Stunning look at a lost icon
Now gone, the Eliza furnaces of Jones and Laughlin once had a place on the Pittsburgh skyline. Prior to, and including their demolition, Mark Perrott snuck through the fences to record these pictures, which are some of the finest industrial photographs published in a long time. Some of the most moving photograph show the areas where men and women worked, and how ghostly those areas are when the workers have gone. In some photos, it looks almost like some sort of biological weapon or neutron bomb has killed off the workers; everything looks as though they just walked away, and the mill awaits their presence. But of course, they would never return, as the mill was turned into scrap, and probably fed into another company's steelmaking furnaces. Interspersed with interviews of some Eliza workers, this short book has a hard impact, showing the end of a mighty industry. Well worth it.

Its truth grips you from beginning to end!
At 2 a.m. this morning I finished reading this book, two days after starting it. Its detailed layout explained the facts and how they played out by the characters that were involved.

I had previously read Lane's book "Rush To Justice", many years ago, and because of it, I began to collect everything I could find regarding the JFK assassination. But somehow, I had missed "Plausible Denial" until I picked it up at a library.

Lane's presentation is phenomenally convincing. The incredibly, meticulous manner in which he explains how he legally exposed the roles that the key people played in the murder plot is astounding.

As he tells the story, the reader is able to analyze the characteristics of many persons who were in the background of E. Howard Hunt's involvement in arranging JFK's assassination for the CIA and higherups in this country.

The shocking reality that the book presents is that we have a government that is invisibly run by wealthy industrial and financial persons, who control the intelligence agencies for their benefit and order them to illegally and clandestinely remove leaders, worldwide, who try to free their people from U.S. control.

If it were not for courageous work by men like Mark Lane, who risk their lives to expose the secrets and tell the truth, life for Americans and others would be hopeless, especially for the young. This book should be in every school and home. It is a must read!!

At last, a conspiracy theory that names names!
For years, we have heard the reasons why JFK was assassinated by a faction or factions of the government. Influential people have posed questions about the plot or plots to cover up the truth about his death. Mark Lane's riviting explanation of the only trial linked to the JFK murder and it's subsequent subplots is a must read for any assassination buff. One of the base literatures for the Oliver Stone movie "JFK," the book footnotes the investigation by New Orlean's District Attorney Jim Garrison into the alledged conspiracy by tycoon Clay Shaw along with David Ferry, Lee Harvey Oswald and others. It also details the depositions of key government secret operatives, many of which play a later roll in United States history. Men like George Bush, G. Gordon Liddy and E. Howard Hunt. Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down, and it made me wonder would another anti-big government/anti-establishment leader in this country meet with the same fate?

Riveting, Disturbing and Educational Lawyer's Brief
On the one hand it is truly surprising this book by Mark Lane did not receive greater coverage. On the other hand, given the fact that official Washington has never deviated from its view that President Kennedy was murdered by Lee Harvey Oswald, the dearth of coverage was to be expected.

What makes this book special is that Mark Lane uses federal trial transcripts and deposition testimony to prove his point. That point is: the Central Intellligence Agency was complicit in the murder of President Kennedy.

I was unaware that Mark Lane is an experienced litigator who had criminal trial experience prior to JFK's murder in November 1963. In December 1963 he wrote an article which set forth a lawyer's defense for Lee Harvey Oswald. By that time Oswald was dead, having been murdered in the Dallas jailhouse two days after Kennedy was murdered. Lane pointed out one month after the assassination that a jury most likely would not have found Oswald guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Warren Commission and its 26 volumes went to greath length to show that Oswald was the lone assassin. Mark Lane's 1966 'Rush to Judgment' became the seminal work in disputing the lone assassin finding.

Perhaps 'Plausible Denial', coming almost 30 years after JFK's murder was old news. Whatever the reason this work has been sadly ignored. Mark Lane was defending a publication which had been sued by E. Howard Hunt for defamation. The publication maintained that E. Howard Hunt, veteran CIA operative and convicted Watergate burglar, was in Dallas on November 22, 1963.

Lane's book lays the groundwork to show that Hunt's contention he was in Washington, DC that is unprovable. Instead, Lane uses E. Howard Hunt's contradictory testimony under oath to show that nobody can say he was there.

Instead, Lane brings forth witnesses who cannot say he was in Washington DC and a witness who says she met him in Dallas just prior to Kennedy's murder.

Natually, there is much more to all this than E. Howard Hunt. What Lane shows the reader is that the whole matter of President Kennedy's murder is an issue which will never be truly resolved.

Great tool for getting the most out of Mark
Dr. Lane's commentary on Mark strikes an excellent balance between historical, theological, and practical issues. He also covers textual variants in the manuscript tradition. I found his brief appendix on the issue of Mark 16:9-20 to be very informative.

Lane also does well with sticking to the gospel of Mark while not diverting his attention to parallel passages in Matthew and Luke. He makes a compelling case for the dating and place of authorship of this gospel. His attention to the "difficult" areas of Mark is probably the highlight of this commentary. His concise and forceful arguments are not overly wordy while still being clearly expressed.

