Book two of a four part journey
Ish was the Traveller, but he became a Farmer and Grower. He learnt how to grow all the crops he needed to feed Hagar, himself and all the animals. His flocks have grown and prospered, and his pack has grown. He is happy, but it is not to last. Ish is soon a Traveller once more, and he is moving beyond the blasted desert of the Whytkatto. Escaping from hot violent clouds of smoke and ash from an active volcano, Ish mets Taur - the Bull Man. Taur is a stranger, but it soon seems that there has never been anyone but Ish and Taur together.

I have been waiting for the last book in the series to come out before writing this review. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this series, and I think that this is the best book in the series (including the final book in the series "Kalik"). Ish is a character who meets all the challenges in his life and rolls with the punches. He makes friends wherever he goes and tries to make a new life where he can.

If you want to have some fun with this book, take a map of New Zealand and the map at the front of the book and compare them. Jack Lasenby has done a great job of turning the New Zealand of now into the world of the future.

Taur by Jack Lasenby
Imagine our world in the future, but without spaceships and aliens you often read about. This book follows the tale of Ish who is fleeing from 'Squint-Face' and his 'salt men' who want their 'god', the green stone dolphin, which Ish has stolen and wears around his neck. Ish loses his family and loved ones to the salt men, then embarks on a trek to the place where the North and South Lands divide. He arrives with Taur, a man who cannot speak. They share knowledge on how to survive in the hostile environment. Ozone-depletion causes the sun in summer and winter to be at two extremes. Forests are reduced to burnt stumps while another ice age is forming. It is obvious that Lasenby has done his research. The pair, after a spectacular battle with the salt men who follow them relentlessly, arrive at the South Land after a hazardous ride on an iceberg. This is a well told story full of twists and turns, sudden setbacks and incredible recoveries. High adventure at its best. Some action is explicitly told, yet remains in context. For either young adults or adults, you will enjoy this memorable tale.

I found this book really enjoyable
I got this book out of the school library. The story is about horse named after the title of the book and a man who is a deer culler. The man and the horse become good friends.

Tall tales and belly laughs
i have witnessed numerous boys leap into literature around the age of 8 because the wily Harry Wakatipu is a repugnant and cunning pack horse and there is no end to the nonsense. A child reader can easily believe this wily quadroped made flippers out of roofing iron and a snorkle out of a rifle barrel so that he could teach himself to dive and poach trout in some of the most isolated and beautiful bush in the world. The deer culler suffers in the presence of the lazy liar who should be a friend in the wilderness. For those who love tricksters and fiends, pick it up and share it.

A New Zealand author who will blow you out of the water
Ish should have been left behind when he was born. His mother died in the birthing, and the rest of the Travellers were going to move on without out him, but Rose would not leave him behind. Years later he is a young man whose father is the leader of the Travellers. But things are changing, and a new leader is taking charge - a leader who does not want a cripple in the family. Ejected from the Travellers Ish is left to fend for himself, but this boy is destined to become a man, and he already shows great courage. This is an incredible book that is the start of a series that keeps getting better with each book. Even if you don't know anything about New Zealand, maps in the front of each book help you figure out where the story is located and where it is moving to.

The Shaman and the Droll

The third book of a phenomenal New Zealand series
Ish has escaped from the cruel Salt Men of the North Land, but his adventures are far from over. When he finds himself in the Land of the White Bear that Ate the Sun, Ish can only think of surviving. Rescued by the Shaman, Ish learns that there is more to life than he ever guessed. As he learns to heal the people who come to the Shaman for help, Ish learns to love the icy and wind blasted land where he lives. But what is "the giving of knowledge" and why does the old Shaman not want to talk about it? The author has been travelling from strength to strength with his writings, and this is the best book so far. I can't want for Jack Lasenby to write another book in this series. This is one of those great books that is hard to put down, and I had to read it in one sitting because I didn't want to miss anything.
