Great Book that covers History
now this is the kind of Book that I call must reading because it covers a Form of Music&the People that molded&brought it to Life in a Rich Classy way.it explores so many areas&brings it all back to home without missing a beat.this Book is a History Lesson on so many things.Jazz is a Wide range topic all onto itself&this Book Explores that&so much more.

Thorough and Enjoyable!
This textbook covers basically all aspects of jazz. From the music's multi-cultured roots to the swing revival and every era in between, Jazz: The First Century presents a comprehensive timeline of ground breaking musicians(famous and obscure), and their most memorable compositions and recordings. The book shows how history influenced jazz, and likewise how jazz influenced history. It brings alive the original brass bands in New Orleans; the heyday of the prohibition years in Chicago, including Joe "King" Oliver's band showcasing Louis Armstrong on cornet; the development of styles such as swing, bebop, and fusion; and the rest of the world's interpretations of the music that grew up in America. I recommend this book to jazz enthusiasts who want a biography of the music, musicians who need a reference to classic jazz recordings, or anyone even remotely interested in recent music history. Did I mention that there is a list of key jazz albums? Also, a great index and many images!

Excellent Book
I am totally impressed with this book. It has enough (but not too much) information to set up a desktop or network and is very lucid and well written. In addition, the examples are specific and realistic. For a computer book, that is almost unheard of. I strongly recommend this book to people who are familiar with Windows but want to get started in Linux.

Chapters on setting up a small LAN are great
I'm an IT professional working predominately with Microsoft products- but I've always played around with my Linux & Mac machines. If you're tech-savvy (but not a Linux guru) & want to set up a heterogenous LAN centered on a RedHat server, then this book is invaluable. A+ to the author for keeping all the code on the companion site up to date as well. Haven't really read many of the other chapters but they look like a solid general intro into the RedHat world. Nice job

Superb work of reference
This concise medical dictionary is not concise at all: it gives all the information one needs, accompanied by very clear and informative drawings and pictures and it even gives the reader the correct pronunciation of the word. The alphabet tags on the side of the book (they give the first two letters of the words on that page rather than only the first letter) are a major help for a quick reference.

I am "only" a biomedical scientist and not an M.D., but this book is very important in my daily work to understand all those sometimes hopelessly complicated medical terms that I encounter in articles and correspondence. I can imagine that this book can also be very useful for M.D.s en medical students to look up the terms they do not encounter every day.

Great book.
It's all you'll every need. Trust me.

A descendant of John Lathrop
Hi all, I don't know how much relevance you can put on this review as I am a direct descendant of The Reverend John Lathrop so my opinion is obviously biased. Having said that I found the book very informative as to the history of this man. It also inspired a new interest in me for the Puritan movement and the early settlers of this country. I know that anyone interested in this reknowned family will not be disappointed in this well researched book. Wood Lathrop

Good for Newbies
I liked this book. It covers a lot of the Linux basics that many of the others WON'T cover. What I didn't like is a 98 page section on modem compatibility. This info is available on the web and those pages could have been used for something else. On the whole, the book is good for beginners who have no experience with setting up a Linux desktop in KDE or Gnome (bear in mind, this desktop setup is mostly geared to asthetics) and I enjoyed reading it.

Great Book
The best way to describe this book is that the author speaks to you! hes funny too! I like this book alot.

great so far
I have an AMS Roadster that gave me problems when installing red hat 6.2. I know that the red hat cd I had was good because it worked for my desktop. Knowing that laptops can be a struggle I got this book, one because it already had a good rating, and two, it comes with 4 versions of Linux! I had already tried the cumbersome method of downloading it off the net (just my opinion). I've already got the Caldera up and installed in one hour and all of the author's directions worked like a recipe book! I don't think this is as extensive of a book on linux as is readily available, but it seems to be the best book for the win 32 user that's trying to get up and running.

A must for every music business reference library!!
THIS BUSINESS OF MUSIC is the main choice of reference in my music
business library. Thanks to the straight facts, wisdom and intuity
that is contained within this book, I have successfully executed a
sub-pub deal with Warner Chappell Music. I recently updated to the 8th
edition in order to acquire the cd - rom. The cross-platform cd - rom
is a wonderful music business tool. I can effortlessly strip out, and
then personalize, the updated forms and contracts contained within the
revised 8th edition (on both my Apple and my IBM computer)! I am now
working on an artist/producer contract within the guidelines and
instructions contained in THIS BUSINESS OF MUSIC. If you can find it;
MORE ABOUT THIS BUSINESS OF MUSIC by the same authors completes the
set!

another boring music business book - it's good though!!
ZZZZZZZZzzzzzz... This book is like "This Business of Music." It's full fo great info, but it's really, really, really boring. This is something you'd read in a college classroom. I think most musicians would be better off getting some of the newer music business books that are out now which concentrate more on getting out there, making a name for yourself, and making money. Get a few bucks together and go buy the Indie Bible by David Wimble to get some contacts going, get How I Make $100,000 in Music by David Hooper to show you how business people think and how to increase your income playing music, and get Buzz Your MP3 to help get your online promotion together. These are all quick reads with really good info and no filler. Once you have read them, come back for this one. You'll understand it a lot better.

The best business industry book. Period.
If you want dtailed information on all aspects the music industry, then this is the book you want. It's packed with everything you would need to know, and now it even comes with a CD ROM with contracts and forms, at no extra cost. If you just want fluff that covers only a few areas of the industry that reads like a Harry Potter book, then there are plenty of other books out there for that.

The story of a man's fight to be true to his conscience
This book is the story of John Lathrop, an early English non-conformist, and his fight for religious freedom.

Accounts of people like William Tyndale, John Wycliff and other similar champions of Christianity and freedom are hard to come by these days. Foxe's Book of Martyrs and other similar works contain thumbnail sketches of these champions of religious liberty that had so much to do with the establishment of America. There are extensive scholarly works on some of these figures. But it is difficult to find a popular work that has sufficient depth to really understand the struggles that these people went through to establish religious liberty as a tenet of Western Civilization.

This book fills in this gap. It is the story of an English Minister who is forced into exile because his conscience will not allow him to agree completely with his church.

It is historical and derived from primary sources, but is told in a conversational style much like that of Alan Eckert in his early American historical works. This form of writing flows smoother and is more appealing to someone looking for a good story in addition to learning more information on historical figures and periods.

As an American, I found it particularly interesting as it documented the history of a representative figure who fled the Old World for the New to find religious liberty.

I recommend it for adolescents and adults who would appreciate learning more of this early American immigrant and the causes that led to so many similar immigrants coming to America. The genealogy list of descendants of John Lathrop notes that over half of the 43 Presidents of the United States were (and are since GWB is also related) related to this man.
