Best history lesson outside a classroom.
Look past the ditzy title of this novel and you'll find a painstakingly-researched, lovingly-detailed , fast-paced tale of a kingdom saved by a female warrior. I took this book with me on holiday and stayed cooped up in the hotel finishing it rather than go sightseeing. Yes, it's that involving. The book even launched me on a Joan of Arc pilgrimage to Rouen. Take the conspiracy theories with a grain of salt, have an unsurpassed read, and emerge to impress your friends with random details about 15th century France

The Silver Swan
The Silver Swan is part two of the 'Sutton Place' Trilogy. It follows the fated Weston family, this novel being set in England during the eighteenth century. It has its basis in fact.
Melior Mary Weston is the tragic heroine of this novel. She is beautiful and captures the hearts of many men- including the Jacobite Pretender to the throne of England. It involves many twists and turns to the story, and keeps the reader reader inthralled throughout. A definite must for History buffs as it is partly factual and nearly always realistic in terms of historical content.
Many of Lampitt's novels stem from this trilogy with minor charactors and their descendants becoming the stars of the show. They are a delight to read, and piece together- like a large puzzle. Therefore, if you find that you have enjoyed the trilogy, there is the added bonus that you can prolong the magic by reading her other books.

In the book, Sidonie Brooks, a divorced, modern-day female musician specializing in harpsichords and other older instruments, moves into a flat on the street that backs up to where Holland House once was.
She acquires a harpsichord - a gift from George III to Sarah - without knowing any of the history of it! or them, until she falls through a time fault. These journeys take four hours of today's time, but show her only minutes of the then time, and the trips move the past forward in an non-proportionate way. The first is when Sarah is barely fourteen, and they end when she is an elderly lady, whereas the contemporary story occupies only a bit more than a year of today's time. These trips may happen anytime and anywhere - providing Sarah was, at least once in her own lifetime, in the same place the musician is, in today's world.
The two stories are set against each other; Sarah and her loves in the mid 1700s, and Sidonie battling her pompous ex-husband while enjoying her burgeoning career and the travels it brings, plus the new men in her life.
I found this to be a totally engrossing story, one not easily forgotten.
