Perfect book on one of first theorists of Turkish patriotism
This is a perfect and well detailed book about Munis Tekinalp "Tekinalp" (aka. Moise Cohen), one of the first and most important and influent theorists of the Turkish patriotism and Turkish identity along Ziya Gokalp and others, including large quotes from his works. In the book, his life is very well descripted as a very productive intellectual and writer at all of his long life, his thoughts on the Turkish Resurrection, his promotions and works on the behalf of the Turkish Renaissance. After the Proclamation of the Republic, Tekinalp took part of the reforms who leads to Westernisation of the Turkiye. As a enthusiastic supporter of the Ataturk's principles, he wrote one of most complete and consistent desciptions of these principles and he interpreted firstly by the frame of an ideology "Kemalism". He agreed and demostrated as a believing Jew, how valid the definition of a Turk : " Who feels Turk, is a Turk" whatever his religion, race or nationality. Thinking how different this definition at other "Civilised" countries , who relies it to the blood, race, or to born at a country, he showed well the invalidity of the continuous injustices, unfairnesses, and libelous propagandas against the presence of the Turks on the Worlds. He is a great Turk and patriot.

History of Pan-Turkist Journals
Reading this book was kind of disappointing. It's rather a rewiev of Pan-Turkist journals and magazines published thoroughout the history. The beginning of the book gives some facts about the origin of Pan-Turkism. The section about the flirtation of Pan-Turkists in Turkey (largely in the army) and the Nazis during the II.World War also presents some facts. The rest of the book is about which Pan-Turkist magazine was published by who and when and how long. If you'd like to know about Pan-Turkism, there are better books such as Top Hat, Gray Wolf, and the Crescent. If you don't have anything to read and if you are interested in the history of Turkey then you may want to read it.
Tedious voyage through fascinating country
It was with great delight that I read of Jacob Landau's book "Pan-Turkism: From Irredentism to Cooperation", and with anticipation that I ordered it. It seemed to promise a comprehensive look at a subject that had once, 35 years ago, appealed to me as exotic, but in today's changed, post-Soviet world, become immediate and apropos. Having read it, a job that unfortunately took a great deal of forbearance, I must report a certain reluctance to recommend this volume to any but the most dedicated of readers. For them, no doubt Landau's work will be very satisfying, for it is exhaustive, excellently-organized, and impressive in its knowledge. For students of modern Turkey or indeed of Pan-Turkism, this book may be indispensable, but for a more general reader with a strong, but not professional, interest in Turkish history and contemporary Turkish politics, culture, and society, I fear that Landau's book will prove too dense, too loaded with detail, and too packed with footnotes to provide any satisfaction. It is no doubt the premier work on its subject. However, a more readable work on this fascinating and pertinent aspect of 19th, 20th, and (I suspect) 21st century history must be awaited. Pan-Turkism has gone through phases--from the Balkan-style irredentism of Pan-Turkist writers in the late Ottoman and early Republic period, to a latent stage between roughly 1923 and 1943, and then to a growing resurgence of the ideas since. With the collapse of the Soviet system, which had "imprisoned" the bulk of the world's Turks outside Turkey itself, a whole new realm of possibility developed. Turkey's relationships with the five new Turkic nations of the Caucasus and Central Asia are still in the early stages. A future author may write a more readable book and simultaneously, bring us up to date on Pan-Turkism in the new, post-Cold War world. Cooperation may be the theme of the '90s, but as oil, politics, and ethno-nationalisms become more and more salient in the Middle East, Balkans, and Central Asia, Pan-Turkism will take its place as a topic of serious study for more than occasional specialists. Perhaps then a more readable book will be written.
