Study Skills
Study skills sound sort of like learning strategies but I prefer the sound of the term "learning strategies." A skill is something you have or don't have. A strategy is something you do. This book is great for teaching kids how to do better in school. It presents the ideas in such a cool way with a story, activities, lesson plans, and even music. It is really a good book. Oh. The puppet is cute too.

learning strategies are a big help
Someone told me about this book and how it teaches kids learning strategies. It does it with a story to get their interest. I've been using the ideas in this book and they are a big help. It can help any kid but especially one with LD. The writer has a website with free stuff that helps a lot too.

From Thebookshelf.org
This story for students in grades K-3 includes sheet music for "The Lemonade Song", reading comprehension questions and associated activities to help young students enjoy learning. The story uses a clever analogy between lemons and children to illustrate how something that seems bad can become something that is very good. Bitter juice can be squeezed out of a lemon, and then sweet sugar can be added for a tasty treat. Likewise, bitterness and frustration can be squeezed out of children, and with "sweetness", patience and hope, a positive and successful outcome can be reached. She refers to hugs as "lemon squeezes," and unpleasant things as "sour." The strength of this book is in its application as a teaching tool.

love the rhythm and art work
Ten thousand white horses go racing to shore,
ten thousand white horses and more.

Ten thousand white horses go bolting to shore,
ten thousand white horses and more.

Lines like this are sprinkled throught the book.
The action changes from racing to rushing to
thundering to bolting and so forth as that same
line is repeated. The story is told in a galloping
rhythm that kids love.

The art work is great. They are the kinds of pictures
that you can look at again and again and see more details
that you missed the first times.

My kids and I love the way it is written and the art work!

better than it looks
I bought this at a store instead of at amazon.
The picture here doesn't show the quality of the art work very well. At least it doesn't on my computer. The art work is great. The color is a warm ocean blue. I'm excited about reading this to the kids when we go to the beach this summer. It is a wonderful story that kids love to hear again and again. They love to look at the details in the pictures. The writer and artist did a great job. I just wish the pictures showed up better on my computer. It is much better than it looks here.

Fun to read and fun to hear
I enjoy this delightful tale as much as my daughter does.
It is fun to read it out loud to her. I can really caught up in the action of catching a wave and riding it to shore. The language catches the feeling of the galloping horses. My daughter and I love horses and we love this book.

It would make a great Christmas present to anyone who loves horses.

great set of books
These stories are clever and easy to read. There are four books in the series. A Funny Dolch Word Book 1, 2, 3, and Albert the Apple Eating Appaloosa. Almost all of the words in the book are Dolch sight words. It is a great teaching tool. Our school will be using all four books for summer school instruction to help kids catch up. I don't have anything much to say that isn't already on this page about the books except to add my recommendation. Oh, the publisher's website is also very helpful.

independent reading
These inexpensive little books are great in helping develop independent reading skills. Like the last reviewer.... The newest one, Albert the apple eating appaloosa, has short horse stories which we love. It is funny too. The author's website, Learning Abilities Books, has excerpts from the books. Almost all of the words in the books are Dolch sight words. So they get to practice, practice, practice while enjoying the stories, poems, and fables. They don't feel like they are practicing. Mine really hate to read flash cards. Stories are much better. I guess it is like this: if you want to ride a bike, you need to get on one and experience it. This lets them experience the words. There enough words on each page that they aren't just guessing. But there are not too many words on a page. They really feel like they are accomplishing independence with these books!

get all four Dolch books by Lee
My daughter loves all four of the Dolch books by Betsy lee.
The first 3 books have A Funny Dolch Word Book in the title.
Her favorite (and my favorite) is ALbert the Apple Eating Appaloosa. We love horses and this is a really cool book.
She can read it now without any help. She is really reading the words, not guessing at pictures or saying the pages from memory.
She started with book one. That is the best place to start.
Then you should use book 2 then 3 then you are ready for Albert.
A funny Dolch Word Book #1 was the first book she could read without memorizing it or without guessing at pictures. It does not just have one or two words per page. It is a real story book. It does not have short choppy sentences. The sentences aren't very long but they sound like people really talk. It is really a great little book. Be sure to get all 4 of them!
My daughter is in first grade and these books have helped her a lot.

delightful
This is a collection of short stories about a lovable horse, children, a child's teacher, and adults. All ages enjoy the book. It is illustrated by photos. It helps people who need help learning to read better, but mainly it is an interesting collection of short horse stories. I recommend it highly.

get all four books
This is the fourth book in a series of Dolch books by Betsy B. Lee. All four are great. THis one has a collection of short funny horse stories. I guess the only non-Dolch work in the whole book is probably Albert and appaloosa. Big words like appaloosa and palomino don't bother kids especially if they love horses. Well the names of the people aren't Dolch words but they are easy names like Sarah and Linda. This book uses a lot of Dolch words with ed and s on them. Kids need to recognize these forms of the wrds too. Lee's other Dolch books are A Funny Dolch Word Book #1 and #2 and #3. All of these have a few word search puzzles as well. None of the words are backward or upside down.
I really like that. All four books are great!

very good
This is such a helpful book. I like the idea of fables written in easy to read words. They teach lessons and entertain. The stories make us laugh while we understand the mistakes being made in the stories. We can learn to laugh at our mistakes and learn to do better. These three books teach reading and they teach values.