Good!
Good commentary, there is much you will learn from Lane's work. If you're studying Mark, this is a great book for you.

Not as good as orders to kill
This is a fairly good book but nothing like Orders to Kill by William Pepper which is much more detailed and conclusive in it's arguments. Thinking about it I guess these guys probably re-released to cash in on the time, effort and money that Pepper spent on the the case. Still it is much better than Posner so...

Hard to explain.
It was on this very day,33 years ago, that civil rights leader Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis. It was, obviously,an awful moment for America back then...but it's something people should never forget & something people should forever scrutinize, because there are some very strange things surrounding this particular murder,...

At first delvings, though, the King-Assassination-Case can very much seem totally undecipherable. If this is the case, all you need do is devour some really good books on the subject.

Mark Lane's "Murder In Memphis" is one of these books; expertly studied & addictively written with a smart sense of exploration. "Murder In Memphis" will astonish you. The interviews, the de-classified FBI documents, the end result-revelations of a Congress investigation into the matter, all pointing, basically,to a possible/probable Conspiracy involving the highest fractions of the U.S government, the top levels of American intelligence,& the deepest reaches of organized crime~(All seductively intertwined with each other). For me,One of the best pieces of information is the one concerning Myron Billit,a old gaffer for the Mafia, who claims that in early 1968 he drove two senior mob figures,Sam Giancana & John Roselli,to a meeting with federal agents at a motel in upstate New York. Billit says that at the meeting, the Mafia leaders were offered a million dollar contract to kill Martin Luther King-(Since Myron gave this info on his death-bed,it seems unlikely to be false).

Mark Lane has constructed a mindblowing book. Fascinating reading, well worth the investment. A publication i shall always appreciate.

Murder in Memphis
As it is a particular field of interest to me, I have probably read more about the trilogy of 1960's assassinations than most. Most conspiracy theories, however, involve a certain suspension of disbelief, and the reader, as investigator, must decide what they believe or not. Not so in Mark Lane and Dick Gregory's Murder in Memphis; without pointedly trying to be, their simple stating of the facts is the single most damning, disturbing, and convincing indictment of the FBI and others involved that I have ever read. Brilliantly written, the book is also meticulously researched; every source used is clearly identified and the reader gets the impression they could independently verify every statement made with relative ease. A non-stop page-turner from beginning to end; it is a must read for anyone who enjoys non-fiction.

The book that started it all
The facts were obvious, the absurdity of the Warren Report were flaglanty flaunted, yet many people still never got the truth of JFK's murder. Mark Lane does not offer any final conclusions. He only offers more than enough evidence for two claims; 1.) that if Oswald killed JFK, he couldn't have done so alone, and 2.) the Warren Commission was a scam, dedicated to finding only Oswald's guilt, more concerned with "healing an ailing nation" than with presenting the facts.

As a lawyer, Lane is well-versed in the procedures of court. He presents Oswald's case and the Commission's case with more evidence than you can shake a stick at. It would be difficult to fault Lane for telling it like it is, and it would be even harder to refute his claims. Lane was the man who busted the conspiracy wide open, and while making no deffinite judgments on exactly who perpetrated the conspiracy, he does make a solid case that there was one.

LAne was personally involved with the case, and this works to his advantage in that he had access to a lot of facts. Unfortunately, he has also suffered the attacks of the media, and thus at times becomes a tad defensive. However, this bias is hardly noticeable and in no way detracts from the evidence.

Oswald was innocent, the Warren Commission lied or didn't look for the truth. I urge every American to read this book.

It's a Must for Anyone who wants to know about JFK's murder
Maybe this book will not tell who pulled the trigger. But Mark Lane shows two very important things. First, Oswald COULDN'T have been involved in the assassination of President JFK. Secondly, he shows that there were more people who participated in the assassination of Pres JFK.

This book has the historical consequence that the Warren Commission can't be trusted. As a reader of the Warren Commission Volumes, I testify to the fact that that investigation was a joke. Mark Lane shows conclusively, the failure of investigating who the real murderers were, and their failure in explaining why Oswald was the "murderer".

The original conspiracy theory and still one of the best.
Mark Lane is an attorney who took it upon himself, in the weeks following the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and his alleged killer Lee Harvey Oswald, to represent Oswald's mother and widow and to try to find any information he could to exonerate Oswald of the president's murder. What he found out is the basis of what I would consider the "original conspiracy theory" -- that Oswald, even if he did pull the trigger, did not act alone in killing JFK. You may have seen Oliver Stone's movie or read one of any number of theories about JFK's murder, ranging from the simple and plausible to the wildly complex. What sets Rush to Judgment apart is that Mark Lane doesn't set forth a theory of who he thinks did kill JFK. He doesn't even say that he is 100 percent sure Oswald didn't do it. What he does posit is that the Warren Commission appointed by President Johnson to investigate the assassination was too quick to finger Oswald as the lone assassin and that its investigations were badly handled, including ignoring evidence and witnesses that could have cast doubt on Oswald's guilt. Another thing that sets this book apart is that it was written only two years after JFK's death, and Mark Lane was thus able to attend many of the Warren Commission hearings personally and to interview many of the witnesses himself. Thus, his conclusions are not based on third-party testimony or hearsay, nor are they influenced by the perspectives of history and the "government conspiracy craze." I urge anyone who is interested in American history, government and/or politics to read this book. It's well-written, not difficult to read, and interesting. Lane presents his information in a scholarly and non-inflammatory manner, even though his conclusions are a powerful indictment of some of the most respected figures in our history. I guarantee that Rush to Judgment will raise many questions in your mind.

