Big Red Apple doesn't fall far from the tree
Delightful glimpse into Rose's life away from home and adds another layer of complexity to the bossy sister-struggling teacher-go to it gal in the form of Eliza Jane. I don't doubt for a minute most of this volume is true to word, especially the emergence of Rose's feminist/socialist values.

Fun for kids, equally interesting to this adult.

Charming Story
This book is excelent. Its a great addition to the Rose years. I think this story is quite interesting and it shows how difficult growing up is , no matter what time in history! Its a book girls can relate to and its also very pleasant to read.

An excelent book
On the Banks of the Bayou is a wonderful story of Laura Ingalls Wilder's daughter, Rose, who leaves her home in the Ozarks to finish high school in Louisiana. She stays with her Aunnt Eliza Jane. The city is full of excitment, and Rose discovers she is an independent women with stong hoppes and dreams.

Discovery of Freedom also charts course of Saracen Muslims
This book is also recommended reading for people interested in Islam and its effect on Arabs, namely that of freedom.

So give it a try.

Just read it.
I've been recommending this book for years. I keep several extras on my shelf to give away.

And, by the way...I'm a professional author, and I'm 'frugal'.

Enough said.

A must read book.
What a great book. The history of freedom around the world explained simply. The book explains why freedom works. This book is very entertaining.

If you agree with the views in the book, give it away to your elected officals. It is obvious they don't know or agree with it.

You can let them know about the book. Whether they agree with it is up to them.

POWERFUL experience-Give yourself the life you want now!
This book will take you on a 30 day exploration of your life and how you work it. Follow the directions in using the book and you will become aware of patterns and beliefs that run through your life. Liberating new approaches are discovered through this process. An Amazing book-very powerful!

We get to really see how we operate, then get to change it.
The simple, straight-forward approach of Dr. Lane's Money Workbook actually disguises its unusually powerful potential to transform. My initial "I already know this stuff" reaction was soon dissolved in the realization that it's not about "knowing;" it's about experiencing. Dr. Lane's daily exercises (30 in all) guide us through the experience of how we operate in our life, and then allow us to face that truth honestly, decide how we would like our life to be, and take steps to create it that way. This book is a no-nonsense guide that empowers us to create our lives in ways that work for us -- and it's fun, too.

The Art of Robert Bateman (An Allen Lane/Madison Press Book)

Author: Text Byramsey Derry Introduction by Roger Tory Paterson
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $25.00
Collectible price: $13.72

The Art of Robert Bateman is superb & endearing.
To see a Robert Bateman work is to glimpse a moment in Nature's time when an elk treks across a vast winter landscape of snow, conifers & mountains; or a stream bank where tender green plants glow against the moist earth & a minute bird perches; or a trumpeting bull elephant confronts you in a storm of dust. Roger Tory Peterson has written an expressive introduction & Ramsay Derry's profile of the artist makes good reading - especially as he's included a history of who Robert Bateman is; where he's lived; several works-in-progress sketches; photos of the artist in action & on location. A worthy addition to your library.

A beautiful book, simple recipes, and exquisite food
As serendipitous as a wildflower in the garden, the ideas behind the recipes take you in directions you might not have thought of. But once you read them, you know that they will work brilliantly. This is a REAL cook's book. It's a beautiful book. And it's also an utterly simple cookbook.

The not so Jolly Roger
I liked The not so Jolly Roger becuase it was a mystery and I love myseries. My favorite part was when Fred was reading a book and Fred got sucked into one of the pages. The not so Jolly roger could be better by taking out the part when a pirate shoots his mates after they got done buring the treasure they found. Iread the story becuase in the first book of the series, it was really interesting,so it made me think The not so Jolly Roger was going to be interesting.

"Buy it"!
I really like the Time Warp Trio series. My Grandma Kathy gave me books #1 through #10 for my birthday. So far, they have been very interesting and FUN to read! I am hoping that my younger brother and sister will enjoy them as much as I do.

The Not So Jolly Roger
We think the book, the Time Warp Trio The Not So Jolly Roger is funny and packed with adventure. In this story the three boys Joe,Fred, and Sam go in the magic book in the time of Black Beard the pirate. In the beginning they see a ship with three big cannons aimed right at them. The boys hurry up and climb coconut trees to escape. From the top they spy Black Beard on the ship.Trying to get down, they get stuck in the trees. After they get down from the trees, the three boys see Black Beard and his treasure. Two of the pirates were going to take it, but Black Beard saw them and shot them. Black Beard then thought the trio were going to try and steal his treasure.
Will the boys ever find the book and get home? If you want to find out, read this book.

Not an Original Work
This is an indirect copy of a fictional serial Rose wrote around 1918-1920: "Diverging Roads." It was republished by Roger Lea MacBride as "Rose Wilder Lane: Her Story," back in the 1970's. Unfortunately, it WASN'T her story: after giving the book that misleading title, MacBride explains in the introduction that many details were changed from Rose's real life. I compare this pitiful effort to William Holtz's staggering portrayal of Rose, and it is obvious which of these two men had more scholarly respect for Rose Wilder Lane. Even though I do not agree with many of Mr. Holtz's conclusions about Rose and her relationship with her mother, his work is fully researched, the information sound. The same cannot possibly be said about MacBride's attempts to pass off fiction as fact.

In the serial, here's what eventually happened to Helen (Rose's character): she doesn't marry, but joins forces with other women who are writers/journalists, and realizes that she wants a life of freedom and independence. That part was never published by MacBride, and I have often wondered why that was so. I personally don't understand why the "Rocky Ridge" series ended in such an adult fashion. MacBride could have concluded with Rose traveling to Kansas City to pursue a new career; Rose ended her book "Old Home Town" that way, with her character Ernestine (a young Rose in disguise) going off to business college to learn happily ever after. But no, it is much easier to copy Rose's original text than it is to come up with your own. Yes, I realize MacBride may have already passed on by the time this volume was approached, but anyone with background information on Rose and half an imagination could have finished the series with more success. Actually, that goes for the whole set of books, not just this one.

Interesting, but not as entertaining as the rest
Although I was interested to read about this part of Rose's life, this volume wasn't as well written as the rest of the series (it was published after Roger Lea McBride's death and may not have been fully completed by him). It reads a little strangely (especially because it is written at an easy-read level but covers an adult period of her life) and sadly ends fairly abruptly, too, at a major turning point for Rose.

To read more about Rose's life, try "West from Home : Letters of Laura Ingalls Wilder, San Francisco 1915," which tells you what Rose was doing nine years after the end of this book and how things turned out for her.

A wonderful end to a wonderful series
If anyone out there has hesitated to read the Rose Wilder Lane entries into the extended Little House family as they felt as I once did they would be pale copies of the original series, please don't hesitate any longer! This series has a voice of its own, and is very, very well written. I wish it was longer. I loved this last book. Rose is very different than Laura and in fact I think most women of her day. She is very strong willed and intelligent, and determined to make her own way in the world. I was especially struck by the descriptions of the early day of her life both in Kansas City and San Francisco---just how lonely and desolate life could be for a career girl starting out in those days, and how strong she was to persevere. Her growing awareness in this book that the life she always saw for herself---as a contented wife to Paul in a small world---is not really what she wants is very well done. The message sent to girls who might read this book is powerful. I also very much liked the way this series "grew up" like the original series. This last book is quite adult, though certainly not inappropriate for those who also read the early ones.