Great little book
What a clever idea to use fables. So often, short stories for kids are kind of pointless. They are barely worth reading, but fables have had values which have lasted for centuries! These short stories are well worth reading over and over again.

This is titled "book 2" like for second grade but most teachers teach these words in first grade. I guess they mean that in second grade they should recognize the second grade words and earlier ones instantly, but they should know pre-primer through third grade by the time they finish first grade. That is, if they are going to read well.

Dolch words are words that must be recognized so that kids can become good readers. These words are found in almost every single book but some of them can't be sounded out like "is" sounds like "iz."

"Threw" sounds like "blue." Then you have "on" and "own" and so forth.

This has short delightful stories and fables using the words. It has all of the pre-primer through second grade words without using any words on more complicated levels.

It even has some word searches. The searches only use words which are right side up and they are NOT backward. We don't want kids to read backward so why encourage them to do it in word searches? I'm glad this writer thought of that.

A Great Book for Beginning Readers
My granddaughter is a beginning reader. I found this book to be a wonderful way for her to learn new words gradually. Once a new word was introduced, it is used throughout the book in other stories. It reminded me of the old Sally, Dick and Jane books that I read in first grade. My granddaughter's favorite story was the one entitled "Under the Can." She squealed with delight when she discovered what was "under the can." The "word find" exercises in the book were fun for my granddaughter also. They were a good way for her to practice finding and reading the new words she had learned in the book.

You need this book.
If your child isn't reading on grade level in third grade or older, you need this book. If your child is beyond the picture book age, you need this even more. Hey, it is even great for children or adults learning English as a second language.

Why is it great for older kids and adults? It has fables and other stories which appeal to all ages. Fables were first told to adults centuries ago. Now we think of them as picture books but we need to remember their lessons all of our lives like "united we stand" and other expressions that are part of our language. Also, it is great for older kids and adults because there are no pictures so they don't feel like the book is for little kids. The ages of the characters aren't told. Most of the characters are animals.

What a clever idea to use fables. So often, short stories for kids are kind of pointless. They are barely worth reading, but fables have values which have lasted for centuries! These short stories are well worth reading over and over again.

This is titled "book 3" like for third grade but most teachers teach these words in first grade. "Threw" sounds like "blue." Then you have "on" and "own" and so forth.

Like I said, if I were learning English for the first time, I would want this book and the other two books in this series (books 1 and 2).

This has short delightful stories and fables using the words. It has all of the pre-primer through third grade words without using any words on more complicated levels.

Beautiful words
I have to admit out loud that I am extremely prejudiced in my review of this book. Mrs. Colquitt taught me creative writing at TCU -- she actually had the nerve to give me a B simply because she said I was not writing up to my potential.

But this is not about me, it is all about her marvelous book. As a teacher, Mrs. Colquitt was self-effacing and understated in speaking of her experience and accomplishments. Others had to tell us that Isaac Bashevis Singer asked her to be his editor. She never would have brought the subject up.

Knowing that about her makes this book all the more moving.

Yet, even if you've never been to Fort Worth, or never had opportunity to hear her lecture, you will appreciate this book. The first half could be a modern midrash on Eve (and Lilith). Colquitt writes feminism the way she practices it -- gentle, assertive, intelligent, and kind.

The second half of the book tends to the more autobiographical. The final poem was for me gut-wrenching, as I honored and respected her husband, my math professor, for his unrelenting fairness and sense of humor. Dr. Colquitt died shortly after my own father died, and Mrs. Colquitt's vulnerability here is seldom duplicated.

EVE is serious, playful, and worth curling up next to the fireplace and reading aloud.

Solidly Informative
Fabled Service is solid proof of the importance of customer service supported by Sanders's experience with Nordstrom. Businesses strive for customer service, and Sanders provides useful and detailed explanations and strategies for how to attain the basic concept of excellent customer service. Fabled Service is as good as Michael Levine's Guerilla PR: Wired, which explains how to attain excellent public relations coverage in the modern age without busting the budget.

Best Money You Can Spend
If you are in business or are thinking about going into business, this book is a must. No matter what else you know or think you know, these core concepts are the keys to success. Real examples from real life with real meaning. And Betsy Sanders has a way of making it understandable and simple.

This book truly changed my personal & professional life
WOW! Betsy Sanders truly inspired me to delve deep into myself and fill page after page of ideas for customer service that had nothing to do with her industry...this book speaks to any industry or field. Because fabled service is so rarely experienced, but continuously sought after by businesses everywhere, this book is a must for any new hire, established executive or just the coordinator of a small volunteer organization. The essence of fabled service is the people, so hiring and retaining excellent employees is simply a must, as is recognizing their efforts, ideas and energies expended on your behalf. I applaud Betsy and her comprehensive collection of ideas, thoughts and direction to help others achieve true Fabled Service in their own lives!
