Now available in paperback!
This is an excellent book on deep sea exploration! If you can find it, the hardcover version is definitely a keeper for future reference. In response to the review above...I believe that "Deep-Ocean Journeys" by Cindy Lee Van Dover is the paperback version of "Octopus's Garden" ("Deep-Ocean" is still available in-print). Also, if you enjoyed this book, read William Broad's "The Universe Below".

great book on the deep sea
Too bad this book out of print! It is a neat little book on deep sea life, not just (but mainly) hydrothermal vent life. Very readable and while not too technical was very informative, with nice black and white illustrations. It added a very human touch to deep sea exploration, but was professional at the same time.

It is truly an amazing world beneath the surface of the sea, which by some counts makes up something like 97 percent of the biosphere of this planet. Great books help bring this alien but important realm to life. Recommended.

A brilliant book
There are fans, and there are FANS. And after paying several thousand dollars at a London auction house, a couple of years back, for the Gibson 345 guitar used by Alvin Lee at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival, Massachusetts-based long-time Ten Years After fan, Herb Staehr, has most definitely earned his place in that latter category. But he didn't stop there. For during the last few years Staehr has been meticulously marshalling his extensive collection of TYA and Alvin Lee memorabilia into the production of this mightily impressive book - to the best of my knowledge, the first one ever written about either this seminal British band or its brilliant guitarist frontman. It is - as its title implies - primarily a photographic history of the development of TYA, from its early sixties roots as a three-piece teenage band known as The Jaybirds, to its evolution into the four-piece stadium supergroup of thirty years ago. And what astonishing photographs there are. Staehr has not only unearthed literally scores of rare and previously unseen photos of the band in its glory years, but also fascinating images of the aforementioned pre-TYA Jaybirds. Following the break-up of the band in the mid-seventies, he has produced here a comprehensive catalogue of pictures detailing the development of Alvin Lee's solo career right up to the present day. Photos of the various TYA comebacks and reformations are also included, as well as images relating to the solo careers of other band members. So, if its photos you want, there will never be a better place to come, or a better book to buy. They include not only the examples listed above, but concert posters, album sleeves, ticket stubs, magazine covers - you name it, it's here. But Staehr has also provided a wealth of literary information too. There is a band biography, an impressively researched and massively detailed "concert chronology", album and gig reviews, extracts from interviews with band members and associates, all concluding with a comprehensive discography, a listing of T.V., film and video appearances, and finally an extensive biography. It goes without saying that this superb book is a "must buy" for all fans of Ten Years After and Alvin Lee. Yet its appeal should go wider than that. Anyone who was a fan of late sixties and early seventies blues-rock, or who counts themselves a member of the "Woodstock generation", or who just likes a darn good rock and roll read, will find themselves glad they purchased this book. No band rocked the blues like Ten Years After. No-one has recorded and written about that fact as well as Herb Staehr has done here.

Fantastic - But what about the second part?
All I can say about this book is that it is fantastic - The artwork is great, the storyline builds up well with some good action, but here's the problem: It ends on an almighty cliffhanger and the sequel is no longer available. I would give this book 5 stars except I don't know how the story ends... :-(

I agree
I agree with the other reviewer on just about everything, and I just want to add this. The darkness of the work is because the villians are vampires and can't do out in sunlight; but, except for that, they don't seem very horrific. I mean their evil and turn everybody into vampires or use them for food etc.; but none of it is shown and I didn't really get a feeling of them being any different from any other baddie out to take over the world. I'm hoping this is all because of story exposition and plot development, and it'll be made clearer in upcoming editions. That said..It was interesting, holds promise, and I give it 4*.

Something new
Volume 1 introduces readers to the land of Warlands by introducing a great story and unbelievable artwork. The story is different type, but not hard to follow since it uses a lot of elements from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The cast of characters is brought together well, and the Darklyte story is a setting for other Warlands events that happen down the road. Most action is in Volume 2, but this is still worth the money, especially if readers are tired of the typical superhero books. Highly reccomend this one

Gripping story-line. A fantastic read!
Alvin So is one freakin' genius churnin' out good tome after good tome. The hits just keep on comin', I tell you what...Actually I didn't really read this book but couldn't resist the temptation to be the first reviewer of something and because I like some of his other work I figured I'd give it the good ol' fashioned plug. Way to go So!

Kennings and the Christian Context
The book is divided into two major sections.

The first section's greatest contribution is its perspective on individual Old English words. If you are intrigued by kennings, then there are two or three interesting chapters in this book which seem to offer a novel treatment of the subject. This work has a comprehensive bibliography and seems solidly based in text.