I feel like a dummy for buying this book
I bought several books on learning the piano at the same time. I found this book to be the least useful. As several other reviewers mentioned, the author's sense of humor is pathetic and he tries to throw in a "zinger" every other paragraph. "Thats's right, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, pengiums and parakeets...". Believe me. I not exaggerating on this. I cringed at almost every one of the author's attempts to be humorous. However, this was not enough to discourage me from continuing to read the book. That occurred after having to read over 50 pages before the author presented the first exercise. An excercise that it does not use a middle C hand position, requires you to move your hand, does not indicate which fingers to use for which keys, etc. After looking at this first exercise, I decided not to continue. I suspect that the author has never taught a single piano lession.

I also picked up two books called "Total Piano" and "Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course" both of which I've found quite good so far. If you have a digital piano with a MIDI interface, check out "Teach Me Piano". I've been using it for a few days now, I can't say enough good things about this piece of software.

Good reference for ppl with music knowledge..not for dummies
I have some basic knowledge on Indian classical music. I wanted to learn Electronic Keyboard and hence chose the dummies book. The first few pages were great to learn the basics. Once I crossed chapter 4 I was lost. The important thing I wanted to know was the fingerings. There is no mentioning of extending the fingerings from the basic position. I would rather prefer a lesson & practice approach. When it comes to Music (instruments), the approach must be "build one block over other". Precisely a strong foundation. The Author must emphasise more on practice sessions and most importantly the recommended No. of hours for an average beginner to get hold of the piece. I am sure the book will be really useful if I know the basics of (piano) music or if I'm a student in a music school. Last word, very nice to learn basics, misses important aspect....Fingerings....

Could not put this book down!
I have been playing for only 6 months and am taking lessons and found this book a great help in learning about the piano. It is fun to read and has slot of very useful information and ways to remember things about the piano. Some interesting history behind the piano and ways to buy and maintain the piano. I have more pages in the book dog eared than any other piano book I have. You must get this book and the CD that comes with the book is a real help in learning timing and the way a song is to sound.

The Making of a Spiritual Movement: The Untold Story of Paul Twitchell and Eckankar

Lane's Smear Campaign
Research on David Lane reveals that he will attack any religion that comes close to the teachings of his beloved Charan Singh. Lane wrote this one 25 years ago as a college term paper, just after becoming a devotee of Singh. Naturally, since he believes his way to be the only way, anything coming close *must* be stolen from his precious master. His attacks on Eckankar are mild compared to his attacks on the various Indian branches of Sant Mat. This book does a grave disservice to anyone interested in seeking spiritual truth.

David Lane finally tells the truth
This book contains some enigmatic information about Eckankar and Paul Twitchell, the founder of this modern day religion.

Being that he is a Professor at a small California college, this book is generally considered to be a credible scholarly work.

In actuality it is his term paper written twenty years ago, as a twenty year old student.

On 12/28/2000 in postings to the alt.religion.eckankar newsgroup David Lane has finally admitted the truth about this paper.

Writing about his "own biases" he said:

"I agree that there are some slants and some interpretations of mine that cannot be so universally duplicated and those can become arguable points of contention.

First, THE MAKING was written NOT as a sociological treatise but as a 'critical expose'.

Second, I wrote the paper when I was an undergraduate in religious studies.

Third, I am NOT a member of ANY sociological association.

Fourth, I NEVER claimed that the MAKING was a sociological treatise.

I wrote the paper AS AN EXPOSE!"

By intention this book may be shocking to those that do not see that the conclusions he draws and assumptions he makes are just the beginning of his twenty year campaign to defame all religious teachings.

From Catholicism to small innocuous teachings like Eckankar, Professor Lane believes that all religious experience has no reality beyond the neural synaptic firings within the brain.

So this is not a serious work of research but a paper intended to provoke negative opinion about Eckankar. At that it is a compelling success.

David Lane is nothing short of a genius
I am a former student of Doctor Lane, and I consider the time I spent in his classroom as the most influencial experiece of my short life. I recently reread this piece, and I can honestly say it is testiment to my affirmation that he is a reveloutionary scholar in religious studies, and has pumped life into a dying field. Be warned, you will question your faith when studing his material, but what is faith when it is untested?
