Easy to read, hard to ignore
Max Landsberg succeeds in translating the essentials of coaching into a simple story and a few tables and graphics. It is easy to read, but once you've read it, the actual thinking begins. The somewhat unusual approach Landsberg takes introduces various aspects of coaching (such as receiving and giving feedback, overcoming coaching blocks) as elements of someone's career, providing the reader with instant examples.

I really learned a lot from this book and felt inspired.
The coaching techniques and examples provided in the book are outstanding. By applying these techniques to your everyday activities you will definately see a positive change.

Gave me the courage to try, with superior results
Placed in the leadership role for a high performance team undertaking a "McKinsey-ish" strategy study I found myself very challenged. Having spotted this book at an airport bookshop I read it on the plane. I put its suggestions into place, starting from the front of the book, and worked my way through the chapters as they were appropriate. I had it on my desk for the entire 4-month study. It bought immediate results for the team, and me by achieving greater cohesion of energy yet releasing greater diversity of thought especially during the inductive phase of the study. During the deductive stages it helped us focus on a team-based outcome without leaving people out of the decision-making process that had to be managed to a schedule. I firmly believe that without this book we would not have achieved the results we did - the pressure was intense and teams have a tendency to blow themselves apart after the final report is in. The team would not have continued to work as a coherent whole on subsequent phases of my study. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to lead a high performance team. Landsberg's@examples and his obvious experience come through well, and they gave me the courage to try what the book suggests with my team. Well worth the cost.

Highly Readable for any scientist
The authors (Bruce Malamud, Don Turcotte, and John Pelletier) should be congratulated on their clear exposition of this important subject. A more readable treatment of 'memory' in time series is not to be found.

Arguably, society supports geophysicists to tease apart the complex processes responsible for present and past geophysical phenomena in order to predict future events --and in the case of natural hazards (floods, climate change, sea level, earthquakes, asteroid impacts, etc.) to help mitigate their effects. To this end, geophysicists must first discriminate between the signal and the noise in their observations (data). This volume addresses this age-old requirement.

Very nice training manual
This is one the best books you can find to teach yourself how to train your cat. This book covers most of the problem behaviors that cat owners will face including improper elimination, aggression, scratching on furniture, et. This book goes into why cats behave that way and sets out simple and humane methods to correct problem behaviors.

An excellent book for dog owners and trainers
This user-friendly book offers both dog owners and trainers substantial information on understanding dog behavior. There is also a good chapter which covers how to teach one's puppy or dog a number of basic obedience commands, and which offers some great practical tips for dog owners who are looking for a humane method of controlling their dogs.

Concise review of clinical behavior
This book is an extremely useful book on several levels. For the veterinary general practioner, this is a handbook that lives up to the title; the information can be found quickly and easily. For the veterinarian who has an interest in clinical behavior, the book has a large amount of useful indepth information. For the scientist who want to know more about clinical behavior, this book contains an up to date state of the field (in the year it was published). And finally for the veterinary behaviorist, this book has much to offer as well. I highly recommend this book for all graduating veterinarians. If you are a veterinarian and you are only going to have one behavior book in your library, this is it.

Why this is an excellent book
Although more than 10 years old, this remains a firm favourite with many people as witnessed by the fact that it has been translated into both Russian and Japanese. The approach via problems and solutions is very helpful in this context.

A must-have for parents who love to read
I found this book (new) in a children's bookstore and it has been an invaluable reference in finding books for my two boys. I was an avid reader in childhood (and remain so) but Michele Landsberg has a more British/Canadian perspective and there are books I missed--all of which I am enjoying now, reading out loud. The only downside is that the book does highly recommend some books that were out of print when it was published which leads you into further out-of-print searches. I've had great luck with Amazon finding these books (also, check libraries everywhere you go, some make great vacation finds). Ms. Landsberg has no patience for treacly children's books and the quick reads sponsored by tv and movie fans. A reference for parents who love to read and wish to pass that gift onto their children.

Korea: Division, Reunification, and U.S. Foreign Policy

Show me the money
The author's conclusion that the Korean War and subsequent security alliance was purely economic from the U.S. standpoint. This ought to be easy to prove using pure numbers. In his 288 pages of diatribes, the author never once shows us 1. How much money is spent on the defense of Korea every year 2. How much economic benefit the U.S. gains from Korea in foreign mililitary sales and trade. Even if he could not prove that in 1953 there were leaders in the U.S. government who could predict the conditions that would exist in the future, it would lend some credibility to his weak theory. In a book such as this, the numbers need to support the conclusion.

Self Appointed Authority
I suppose anyone can spend a few weeks visiting Korea and suddenly decide that he or she is the next authority on Korea. The book attempts to explain the Korea situation entirely in terms of U.S. foreign policy. Unfortunately, something very important is missing from the analysis, namely Korea. Oh yes, the author glosses over the last 50 years of history on the peninsula but fails to address the underlying issues. For example, he mentions the two military coups that occurred in the previous century but never mentions what about the structure of the military and the government has made the country so vulnerable to coups. Worst of all, the books prejudicial views on Korea reflect nothing of the opinion of mainstream Korean society. Korea has a beautiful if not tragic history and culture. Speaking as someone who has lived in Korea for nearly four years (living, going to school, conducting research, and reading and listening to the news in Korean not English) I must honestly aver that this book is way off the mark of the opinion of the average Korean. Koreans today pride themselves in their country's ability to act as an equal partner with the U.S. (even if that was not the case 50 years ago). This book's disdainful portrayal of Korea is insulting to those of us who truly understand the country. I recommend this book to anyone who thinks they can spend a couple of weeks in another country (while not speaking the language) and become an instant expert on the subject. Good luck to you.

Free from Capitalist Propaganda
Perhaps more credit should be given to people who approach American foriegn policy with more objectivity than the average American. There are many Americans who are identified with their country on a psychological level and cannot allow any contradiction to what they were taught in school, or in the case of these reviewers, what military propaganda taught them. Marty Hart-Landsberg breaks the reader free from this psychological mold and pulls you into a more open-minded world. Granted, he is a socialist, and his views are represented disporportionally at times, the book still rings true. Why does America have any foriegn policy? Altruism is never the reason.