The Christian context, in structure, language, character, etc. is the overarching theme of the second half of the book, which is divided into chapter length essays. This section would be most useful to someone investigating the pagan/Christian juxtaposition in Beowulf. At times I disagreed with various points/premises, but the overall argument was compelling.

Grab some toothpicks
If you like to grab a book and take a nap shortly after opening it, this is the book for you. It starts out keeping your interest, but will quickly loose it. If you are looking for a book that really lets you meet York (which was what I was looking for), this is not the right book. This book is a wealth of information, but you will get easily dis-interested, lost, and confused as the author goes into great depths to introduce the men that were involved in York's struggles after the war. I was hoping for a book about York and his family, but was disappointed in this one. He gives very little information about York's family life.

Riveting!
A valuable look at York the man, the times he lived in, and the process of creating a national legend. Distinguishes the myths of York's life from the simple facts of his famous exploits. I especially enjoyed the look back at York's rural background and how those values shaped him as a man as well as an American heroic ideal. WEll-researched and documented, but also simply a good read!

Wolverine/Punisher: Revelation

Flat writing and lousy artwork
The Punisher has always been a one dimensional character, here he is turned into a character who looks like somethin borrowed from the Buffy tv show. Anyway, this is a story of the Punisher and Wolverine trying to save a young mutant girl whose powers are slowly destroying her. The plot is right out of the daytime soaps, which doesn't add too much, and the artwork is horrid. Needless to say this new version of the Punisher was changed back when Garth Ennis took over the stories.

Characters brought back to life!!
New York is dying. There is an underground threat that kills dozens of citizens by the minute. After the resurrection of Frank Castle (the Punisher), he swore to protect someone. Both he and the feral bone-claw Wolverine lose somebody special due to this same underground threat.

So, they team up. And together, they will find the cause of this mystery to put an end to it. But the task at hand appears to be much harder than anticipated.

The story is okay and is mostly about morals and innocence. The writing is very good, especially the monologues. And the colouring by Angelo Tsang and Pat Lee is excellent. They look like still images of some Manga animated fest, but drawn by Marvel. This is one of the few books that really made the images animate in my mind. Logan is drawn kinda weird though, but that didn't spoil the beauty of the colouring.

The characters make this a winner. All characters are given alot of depth. Especially Frank Castle, who seemed very flat and linear before. I especially love the first chapter. Wolverine's narration is great in that one. Highly recommended!

What a revelation!
I do not know much about the Marvel Universe, but this book will appeal to all. It is interesting to see the Punisher as a honest-to goodness hero for once. The heroine, Revelation, is one of the most original characters produced for a limited series. Revelation is a mutant who, after being released from a cyrogenic chamber deep under New York, begins to affect them with a virus which emits from her. Wolverine and the Punisher must try to find a way to stop Revelation before she reaches the surface. It is interesting to see how Wolverine and the Punisher get along as a team. The strange things about the Punisher are the weapons that he uses. I just don't get how angels can make guns in Heaven. When you read this book, you may notice some references to the Bible.

Fails on all fronts
The explication of the science is a failure. The ecology is poorly treated and the implications for evolution are under-addressed.

As a piece of science-journalism it fails to ignite. The author spends too much time dwelling on her own success at becoming the first female pilot of deep-sea vessel, Alvin. She forgets the "gee-whiz factor" which is necessary for a book of this type.

This is the only book I've given away in over 35 years. No strings attached.

a wonderful adventure for oceanography fans
In Deep Ocean Journeys, Cindy Lee Van Dover shares her love of the ocean and her fascination with the deep diving exploration that is revealing a truly remarkable dimension of this planet. Van Dover has invested a major part of her life in deep diving ventures and the rigorous laboratory research that increases our intrique with the mysteries of life in territory seemingly alien beyond hope for life forms. This charming book lets us go into the abyss with Cindy Lee, peer out into the darkness illuminated by the research submersible Alvin's lights, and gaze at hot vents pouring out water that would be steam were it not for the intense pressure of the great deep...we see colonies of giant tube worms living without the benefit of photosynthesis and have to open our minds to new possibilities for living organisms. This little book is beautifully illustrated and written with an open and friendly voice. It is a winner to those of us who want to let our imaginations open doors. I love Deep Ocean Journeys and have used it with students. Readers might do well to consider it as a present for young, would be scientists. The oceans offer major opportunities for discovery that should attract those who want to be a part of cutting edge research! Thank you Cindy Lee Van Dover
