or loved ones to pay for it, it's worth it.

Long review: I enrolled in an Art History course with no idea what I was going to get as a textbook. This book is well-written, intelligent, informative without being overly esoteric, and above all beautiful. The prints are generally in color and always well-reproduced. Historical context is always provided, which gives a solid background for anybody looking to learn about the time any artwork was created. The text also offers insightful commentary about each piece selected for display. This book is so good, in fact, that it's become known as the semi-official Art History 101 textbook. Even if the history's not your thing (and for crying out loud, why not?), the book provides untold hours of beauty.

One word: perfection.

Do yourself a favor - buy this book!
If you are taking an art history class and this book is a text for it - buy it!!! I borrowed it from a friend to save some money and now, I am sorry I did. I have graduated from college, but loved the art class so much, that I wish I had bought the book. I would love to look through it now. It is full of wonderful information - you can't go wrong!!!

the quintessential art history book there is
Despite 10 pound book up four flights of stairs at school, I found that this book is one of the most resourceful. There is a historical timeline that parallels goings on in the rest of the world that is very helpful so that you could get the gist of what's going on at the time. Also, in the text itself, it gives definitive explanations to what is happening at the time so that you can understand fully what the artist is saying or where he/she is coming from. For those who do not know classics, bibilical stories, and other things, there are also good explanations for those, so the reader/student is enlightened and erstwhile, in comprehension of the work. Absolutely the best resource when it comes to art history and the interpretation of art.
