Lamarque is a decent writer, a decent philosopher, probably a decent citizen. His book on philosophy of literature is interesting to some degree; if nothing else, he does manage to address most of the interesting issues. But his personal style, or lack thereof, doesn't do anything to keep people from dozing off. A fine book for those suffering from a caffeine high.

A useful collection, but buyers should know that it is an unaltered reprint of a 1983 work, issued with a new preface by Professor Lamarque. For a more recent and extended statement of the editor's own ideas see his 1996 "Fictional Points of View".
